What show should we see in London in December?

Hi

I'm meeting a friend in London, late December, who I haven't seen for far too long. We want to go to a show and dinner. I've had a shitter of a couple of years and we would like something fun and fairly easy. Mainstream possibles are Mamma Mia or Mary Poppins. Does anyone have any other suggestions for us? Many thanks!

I really wanted to see Hamilton and saw it on Disney plus in the end, I absolutely love the music.. And the first part but the second part was so depressing etc.

Op if you choose mama Mia try and get the box.. It's cheaper than the stalls and you will have your own "suite".. Complete with loo and sitting room.

@milian

Hamilton Hamilton Hamilton

Have you watched Hamilton on Disney+? I thought it was mind numbingly full. Is it better live??

If you’re not easily offended then Book of Mormon. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much at the theatre. We did the lottery and got lucky first time with £15 front row seats.

Come from away and &Juliet are both next on my list. Have also booked Six when it tours next year as it’s much cheaper at our local theatre

Oh I also forgot Only Fools and Horses. If you like the TV show, the show is brilliant. DP said it’s the best thing he’s ever seen and he’s not very keen on the theatre.
I buy all our tickets from TodayTix, usually £15 ones and we’ve never had a terrible seat

@MrsArchchancellorRidcully Not on Disney+ no, I’ve seen it live twice. I would generally say TV versions of plays and musicals are nothing compared to real life though - makes me think of watching “Cats” on a TV on wheels at school …

I didn't like Hamilton the first time I saw it. The songs were OK, but I didn't have a clue what was going on. Then I did some research into the story. Watched it a couple more times. Once with subtitles. Then with DS1 pausing it every so often to check i knew what was happening. I love it now. So much. I'd love to see it live.

Come from Away is amazing. I don't like musicals but I absolutely loved it. There was one sad moment but actually I found most of it uplifting as it showed how the residents of one small town all pulled together and offered refuge to a large number of people whose flights were diverted during the 9/11 tragedy.

Ooh thanks for all the replies. I have seen Wicked. Loved it. I've even been backstage as a friend worked behind the scenes.

I've seen the Disney plus Hamilton, which o really enjoyed. Not sure it's my friend's cup of tea though.

I'm not easily offended, so I'll look into the Book of Mormon. I could do with a laugh.

Lion King.... Yep, I could do that. And a Christmas Carol, definitely one to check out. And I will look into Come from Away. I've never heard of it. A bit of sad could be just what I need, as long as there are plenty of uplifting parts too.

Thank you so much! I'm so excited, I want to go now! I want to go to everything. This is when I wish I didn't live abroad!

And we want to go to dinner after the show. Definitely after.

The Book of Mormon is easily the funniest thing I've seen at the theatre. If you're definitely not easily offended!

I was just going to ask the best place to buy tickets. And then I saw @FizzyPink's post. I'll check that out. Thank you!

What about the Bob Marley musical? It's not out until October, but I can't imagine it can be anything but good.

I’m always surprised so few people have heard of Come From Away. Hope it doesn’t affect its longevity as I’d love to see it again

I think because Come from Away is relatively new and not based on a film, it's less well known outside of London/theatre circles.

It is one of the absolute best though.

You can probably tell it’s my favourite show.

Come from away - especially as this is the 30th year since 9/11.
Pride and prejudice (sort of) is absolutely amazing too though.

20th year.

I’d choose Matilda if I was in London.

Sorry typo - 20th year. We watched Come from away on Broadway 2 years ago having flown in from Newfoundland (St John’s rather than Gander though) and having visited Ground Zero earlier in the day. Incredibly moving experience 💕

I hadn’t realised just how new til I just looked it up. We saw it Christmas 2020 and surprises to read it had been open less than a year at that point. I hope the Apple broadcast leads to an explosion of interest
