I was on the edge of a rain storm today. Literally being rained on one side of the street but not the other. Loved it - felt v cool and like I was inside a scientific experiment. Any others?

Yes have had rain out the front and not out the back, cool.

Been on a beach with a lightning strike perhaps 50 feet away (so quite close) SCARY.

PhoboPhobia · 28/09/2021 13:22

Not interesting as such but my only time experiencing sub zero temperature was an eye opener.

DH and I went to Hamburg in January a few years back. Went well equipped for the cold but nothing quite prepares you for it. It was between -7 and -12 over the 5 days we were there.

In Boston a few years ago. I said to dh it was forecast to rain so let’s get back to our hotel. The clouds were gray but it wasn’t actually raining at all yet …… Until it was. It literally was like someone pouring a bath full of water over us. We went from dry to completely drenched in a millisecond. I’ve never experienced rain quite like that, no build up at all, just instantly torrential.

insancerre · 28/09/2021 13:32

In Menorca we experienced a storm that lasted all day with torrential rain and spectacular lightning
We dodged the rain to eat out. The rain flooded the restaurant and knocked out the power. The staff calmly picked up our table and food and moved us further inside where they lit candles and we carried on with our meal

A few weeks ago I was driving along a motorway and could see a dark cloud in front with blue sky beyond.
When I got to it there was a patch of cloud with really heavy rain stretching the whole way across the motorway. But it was only about 10ft deep, so by the time I drove under it I was almost out the other side. Completely dry the other side. Never seen anything like it.

In the Canaries, lying on the beach in the sun and watching it rain about 50 feet away.
In Queensland Australia, the sky turned green and then golf ball sized hail came down. Also experiencing the tail end of a cyclone.

Saisong · 28/09/2021 13:38

We were on a beach in Corsica once, all calm and warm and sunny. Suddenly a mini tornado rushed out of the hills behind, passed a few hundred yards away and swirled down the beach, scattering people and whirling away their possessions. Several beach umbrellas and a couple of lilos went at least 50ft up in the air and ended up in the sea. It then vanished as quickly as it appeared!

Tropical storm in the Dominican Republic - just a total walk of rain and SO loud. Lightning & thunder cracks almost simultaneous.

In Blackpool - watched a storm 'walk in' from the sea as it drifted inland. We could see the rain falling but on our side it was dry & sunny. About half an hour it hit land.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/09/2021 13:45

Holiday in North of Scotland one NY was something like -24 at its coldest point. Things stopped working, and gas heaters saved the day.
A tropical storm in the Seychelles was awesome too - hot torrential rain that stopped as quickly as it started.

I've been in a sandstorm in Australia and I also spent a week cleaning after it 🤣🤣 so glad we don't get weather like that here.

MadameOvary81 · 28/09/2021 13:50

We were on the QM2 during Hurricane Andrew. We had to leave the dock in NYC early and it "chased" us all along the North Atlantic. It destroyed Red Hook moments after we left. It was odd sitting in the bar watching the TV showing news of the Jersey coast being pulverised as we sailed past it. Scary!

Monsoon season in Sri Lanka. Absolutely amazing. Boiling hot weather, sudden downpour with HUGE lightning storm, all switched off like an electric shower after an hour. Like clockwork every day.

Hurricane Irma in Antigua.... We were out there for that one. The lead up 24hrs had ominous red skies, warm winds, the sea changed colour as the colder water was forced ahead of the storm with lots of mud and sand mixed up.

SirenSays · 28/09/2021 13:54

We had a pool party on my friends rooftop in Australia. Gorgeously sunny all day then at about six the entire sky turned this amazing deep purple and we got to watch four different massive thunderstorms kicking off around the city.

Passthecake30 · 28/09/2021 13:56

Standstorm in lanzarote, in the middle of a deserted beach. Kids were a few metres off digging a hole when it started. Dd (about 8) was sensible and dived on my lap for my back to take the brunt of it, and her to be protected. Dp and I cling onto your sun shade and hunkered down, protecting our eyes. All we saw of Ds (about 10) was a bright green blur running around in circles around us…boy did it sting!

purplesequins · 28/09/2021 13:57

a temperature drop from 20 degrees to -20 degrees in the us.
started with rain, ended with snow and insanely slippery roads.

SecretWitch · 28/09/2021 14:01

I was woken by my friend who said we must go to the basement immediately. We scooped up her cats and ran downstairs. It was quiet and then horrendous noise, my ears kept popping. It was over very quickly. The tornado skirted her house but went down the street and hit several other homes. The damage was awful. Tornados are dreadfully frightening.

ThatSunnyCorner · 28/09/2021 14:03

I've been in -35° with the Aurora Borealis dancing around the sky. No other experience will ever come close.

crispinglovershighkick · 28/09/2021 14:15

I wasn't there for the weather but the aftermath. My mum lives on an island and was evacuated due to a severe storm. They lost all utilities for months and it was weeks before she could return for a few hours to collect some of her belongings. She had had five feet of flooding in the house, everything that had had contact with flood water had to be disposed of and the house was razed and rebuilt. A neighbour came home to find his whole house and all his possessions had been swept into the sea, completely gone.

I was visiting once when a storm drew in and the wind swept heavy furniture sideways off the porch. The storm looked like a huge dark green donut, the sky and light went green, you could see lightning in the clouds. There was a lull and it got light briefly when the eye passed over, then we got the other side of it. I can't remember if it rained but the wind was terrifying.

The day of my wedding it became severely windy on the way back to our hotel and we found out later that a tornado had touched down a couple of miles away.

APurpleSquirrel · 28/09/2021 14:19

We got hit pretty bad by the Beast from the East on Feb 2018 - but this was awesome- rain frozen on to the glass.

Rain/lightening storm in Florida. Never seen rain like it. We were in one of the parks and suddenly the sky went black and the rain just bucketed down. They shut the rides and we had to walk back to the coach, the park ‘streets’ flooded and in minutes the water was ankle deep. The lightening was non stop fork lightening. Bit scary really but amazing to see.

Underamour · 28/09/2021 14:19

Russia in winter is exactly as cold as you would think it would be. Vodka is actually needed for medicinal reasons

DinosApple · 28/09/2021 14:19

A torrential, sudden rain storm and gusty wind in Shropshire.

We had just arrived at a pub with the (little) DC and taken our drinks outside to the beer garden. Must have been sat down 5 minutes when out of nowhere came a terrific squall of huge winds. All the umbrellas in the tables flew up and away apart from ours which DH held onto. I went into every man for themselves mode and dragged DD1 straight into the bar. Then the heavens opened. It was spectacular, never seen anything like it. At that point DH decided to make a run for it with DC2. They came 10 yards and were soaked to the skin.
A couple of minutes later it was bright and sunny, very, very random.

Sandy was the storm that wrecked my mum's house.
