Keir Starmer comment

In his speech, Keir Starmer said "Labour are the party of working people". I understand the sentiment, but could be alienating for those who are willing but unable to work.

I think it's meant to be taken very literally, that Labour is the party of the labouring classes.

The element that is annoying is that in fact they clearly despise those people, and they are really the party of the urban university educated technocrat classes.

It's in the name. Labour.

It's bollocks anyway. Labour aren't the party of the working people or the poor.

They're an absolute shambles and Starmer is a disgrace. So is my TU who have chosen to continue to back them.

@Chosennone

I don't know any working class people who vote Labour anymore. He doesn't speak for working people. He speaks for middle class champagne socialists and men.
Yes. I agree
Nidan2Sandan · 29/09/2021 18:11

I think traditionally they tout themselves as the party of the working people as they supported the mine workers etc but these days they are miles away from that.

I'm no Starmer fan, he's an absolute snake (I'd rather have Boris tbh) but I think you're being a bit over the top about that comment.

I agree. Overall he did a good job, but it's always hard to hear when you are someone really struggling to be in or stay in work due to health issues. I desperately want to work hard but my body says otherwise. But I agree he can't talk about everything and what we need is clear messages to win elections not faff.

@girlmom21

Yesterday they were discussing a £15 minimum wage. They're not a party for the working people. That wouldn't benefit anyone. It would put thousands of people out of work and would increase the cost of living massively.
There is a school of thought (which I subscribe to) that if as a business you can’t afford to pay your workers a decent wage that they can live on, then should you be in business at all?

Agree, I am very working class, labour was just who you voted for but I can't see myself voting Labour for awhile yet. They are not the party for 'the working people' anymore, the tories certainly aren't either. However I think both parties have moved away from their roots and they meet a lot closer on the lift/right spectrum these days.

DP and I are both from towns which switched from Red to Blue. We know people who would never have considered voting Tory in their life who did at the election. We saw this coming a million miles away. These places have been ignored for generations. The elite can’t grasp the rather simple concept of the protest vote.
