When the pigeon flies at the window to leave a body print like a snow angel on the window.

Why does this happen and again AND just when I've cleaned the fucking window.!!

Cos you do such a good job with the cleaning!
Stop washing yer Windows Grin

GoodnightGrandma · 20/09/2021 08:23

I had one hit the window beak first and drop down dead 😱

10ColaBottles · 20/09/2021 08:26

I always check for the injured bird but nothing this time.

The print is incredible though this time. The definition on the wings is v precise.

I'm wondering what kind of gooo they are covered in the make the print !

I have two of those on my patio door right now. I wish it was possible to take decent photos of them because the definition is amazing, down to the beak.

What's weird though is that this is the first year that I've had this happen. I've lived in this house for forty years, and the pigeon collisions are new this year. And they happen almost every day.

The only thing we can think of is that the wall opposite the patio doors was painted earlier this year. The difference is small (magnolia to jasmine white) but nothing else has changed.

I hate the damn pigeons though. I have to pick up poo from my lawn before my toddler DGD visits, and now they've started pooing on my washing!

10ColaBottles · 20/09/2021 08:37

It's odd isn't it. I've definitely had more this year than before. I'd just washed one off before the latest on the clean pane of glass.

Probably 'due to Covid' 😂😂😂

They seem to be roosting in trees in the garden. May time for a tree hair cut !

That and the foxes using my garden as a defecation area. 🤮

If you put something like a dark sheet or paper behind it you might be able to get a good photo.

It's not goo, just grease. The same thing would happen if one of us went head first into a window! They produce grease just like we do.

I might try that later. In one of the two I swear you can see where one eye hit the glass.

Poor bird. But if it's the one that pooed on my duvet cover on Saturday, it's karma I'm afraid.

Allsloppy · 20/09/2021 09:14

I had one hit the window and went to investigate and found a buzzard sitting on it eating it. I assumed buzzard had chased it deliberately to do this.

RedToothBrush · 20/09/2021 09:20

Oooo there might be something in a predatory bird theory.

We've never had a pigeon print before but had one recently. We've also had a bird of prey in our medium sized (suburban) back garden eating a blackbird.

There has been a rise in numbers of birds of prey in recent years - apparently they are at highest levels for over a century - so maybe that combined with more houses is the problem.

Interesting.

RunningStrong · 20/09/2021 09:24

I've resorted to silhouettes of birds you stick on the windows. It does seem to have stopped it.

Shamoo · 20/09/2021 09:27

Just came on to say what @RunningStrong shared - my mum got one of these on each full length window and it’s totally stopped the issue

FreezerBird · 20/09/2021 09:30

Apparently sparrowhawks have been observed hurtling towards pigeons near windows, then picking off the stunned ones.

I've never seen that, but we did have a sparrowhawk fly at the many sparrows on our bird feeder the other day. I don't think it got any, but the alarmed chirping as the all flew away was incredible.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 20/09/2021 09:36

I've got one of these. In exactly the same place as the last one. I thought it was coming into land and hadn't noticed the glass patio door.

I now know it saw it's reflection in the glass, didn't recognise it and thought it was a predator !

It was stunned and sat on the patio for a few hours with a 'support conference' of other pigeons around it !

Oooo that would definitely explain things. It was a sparrowhawk in our garden. I didn't know that.
ToffeeNotCoffee · 20/09/2021 09:42

I'm getting the windows cleaned on Wednesday. If there's another pigeon strike I'll look into getting stick on bird silhouettes for the relevant patio door.

Thelnebriati · 20/09/2021 09:44

I saw a photo of a window print on SM and the OP was asking 'what kind of bird was this?'. People were baffled, but I'm really good at spotting faces in things and showed her it was the side of a mans face pressed against the glass. She'd had a burglar in the garden trying to see her TV in the corner of the room.

BubbleCoffee · 20/09/2021 10:13

You can buy anti-collision bird shaped stickers for the window, to deter birds from flying at them.

10ColaBottles · 20/09/2021 10:16

I hadn't considered they might be looking at the reflection or being chased. Poor birds. :(

Still. It's really annoying !

I considered those, but I love the unobstructed view into my garden and really don't want sticky plastic bird shapes in the way of it.
Fairyliz · 20/09/2021 13:14

Anyone noticed there are a lot more pigeons around this year?
They keep landing on our extension which is under the bedroom window and waking me up. Angry

There are certainly more than usual in my garden. There seem to be at least two 'families' living in my tall laurel hedge and they keep having pigeon fights on my lawn, over the territory. I want to yell "actually this place is MINE!"
MegaClutterSlut · 20/09/2021 14:57

I was going to say probably being chased by something. I've seen a sparrowhawk chase a pigeon, the pigeon went full pelt into a brick wall and was promptly jumped on by the sparrow hawk. It was horrible

Clawdy · 20/09/2021 15:02

I got some quite pretty dragonfly stickers from Amazon, and it stopped the problem completely.
