Shit, I’ve got to go to a football match!

And I really don’t want to go.

Never been to one in all my 50 years. Can anyone tell me what it’s like, do you have to queue for ages to get in and out?

Should I strip and try to run across the field to relieve the boredom?Grin

Definitely streak naked across the pitch 😂
I’ve been to a couple of games with my DP, it was my least favourite tbh of live sports to watch, much preferred rugby.
I don’t remember queuing for a long time 🤔

IncyWincyGrownUp · 28/09/2021 11:30

I had to go to one once. My then-partner got tickets to some premiership match or another in a work raffle. I told him to take a friend, somebody who would appreciate it, an internet random, or even a bloody teddy. No. I had to go.

I sat on the front row and read my book until it was home time.

I’ll never get that two hours of my life back, but at least I had a book.

CorrBlimeyGG · 28/09/2021 11:30

It depends on who you're going to see. I watch a lower division side and there's no queues.

Wear layers, take a flask rather than queuing for a drink. Stretch your legs at half time.

And make sure you know which colour your team is playing in!

vickibee · 28/09/2021 11:32

I love going to footie, i guess it depends who u r going to see, is it a high profile team or a lower league one.
I have a season ticket and rarely have to queue for more than a few minutes. Championship side. Its worse leaving TBH as everyone goes at once so it is a bit of a bottleneck
Definitely do the streaking very entertaining for the rest of us lol

Sally872 · 28/09/2021 11:33

Not much queuing unless you are getting snacks at half time but I wouldn't bother, might be a big walk upstairs to get to seat. Wrap up warm. If it is a busy game then seats are quite tightly packed so avoid a big hand bag if you can (some don't allow them) I had small purse and phone in my pocket.

I took my dd recently and we really enjoyed it, but I do support that team, I struggle to watch if I don't care who wins.

BumfuzzledMum · 28/09/2021 11:39

It’s Newcastle v Tottenham so will be quite busy I should imagine.

It was supposed to be a surprise for DH who is a rabid Newcastle fan but has never watched them at their home ground before.

I registered in his name but couldn’t book the tickets for some reason. I was trying to do it fast as worried they would sell out so quickly registered myself and managed to get them but in my frigging name!

I see now they are not transferable and they check photo ID in the ticket name. It was supposed to be DH and DS going. Now it’s got to me DH and I.

6 hour trip there and back too!

I used to really enjoy going to football matches. Wrap up - it's colder than you'd expect!

NigelSlatersXmasTaters · 28/09/2021 11:42

Wrap up warm, eat pies 🥧

dementedma · 28/09/2021 11:43

Boring, cold, crowded. Take a book

Don't wear layers if you're planing on streaking . . . . . far too much hassle.

DoncasterHombre · 28/09/2021 11:47

Sorry @vickibee - I didn't mean to quote you.

DuncinToffee · 28/09/2021 11:48

Phone or email the fan services and explain the mix up with names and see if they can change it for you.
I don't know Newcastle but know other clubs would do this without problems.

ThatSunnyCorner · 28/09/2021 12:21

Well you might love it. I'm into the thousands of games attended now, and for me there's nothing like it. Not been to St James Park but have been in Newcastle when they are playing. The noise is incredible, definitely one of the better grounds for atmosphere.

There will be queueing, but football queues move fast. And I find sitting much colder than standing, so wear plenty of warm layers

Definitely do this if it it gets you out of a 6 hour drive each way and 2 hours sat in a cold stadium watching a sport you don't like. I can't imagine them even checking ID tbh.
Orangejuicemarathoner · 28/09/2021 14:00

just contact them and explain the mistake

RunningFromInsanity · 28/09/2021 14:22

In the many many years I’ve been to football matches (premier league and lower leagues) I have never once had the name and ID checked.

I went to Stanford bridge on Saturday, all I did was scan my ticket at the machine and enter the turnstile.
No checks at all.

IamaBluebird · 28/09/2021 15:58

You’re lucky you’re going in the home end. If you were going as an away supporter I’d advise binoculars and oxygen. I was giddy by the time I climbed all the steps to my seat Smile

loopylou42 · 28/09/2021 16:03

We had something similar with a concert a few years back.

Friend DH has booked the tickets which we're non transferable in his name as a birthday gift for her but had no intention of going....he had to escort us both to the ticket check point they checked the tickets and his ID and was free to go. There were lots of parents escorting they're teens to the gig too and doing the same.

They only check id so that people don't sell the tickets on for profit

lawofdistraction · 28/09/2021 16:09

Have you actually contacted them and explained the situation? Things like these are non transferable to avoid touts, not spouses making a mistake

mollibu · 28/09/2021 16:12

Op, ring them and see if they can go by taking your bank card and ID? I've done this before for concert tickets at Wembley.

DobieGrayshark · 28/09/2021 16:22

I’ve never shown ID for any football match ever including Premiership teams. Lots of friends have shared season tickets so different adults and kids use them each week with no problem. Football matches are fun anyway though so maybe just go along and try to enjoy it.

LeSquigh · 28/09/2021 16:47

Going to football is MUCH more exciting than watching it on TV. The atmosphere can be amazing. They never check ID. Even when they make a point of telling you to bring it they never check it, I went to the Euros in the summer and they didn’t even bother then despite all the publicity surrounding it. And yes, you will be cold, it’s always cold for some reason!

RusholmeRuffian · 28/09/2021 18:12

In 40 years of going to football and having visited almost every league ground, I have never once been asked for ID. Don't go if you don't want to. Call the ticket office if you want to double check but I reckon it'll be fine.

Libertaire · 28/09/2021 18:23

Lucky you! The atmosphere at St James’s Park is usually fantastic & the Geordies are a friendly bunch, so you should have an enjoyable time. You probably won’t have to queue to get in or, because you’re female, for the loos. You will have to queue for the bars & food outlets.

Dress for weather at least 10 degrees colder than you think it will be - football stadiums are cold! Conversely, if it’s sunny take your shades. If the sun is in your eyes you won’t see anything otherwise.

Don’t worry about your safety. Fans do shout obscenities at their rivals, but it’s banter and trouble is very rare. Enjoy!

suckingonchillidogs · 28/09/2021 18:31

It'll be great - some of the chants are hilarious and if the match is a bit dull it's brilliant for people watching.
