Silly q about kittens

Where do you let them sleep?
Do you have to contain them somewhere? Do they sleep at night?

Will they sleep in their own little cat bed or in a cat bed in the dc rooms?

I'd be scared about dc crushing them or.. The cat suffocating dc in sleep..

Can kittens even climb stairs we have painted ones

Soubriquet · 20/09/2021 15:11

Yes they can climb stairs. They are determined little fuckers and can get where they want

You can confine them to a pen for sleeping but really most just curl up somewhere cozy and safe and snooze away

Autumngoldleaf · 20/09/2021 15:12

Thanks, is birmin a good breed? I've read good stuff but mumsnet on bengal totally put me off!

What are you looking for in a cat?

Kerantli · 20/09/2021 15:13

Our kitten sleeps between us at night. If we move and disturb her she just moves to another position.

And having had cats since I was very young, I've never had a cat sufforcate me or either of my kids

ScottishNewbie · 20/09/2021 15:15

We kept ours downstairs at night until 6 months old. They had their litter tray, food, water, and a cat tree that they slept on together.
After that they have had free reign and often jump up for a quick pat, before going off to explore.
I would 100% get two.

They are so well behaved because they play with each other rather than trying to play with your furniture or your feet.
They probably wouldn't sleep in a cat bed on the floor. I would get a cat tree with a bed on it for them.
My two boys are best friends at a year old!

Do you have painted stairs or kittens op?

They normally like to sleep with you - well my lot do and did from a kitten. They love with you - they're good at that when yuu turn over at night!

Of our 4, 1 sleeps with us, another in our room but not in the bed and the remaining 2 on DS' bed.

DressBitch · 20/09/2021 15:21

When we first got our cat, she went in the spare room overnight while she got used to us (and the dog). I wanted her to have her own space to feel safe.

Almost a year on, if she decides to grace us with her presence at night, she sleeps on our bed (with the dog!).

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 20/09/2021 15:23

This is my ball of fluff she has a bed but sleeps anywhere she fancies. Not in bedrooms as no animals are allowed in bedrooms but she makes herself v comfy

When we brought ours home she had a fluffy bed that she wouldn’t go near. We got one of the enclosed ones, she probably spent about 3 hours in total in it - she just sleeps on the floor (carpet) or sofas! She’s 6 months and and we still keep the door shut to keep her downstairs as she likes to lay at the top of the stairs. The only reason for that is because she is grey, as is the carpet! So we worry about tripping over her or hurting her in the night. As it gets colder I’ll probably let her up as it’s warmer upstairs in the winter.

dementedpixie · 20/09/2021 15:23

Mine sleep in boxes, on the floor, on dining room chairs, etc. They don't tend to sleep on our beds at night although they can be found there sometimes during the day

Crunchymum · 20/09/2021 15:26

Yep mine never set foot near his fluffy, cosy cat bed.

Slept with me the first night and ever since. Although kittens don't like to sleep when we do Grin

DowntonCrabby · 20/09/2021 15:35

We let our older girl sleep where she likes how that she and DC are all older. We have a 1 year old DCat too that is still shut in the living room overnight with food/ litter tray/ multiple places to sleep. I wouldn’t let a young kitten into bedrooms at all and wouldn’t let any cat wander around the whole house/choose where to sleep with DC under 5.

Soubriquet · 20/09/2021 15:46

Mine slept in her bed when she was a baby. Now as an adult she sleeps wherever she wants

My kitten sleeps with us, between the pillows at the top of the bed.

rocklamp · 20/09/2021 16:15

Ours always had beds around the place and just slept where they wanted. Very young kittens were shut in the bedroom with us and a litter tray and some water. They generally climbed onto the bed with us.

thisismyhill · 20/09/2021 16:24

We bought a cat bed and I think she's been in it all of once. She usually sleeps on our fluffy/fleecy blanket either on top of my 6 year old or on the couch. She's banned from my room cause otherwise she would be on my face all night 😂

Beamur · 20/09/2021 16:28

I shut mine in the kitchen until they were a few months old. More to do with making sure they had easy access to litter trays etc.
Now they have the run of the house. They do have beds they use - both a tower and radiator beds are well liked. Or on the sofa or our bed. They have favourite places but do move around.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 20/09/2021 17:47

It's a good idea to confine any new cat to a single room for the first few days - having the run of the house can overwhelm them. Kittens get into everything so confining them can stop those hauling the washing machine out at 3am and then dismantling half your kitchen units nightmares.

Ultimately your kittens will sleep wherever they want to. Cats are notorious for disdaining expensive cat beds so I wouldn't spend a fortune on one.

A warm hot water bottle (the kind you microwave is ideal) can be comforting the first few nights, when kitty is missing mum.

If you let them into your bedroom be prepared for them to parade round your pillows half the night!

ISpyCobraKai · 20/09/2021 17:49

Mine always slept wherever they wanted, generally in mine or Dd's bed.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/09/2021 17:52

Bengals are not for the first time cat owner so it’s good you didn’t get one.

maofteens · 20/09/2021 17:55

Mine do spend part of the night with me (and two dogs) but mostly on some part of their cat tree. My daughter doesn't allow them in her (loft) room and they used to sleep outside her room, but now they are ok with the dogs (and vice versa) my bed is where they end up - partly hoping their super loud purring will wake me up to feed them! I have a litter tray on two floors. Also recommend getting two. At mealtimes they get kicked out of the kitchen/dining/living area as they are just all over you and they seem fine and don't meow too much, so if you want to keep them separate from you it's fine (another reason to get two).
No idea about the breed - ours are Maine Coons (and at five months are about the size of regular cats). Friendly and playful.

Autumngoldleaf · 20/09/2021 20:50

Some of gorgeous cat pics!!

I just worry about worms and fleas as well...

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 20/09/2021 20:51

Worm them and flea treatment them regularly to combat that

Whentheydontmeanwhattheysay · 20/09/2021 20:54

Mine sleeps in one of these -we have 3, 1 downstairs, 2 upstairs.

radiatorbed
Or on me in bed, on a cushion on the dining room chair or on the sofa. Never in her cat bed Grin
