Baking Present for 10 year old

DD will be 10 next month. She plays a lot of sport, but also enjoys baking, which I want to build on as the winter sets in, and the cricket season has finished (age dues also okey football though). I’m not a bad baker/cook myself for family food. I won’t be winning any prizes though!!

I want to get DD a baking related present, but she’s too big/old for typical “kids baking kits” of scaled down rolling pins etc. She is competent with all our standard sized stuff. She has a couple of kids cook books and can follow recipes from the bbc good food website.

I’ve been looking at baking subscription boxes, but they all seem to be cakes/buns etc and I’d really like to increase her savoury repertoire, and she is fine about weighing out ingredients etc anyway.

Would an apron with her name on be a bit young for 10? Any other ideas?

No

I bought my DD, a few years ago now, spatulas and wooden spoons with her name on. Got them from Not On The High Street.
Maybe something like a pancake or waffle maker?

We did this a couple of years ago. I included some of those ready loaf tin liners & round cake tin liners as she always struggled with cutting the baking parchment herself, some fancier than usual cup cake cases, a load of the Wilton colours and then various sprinkles, chocolate chips, dried raspberries and things like that. It basically meant she had a wider range of ingredients in the cupboard when she fancied doing some baking on a whim and could do some different decorations

I'd get a Danish Bread whisk. A random gift for a 10 year old but it's hands down the best kitchen implement I've ever owned. You can use it for cake mix, pancake batter, cream etc as well as bread dough (the bread whisk is quicker than my freestanding mixer for bread dough). The mixing is super quick and easy, much easier than a spoon so that might encourage her to bake more.

My SIL got me a wooden spoon with Star Baker on it one year, I was really chuffed

How about Delia's complete cookery course book? It has everything from starters to desserts, it's an old but good one...

Gardenlass · 25/09/2021 10:05

A pasta machine so that she can make her own tagliatelle, etc?

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/09/2021 10:06

We got ours a box full of decorating bits last year

We also got our elder DD (then 9) a blank recipe book to put all her favourite recipes in.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 25/09/2021 10:07

My 10 year old loves her apron with her name on it! We also got her a set of utensils (red polka dots) scales, a mixer, and a set of mixing bowls. Some food dyes, pretty muffin cases and nice decorating stuff, like icing bag and different shaped nozzles.

It all goes in her own baking cupboard and she loves it.

Cookie cutters, piping bag set, icing pens, food colouring set

Stompythedinosaur · 25/09/2021 10:09

I've just bought a mug cakes recipe book for my 10yo for xmas which I think she'll enjoy.

It the last year she has really enjoyed a fondant rolling pin and a set of fondant cutters for sugarcraft.

She has a harry potter apron which she likes.

Holland and Barrett do a very cool one, I’ll see if I can find a link

BeyondMyWits · 25/09/2021 10:13

My daughter's favourite present last year was an oxo icing sugar dusting wand. It was "the present" of Christmas for her ... that present that gets remembered.

Ah doesn’t look like they do it anymore. Lakeland usually sell more unusual things.

Laufeythejust · 25/09/2021 10:21

I had a baked in subscription for a while and found that quite good, there was a lot of cakes but it did occasionally have some bread type stuff on there too like pretzels.
Does she have all the stuff she needs? I got bought an electric hand mixer, it was only cheap but one of the best things I had. I was very sad when it died 10 years later!

ineedacupoftea · 25/09/2021 10:21

I bought my 10 year old a Bakedin bread subscription for her birthday last year (normal adult version, not a kids’ one), that went down well.

ineedacupoftea · 25/09/2021 10:23

Or how about just a nice savoury/ bread cookbook and things like tins/unusual ingredients to go in a hamper?

HelloDoris · 25/09/2021 10:26

I bought a 10 year old a cake decorating kit, turntable, piping nozzles etc..

If she's into fancy cake decorating as well as baking, how about one of Kim Joy's books? She was on Bake Off a few years ago and makes a lot of stuff with cute looking animals etc, kind of ainme style.

BikeRunSki · 25/09/2021 10:31

Oh wow!! Thank you all for great ideas. I love the Star Baker spoon! Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. This will be the funest present to buy since the dolls house when she was 3!

Bakedin subscription is brilliant, my DC had the normal one not the kids one and managed fine. They do a bread based one now too I think.

mumofpickles · 25/09/2021 10:52

What about a cookery day you can do together? The Ann smart school of cookery is on Groupon at the moment and I got one for my birthday and really en joyed it or some colleges with a catering department sometimes offer them

20DigitCombination · 25/09/2021 10:57

I'd go for a stand mixer or bread maker. Those are the 2 pieces of baking equipment I use the most.

There’s a local cafe that does them. I’m keeping me eyes out for the next one.

We have a stand mixer. No room for a bread maker, but I love making bread by hand.
