Summer has just finished. Just felt it go as the weather front slips in from the West. Who else is in tune with the weather?

I knew it was coming today. I have been following the weather patterns for years, but it still took me by surprise. I saw the banks of thin white clouds just as the weather radar had told us.

Today is the last day of 20+ degree temperature in the U.K. for six months. It won’t come back now. It is going to drop a good 9 degrees starting overnight. The seasonal storms in Africa that spiral out across the mid-Atlantic are stronger, more frequent, so that by the time those hurricanes come round the east coast of Canada and under Iceland they will gather moisture and dump colder, wetter weather on the U.K. from now.

It has not been a particularly good summer. A long, cool, dry Spring. It gets darker now, earlier. I don’t mind the seasons. It’s just that this Summer has been poor weather for many things here.

I felt it last night. The air was different. I used to feel this a lot as a child when I was outside a lot, lost it during the office working years what with not seeing the outside and air con, and since having kids and being sahm I felt it come back.

We stepped out in to the night after going to a restaurant and I instantly felt it. The light is more yellow and low.

We've had a glorious summer here in the east of Scotland. Absolutely scorching Couplemof weeks in July, I don't remember the last time we had a day that didn't hit at least 20c in the afternoon and apart from a couple of storms we've had next to no rain. Still incredibly mild and sunny atm and no hint of what's to come next week. It's been worker the last few days - common due to the equinox I believe

Hawkmoth · 26/09/2021 16:57

Can we be friends?

Pallyum · 26/09/2021 16:58

I’m not as knowledgeable as you evidently are re weather patterns, but I too have felt the seasons turn in the last couple of days. It really unsettles me.

lemonyfox · 26/09/2021 17:01

Thank god, I love colder weather!

userxx · 26/09/2021 17:02

I've noticed it getting darker earlier for the past 3 years. I hate the feeling of summer being over and the colder weather is on the way. Maybe I need to move to a warmer climate.

BlueRaincoat1 · 26/09/2021 17:03

You have a lovely way of writing OP. I've no idea if what you've said makes any sense, but it reads like the start if a book.

Whattherapy2020 · 26/09/2021 17:04

Where/What would you recommend i start with if I wanted to learn about weather patterns?
I find this stuff so interesting - and I need to learn a new skill before the end of the year. I can't have another year of not meeting any of my new year resolutions Grin

EssentiallyDisorganised · 26/09/2021 17:07

It's been a lovely September, reminds me why it's one of my favourite months. No chance of it getting too hot but still warm enough for short sleeves, sandals, no coats or jumpers and no heating on. Time for autumn proper to start now though.

HereForThis · 26/09/2021 17:09

Err...okay.

On another note, you should write a book. I bet you can write about curtains, for example, and it would still sound interesting even if it doesn't make sense.

Zeal · 26/09/2021 17:09

@Iampicklerick
You engaged many senses last night. I hope your family enjoy the changeover and appreciate the little things.

@liveforsummer
East coast of Scotland is one of the world's best kept secrets. It is comparatively dry for a reason. The light is amazing though, dawn and dusk.

@Hawkmoth
It feels as if we will.

@Pallyum
At 07:23 last Wednesday the Earth's tilt at the Poles was 90 degrees - it neither tilted away nor towards. Now the North Pole is gradually tilting away from the Sun at the rate of about 2 minutes a day. Just a few days before Christmas it will stop and start to tilt back towards the Sun. That is only 90 days. There is much to infill in each day of course to make them longer.

@BlueRaincoat1 I agree. I really enjoyed reading that OP and could have quite settled it for that to be a novel. On this lovely autumnal afternoon. Write more Op!

Strictlynonchancing · 26/09/2021 17:11

I was hoping for a last minute blast of good weather, we’ve a week in Falmouth booked for Oct 9th 😞 won’t be much fun in the cold.

dementedma · 26/09/2021 17:11

Have to agree about East of Scotland. Been a fabulous summer, best I can remember. Was out walking today still wearing shorts which I have lived in for months. Legs are lovely and brown. Not sure its completely over yet...

CatchingStars · 26/09/2021 17:13

Absolutely - today has been a garden tidy up day and I'm now sitting with a chilled glass making the most of the day - I'm looking forward to autumn, and winter but I do feel sad that summer goes today

Bimblybomeyelash · 26/09/2021 17:17

It has been a lovely day today. Late summer is my favourite time of year. I was hoping for a blue skied autumn, as I love a walk across the hilltops when all the trees below are turning.

liveforsummer · 26/09/2021 17:21

@Zeal dry here yes, but not normally warm. This has been unusual/unprecedented to have consistently warm weather for such a long time. I'm 42 and didn't remember it being like this before. Still forecast to be well in to double figures through the night tonight on my local forecast but not warming up much from that as day dawns so I do feel you are right in saying that's it, it's just clinging on a fraction longer here so not shown us yet. It's going to sneak in after dark

Zeal · 26/09/2021 17:21

It's the way Summer met Autumn head on that grabs me. Some years the Seasons just slip their various parts into each other. Mostly, it has been unnoticeably calm this year, especially the last three weeks. You can't notice something that isn't there and so the 'wind that did not exist' has not been missed. The dryness caused the leaves to turn and drop, I noticed that. You can miss rain. Not sure you can miss wind.

Not sure what you're talking about, but where I am, you have cold days, warm days and wet rainy days.
Last few days have been warm. And today is also warm and sunny. Could be any day from Spring/ Summer or Autumn.

CornishTiger · 26/09/2021 17:24

You need to move this to the weather board and mean @ohyoubadbadkitten

FrenchBoule · 26/09/2021 17:24

Summer in Scotland was amazing this year. A bit dry but at least warm 🙂

CornishTiger · 26/09/2021 17:24

*meet

dworky · 26/09/2021 17:28

Still warm & sunny in London but last nice day according to forecast.

Bbq1 · 26/09/2021 17:32

I love following the weather. Here in the Northwest we've had a beautiful long and hot summer. It's still warm today and yes, temperatures are set to plummet overnight. I like the sun but don't cope well in the heat so I am glad that Autumn is finally arriving, looking forward to cosy nights to come.

Zeal · 26/09/2021 17:33

@Strictlynonchancing
The sea on the South Coast is at its warmest in October. You will have a blast. You can also drive round the coast to West Cornwall and it is not too far to the most amazing coves. Porthcurno in October is beautiful. You need to get your skin in the water though.
