Free-standing baths in bedrooms. Wrong in so many ways.

Looking at some hotels for a weekend away. Who on earth thinks that having a bath in a bedroom is a good idea? Is it some sort of romantic ideal, like a bubble bath advert?

As a big fan of wallowing in the bath, I like to do it in the bathroom, on my own. Not when my DH is lying on the bed watching the TV in front of me.
Bedrooms for beds, bathrooms for baths!

YANBU. It screams weird sex party.

We used to stay in a beautiful country house hotel that had this. I never have a bath because I prefer showers but my daughter (aged 6 to about 12 when we stayed there) loved it. We'd stay there for family visits which were quite dull for her but being able to luxuriate in a bubble bath in front of the tv more than made up for it.

It's obviously a family preference because her aunt (my DH's sister) built a house nearby a few years later which has a similar bath in the bedroom, looking out over the sea. It's lovely but not lovely enough to tempt me away from the shower.

I don't in theory mind a bath in the bedroom at a hotel, but freestanding baths are shit anywhere. Where do you put your drink and your book?! And no, those weird little granny-style trays that fit across the top are not a solution.

We put in a freestanding bath in our last house, and my book etc went on a stool alongside. It was the most comfortable bath I’ve ever had for reading — back at exactly the right angle etc.

I once stayed in a hotel in Exeter that had the deepest copper bath I’ve ever bathed in — it came right up to my shoulders, and I’m 5 ft 6, and wonderful — but it was at the foot of the bed, which spoiled things rather. Bathing for me is a solitary pleasure.

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 19:21

I love it, an aunt had one in her bedroom & a huge fireplace. No damp issue

gibletjane · 19/09/2021 19:23

But to me a bath is a luxurious thing and should not be in the same room as a toilet.

Ha, my mum thought the same & didn't want the disturbance so our bathrooms had separate toilets.

I always think it's weird if you only have 1 bathroom & toilet in the house, you have to share the experience of someone else going to the toilet when showering or bathing.

HambletonSquare · 19/09/2021 19:26

Love mine at home. A real treat in our master suite, up in the top of the house.

Often, after a stressful day, DH and I share a bath, glass of wine, candles and radio on.
Fantastic, intimate space to relax before bed.

superram · 19/09/2021 19:26

I love them and have one in my bedroom-no damp, I usually open the window when I’m done. I do have frosted glass though!

ichundich · 19/09/2021 19:29

@KillingMeDeftly

You think that's bad OP, I was once looking for a hotel room in Berlin to share with a friend and found one that was very central and a good price. But upon closer inspection I found that the toilet was a frosted glass cubicle in the middle of the room!
I stayed in a similar place in Lisbon once. Most bizarre!
SarahAndQuack · 19/09/2021 19:31

@Steeple - we've got a stool alongside the bath here, but it's just awkward! I love being able to just put something down right beside me without leaning out.

1forAll74 · 19/09/2021 19:35

It would remind me of those period films, where a young woman is sitting in a bath in her bedroom, and her maid comes in to help her to bathe, then helps her into some beautiful gown or nightdress afterwards.

If there was a bath in my bedroom, and it was empty, all my three cats would sit in it.

Oh god that sounds like my worst nightmare Grin Bath time is alone time!
Nesbo · 19/09/2021 19:42

Wouldn’t have it at home but quite happy to have it in a hotel. One person in the bath, one lying on the bed, watch a film, enjoy not having the kids with us…it’s great.

They’re not really for washing in, that’s what the shower is for. They’re for lounging around in naked feeling slightly decadent - which is what a hotel stay without the kids ought to feel like!

36degrees · 19/09/2021 19:49

I've spent a solid 2 hours this afternoon trying to find a hotel room with a bath for two for norty reasons at a price I can afford. Bet that puts even more of you off Grin, don't use a blacklight on one whatever you do.

leavesthataregreen · 19/09/2021 19:49

I hate it. I don't like ensuites but baths actually in the bedroom always make me reject the hotel.

Ruralbliss · 19/09/2021 19:53

Slightly off topic but relevant enough to share that if you book to stay at the Tower Bridge Novotel as I did this summer with my two understandably private teenage kids then you'll have the joy (not) of the design genius (again, not) a glass wall between the en-suite and the bedroom. Wtaf? The 'wall' (pane of glass) being the long wall of the walk in shower.
Admittedly it did have a button to make it opaque which was a bit effective but poor things way too many times did I sleepily take myself off to the loo failing to reinstate the opaque button and kids saw more than any teen kid wants to see of their mum.

On arrival they both announced well that's me not showering for the week. Or we had to make strategic jaunts around the block while the other one had some bathroom time.

Which fuckwit suggested this in which designers meeting and which panel of interior designers signed it off?

Utterly daft.

ThePlantsitter · 19/09/2021 19:56

Ooh I love it! I stayed in one with a copper bath in the middle of the room once, it was lovely but I did feel a bit guilty that the maid had to polish it to a shine every time after I'd used it (while cleaning anyway obvs)

LitCrit · 19/09/2021 19:56

I have one in a big minimal pale wood scandi-style loft and it's lervely! Not damp at all - but it is about 5m from the bed. We have a big old house though so there's very rarely anyone else nearby - if the house was smaller it would feel a bit odd I agree.

We did it because i really really hate showers in baths - hate the thought of lying on the gunky bit of a shower where people's feet are, and the glass screens that you have to stare at are always gopping. There wasn't room to have bath and sep shower in the small family bathroom, we put huge expensive shower in family bathroom and the bath up in our room.

The bath is v minimal and stupidly expensive so it's a nice thing to look at in itself. It's one of my favourite things about the house actually, there's a skylight directly above and it's really relaxing to watch the clouds go by if I bathe in the mornings.

I have a small table next to it for the necessaries - eg OBLIGATORY Aesop shizz and fifty quid candle Grin

LitCrit · 19/09/2021 19:57

Did I tell you it was expensive?

GrumpyTerrier · 19/09/2021 22:02

One of my husband's favourite things to do is chat with me while I'm in the bath. It is nice couple time. We loved doing it in a posh hotel room with a bedroom bath!

I like solo baths too but enjoyed the novelty of the freestanding bath thing.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 19/09/2021 22:08

Ooh no, I hate freestanding baths full stop let alone in the bedroom, every time I see them in photos on Rightmove I think to myself "that bath would be the first thing to go if I moved there".

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 19/09/2021 22:18

Agree I hate it.

Also hate fee standing baths in general - so impractical, nowhere to put your soap/glass of wine/phone, dripping on the carpet when you get out. Crap all round IMO

Nofacedetected · 19/09/2021 22:30

What kind of airhead gets so bored in the bath that they need someone to chat to? Have you no hinterland?

Steeple · 19/09/2021 22:36

Grin I think my bathing hinterland is more extensive than most people’s. The idea of a bathtime chat fills me with horror.
