Summer has just finished. Just felt it go as the weather front slips in from the West. Who else is in tune with the weather?

I knew it was coming today. I have been following the weather patterns for years, but it still took me by surprise. I saw the banks of thin white clouds just as the weather radar had told us.

Today is the last day of 20+ degree temperature in the U.K. for six months. It won’t come back now. It is going to drop a good 9 degrees starting overnight. The seasonal storms in Africa that spiral out across the mid-Atlantic are stronger, more frequent, so that by the time those hurricanes come round the east coast of Canada and under Iceland they will gather moisture and dump colder, wetter weather on the U.K. from now.

It has not been a particularly good summer. A long, cool, dry Spring. It gets darker now, earlier. I don’t mind the seasons. It’s just that this Summer has been poor weather for many things here.

Fog with us on South coast this morning.
Have you watched the harvest moon that is now waning? These 'super moons' have been good.

Mysa74 · 26/09/2021 17:44

I have horses, I'm far too aware of the quarter days... I love February to may, June but hate August as that's when I really notice everything start to change. October or October type weather (grey, dark and damp) is the pits.

Zeal · 26/09/2021 17:55

@Mysa74 For me the worst is mid-November to mid-December. There is nothing that is not grey, dark and damp. Dirty water exists everywhere from between slabs in pavements to depressions in the car park. And there is a 100% probability our shoes, boots or clothes get spattered.

I would be amazed if ancient tribes did not have a festive season already then, and before Christ was born, simply to lift their spirits. I wager whisky, beer and wine were deliberately invented for those weeks. But once we tip over into January, the increased light is noticeable. January is better with ice. It complements the light and the skeins of geese flying north.

I'm thrilled to be honest. What a useless summer, the warmest days here were also the muggiest and this limping warmth has just made it so hard to dress appropriately.

I'm looking forward to boots and scarves, but not the endless dark nights and afternoons.

@BlueRaincoat1

You have a lovely way of writing OP. I've no idea if what you've said makes any sense, but it reads like the start if a book.
I agree.

This is a Sunday night post if ever there was one.

You make me feel very relaxed @Zeal

I can't wait for this season. I adore the cold.

Zeal · 26/09/2021 18:09

And as if by magic, the sharp edge of Autumn arrived 4 minutes ago. A little green harvester first with it orange lights flashing drove up the road, dust everywhere. Wagons behind, like some Wild West era, but this precious isn’t metal. It’s for electric generation. By midnight, these fields will be stripped.

I wasn’t expecting this. Well, I was but not in the same breath of this evening.

I really felt it yesterday, too! Made me feel like hibernating. I am a bit under the weather but felt like I needed to stay home in the warm.

Thank god, I love colder weather!
I don't

I have felt this today, it has been a glorious day in South Yorkshire and as the evening draws in, a switch has been flipped and that is it for any sort of warmth from the sun until April. We are all doomed I feel to have a shitty autumn and winter with covid, brexit, weather etc etc

shouldistop · 26/09/2021 18:16

I love the change of the seasons. And it's slightly different all over the uk. In Scotland, we get our autumn earlier than most of England. I suppose that's why the school summer holidays are earlier up here.

LostpencilSOS · 26/09/2021 18:21

I have felt the sunshine changing colour last week here in manchester. It's more golden and richer but with a slight crispiness in the air that is increasing each day.

I absolutely ADORE autumn. I decorate my house for this season and love everything about it ❤️🍁🍂

Yes it has. I have done loads of gardening today.
Northernsoullover · 26/09/2021 18:32

I hate winter as a rule but did find some things nice. Heating on and lamps on mainly. This year I'm worried about the cost of heating so this warm weather has been a blessing.

This gold is going. Tomorrow at dawn it will be Autumn.

One of my favourite things ever are the days on which you catch the change of season.
The air smells/feels different is the only way I can articulate it but I know what I mean!🥴😁
As much as I love the warm lazy days of summer and the real treat of a almost Indian Summer when September is warm and dry like this past month, nothing is more exciting than the crackle in the air that signifies the nights drawing in and Autumn arriving.
It's my favourite season.
I also love rain, really enjoy it as much as a blue sky sunny day so looking forward to this week!

OP I find your writing very moving and sad!

I feel full of nostalgia and longing for our lost summer and hope it comes again soon.

Zeal · 26/09/2021 18:42

If you still want heat, calm and balmy days then two weeks in Bordeaux should do it, to lay the summer ghosts to rest.

Bumpsadaisie · 26/09/2021 18:43

We have loads of acer trees in the wood behind us. In two weeks they will be looking glorious.

traumatisednoodle · 26/09/2021 18:44

I don't notice the evenings. But will be getting out of bed in the dark and cold for the next 6 months (5:30am in the week).
