Baking Present for 10 year old

DD will be 10 next month. She plays a lot of sport, but also enjoys baking, which I want to build on as the winter sets in, and the cricket season has finished (age dues also okey football though). I’m not a bad baker/cook myself for family food. I won’t be winning any prizes though!!

I want to get DD a baking related present, but she’s too big/old for typical “kids baking kits” of scaled down rolling pins etc. She is competent with all our standard sized stuff. She has a couple of kids cook books and can follow recipes from the bbc good food website.

I’ve been looking at baking subscription boxes, but they all seem to be cakes/buns etc and I’d really like to increase her savoury repertoire, and she is fine about weighing out ingredients etc anyway.

Would an apron with her name on be a bit young for 10? Any other ideas?

Have a look at Lakeland for some ideas.

However, id get a star baker apron (proceeds to cancer research)

And a rolling pin which leaves patterns on the pastry (I'm having a moment and can't remember the proper way to describe them). You can get them saying things like homemade with love, or they have flowers on them etc.

Embossed.

They are called embossed rolling pins.

I'm an avid baker and oif I was to ask for the perfect present it would be a bouquet of flour. Not your normal strong white but some of the more fancy types that they have in Waitrose. A malt, a spelt, seeded, ancient grain blend ,00 etc. Then I would have a great time finding bread recipes to fit the ingredients.

Pizza is an excellent recipe for her to work on for a savoury dish. I use flour, oil, yeast and water and that's it. My sauce is passata , Tom paste, salt, sugar and basil and oregano. Then whatever toppings you fancy. I also use the dough to make cheese stuffed garlic dough balls. We do pizza once a week and it's delicious and a firm family favourite.

I think the idea of a baking course is lovely. If you're in or near London Biscuiteers do an icing decorating course.

Plus a subscription to a baking magazine? They often come with a new bit of kit each week too

Oh, I just remembered, I got DH a baking blowtorch one year. He hasn't used it very much outside mini meringue pies but who doesn't like playing with fire? (With heavy parental supervision) Grin

Nowhere near London, but sounds sounds amazing!!

We had a little cooks subscription , it was much too old for my DS, he can't read. I'd say fine for 10 year old. I think was usual sweet stuff but sent spices and savoury recipes each month too. Look at the actual kits and recipes, I'd say the website graphics are younger than the kits are really for. Your Dc will be able to read it herself.

It's quite healthy stuff btw

labazslovesliving · 25/09/2021 16:27

if you want some savoury items you can get the bread mixes in various flavours to make. most just want water added to them. I am sure she would love to do them plus buy some nice bits and pieces like jars of sun-dried tomatoes etc

BlackInk · 25/09/2021 17:52

Not on the Highstreet has some nice and different baking kits. My 9 y/o daughter was given a rainbow bagel making kit, and a personalised apron both from NOTH.

Princessorange · 25/09/2021 17:57

You could a recipe book that you can put your own recipes in together ❤️

I'd second a browse on the lakeland website - they have some fun things like embossed rolling pins, a set of equipment to make roses from fondant, a set of star cookie cutters - to build a biscuit christmas tree. They also have some good kits - eg a cake mix to make a rainbow layer cake and a gingerbread campervan kit.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/09/2021 18:13

Proper set of measuring cups

@BeyondMyWits oh yes awesome idea for my baking mad god daughter thank you!

SuperStarRose · 26/09/2021 13:35

When my DD that age was into baking in a big way I bought her a set of cutouts and tools to help with decorating the cake which she absolutely loved.

Chimchimcharoo · 26/09/2021 14:26

My daughter loves baking but she also loves presenting her bakes as afternoon tea - so a cake stand? Pretty cases for cakes.

PlanDeRaccordement · 26/09/2021 14:30

Maybe a bread machine? They are easy to use, safe for baking and once she gets the hang of it, she can make up own recipes for different breads. They also make good dough which she can then take out to hand bake bread or make pizza crust, etc.

BurningBenches · 26/09/2021 14:33

Another bakedin fan here. We bought for our 10yo last Christmas and shes really enjoyed receiving the box each month.

sueelleker · 26/09/2021 16:21

@StarryStarrySocks

If she's into fancy cake decorating as well as baking, how about one of Kim Joy's books? She was on Bake Off a few years ago and makes a lot of stuff with cute looking animals etc, kind of ainme style.
Kim's stuff on Bake Off was amazing.

Lakeland do a compact one that makes 1lb loaves.

My mum bought my 10 year old a personalized apron and baker's hat. Also does yours watch Great British Bake Off? Mine loves the GBBO books, treats them as bedtime reading, but also likes to try out the recipes. We got ours signed at various events, if you look on eBay or similar you might find signed ones for sale.

Ellmau · 26/09/2021 17:25

A more advanced cookbook perhaps?
