Silly q about kittens

Where do you let them sleep?
Do you have to contain them somewhere? Do they sleep at night?

Will they sleep in their own little cat bed or in a cat bed in the dc rooms?

I'd be scared about dc crushing them or.. The cat suffocating dc in sleep..

@Autumngoldleaf

Thanks, is birmin a good breed? I've read good stuff but mumsnet on bengal totally put me off!
Get rescue cats instead of fancy breeds, moggy's are just as lovely.

Don’t worry about breed. Nip down to your local rescue and find one you click with.

I wouldn’t bother with a kitten either. They’re bitey scratchy hyperactive little bastards 😂. Get a young adult- kittens often change personality as they mature, an older cat you know what you’re getting. Especially as you sound like a first time cat owner.

Did they worm and flea treat them? You still should even if they are house cats as they can be brought in on clothing

Yes they will. In the same way your kids will get nits/worms/warts/impetigo or whatever catchy thing is going round school.

Keep on top of the flea treatment and any that do get in will die and you won’t have a problem.

Newfluff · 20/09/2021 21:00

My cats always slept where they wanted, never where I wanted them to sleep. Worming and decent de flea plus indorex sprat a few times a year.

PetronellaDilemma · 20/09/2021 21:04

Our kitten sleeps anywhere and everywhere - apart from in the soft cosy bed we got for her 😂
We contained her in one room at first, and then just downstairs but now she roams free in the house and usually chooses to sleep on or under one of our beds

BearSoFair · 20/09/2021 21:34

Ours sleeps on the cat tree in the day and on DH's chair in the kitchen at night. She did have a stage of trying to sleep on top of the coat rack but quickly realised that wasn't very comfy Grin

Also, OP, if you do go for a kitten, be very aware that they can be very Hard Work for a few months! Ours is settling now, she's 8 months old, but she's scratched the wallpaper down to the plaster on two corners (she does have posts!), attacked hands, feet, and dangling hair, smashed a lamp, and in her finest moment somehow managed to rip the carpet out from under the metal door strip!

I had my own cat from a kitten a long long time ago. I do remember once she scared the absolute life out of me and went mad crawling up curtains and jumping around!

Our curtains are very weak and loose and fall down easily.

We also have a constant rat problem and we do peridoally put posisnn down... Will that affect the cat.

Please do not put down any kind of poisin in your house and garden. Any rats will be frightened off by your cat. All kittens and young cats have their mad half hours when they zoom round your house, over the furniture and up the curtains. They may well slepp on shelves, wardrobes even the top of doors. Be prepared to move any ornaments and breakable items. I came home one day to find my TV knocked over and one corner broken. It was my birthday but the cats didn't know that

There’s loads of good information on the International Cat Care website:

icatcare.org/advice/thinking-of-getting-a-cat/

Kittens can be very active for at least some of the night, running around playing.

Yes. You need to find another way to control the rats. When the kitten grows up it may be able to help with the rat problem....so thats good!

Not all cats are curtain climbers. My eldest cat LOVED a curtain when she was a kitten. I now have a 5mo kitten who has no interest in curtains at all.

Worrying to see how many slaves are past the point of no return on this thread.

Cats/kittens don't sleep at night when humans sleep. They might cuddle down next to you and pretend to be asleep but the minute you're off, they're up. Watching you. Plotting.

They also put things in your mouth. Spiders and stuff. And they know how to open and close doors.

Anyone who thinks the above is untrue is - as I say - too far gone to be saved. Far too gone down the rabbit hole . . . . which is exactly where you'll be dragged off to one night soon and where you will be kept by your feline tormentor forever.

GreenEggsAndHamPlease · 21/09/2021 15:29

Mine are in a routine now, they have biscuits last thing at night and settle down in their 'beds' - boy cat chose the rocking chair from the get go and it is his domain now, complete with cushions and blanketsHmm Girl cat is more demanding and likes to sleep at the top of the cat tree. If you get a cat tree with lots of perching and sleeping places you might get lucky and they may choose to sleep there, don't count on it though Grin

We put ours in a room at night to start with. Our present two, and last two, never took to cat beds, but obviously needs something soft to sleep on - ours seemed quite happy in boxes with mats inside (also might keep them a bit warmer when heating not on at night).

Our first two ended up sleeping with us, but DH said never again as they kept him awake. Our present two have just accepted we shut them out of the bedroom - they have plenty of places to sleep, box, sofa, conservatory furniture - sometime they just chose the carpet.
Kittens don't climb stairs, they tear up themGrin. They are little balls of energy but it doesn't last too long.

Autumngoldleaf · 22/09/2021 12:30

Yes I would ideally like to discourage bedroom sleeping.

I'm so close to getting a kitten something is holding me back.

It's a half birman
I'd glady use the rescue but years ago it was so hard to get our rescue dog..
I don't know right now if I can go through all that..

hellswelshy · 22/09/2021 13:38

Op - we shut our two downstairs in the living room as most cats tend to be quite active at night! Put a fleece blanket on the sofa or chair and they may like that...or just choose where they like!
Soubriquet thank you so much for the pictures of your cat, my DCat is identical almost as a 6year old but as I had her as a rescue often wondered how she may have looked as a tiny kitten!!

TheWonderCat · 22/09/2021 14:38

Our kitten stays downstairs at night, we shut the door. He sleeps on the sofa or his cat bed.

During the day he has the run of the house so I often find him asleep upstairs.

Ours has wrecked one of the carpets, completely pulled it away from the metal strip. He’s still a bit bouncy but has calmed down.
