What show should we see in London in December?

Hi

I'm meeting a friend in London, late December, who I haven't seen for far too long. We want to go to a show and dinner. I've had a shitter of a couple of years and we would like something fun and fairly easy. Mainstream possibles are Mamma Mia or Mary Poppins. Does anyone have any other suggestions for us? Many thanks!

@TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong

Jamie, Matilda, Six, Waitress or Mormon

Waitress isn’t re-opening though it’s going on tour and Jamie closes soon.

Another vote for Hamilton, finally got to see it Friday night, had front row seats and it was awesomely good! The best thing I have ever seen at the theatre by a mile!

Haven’t read the full thread but the answer is Hamilton, without a doubt. Best thing I have ever seen.

Come From Away. Saw it last night. Absolutely brilliant. Moving but incredibly uplifting. Have seen most of the other shows mentioned here but definitely up there as one of the best .

Wicked is not FOR children.

You could take children, from around 8+ to see it, but it's definitely not a children's story!

That's a surprising conclusion to come to.

@thinkfast

Wicked is for children

Really? It’s been massively sanitised yes but it’s based on a very adult novel & when I first saw it and Rachel Tucker was Elphaba you knew exactly what was going to happen after As Long As You’re Mine.

Hamilton or Tina are both excellent

Mamma Mia
Hairspray
Jersey Boys
Les Mis
Mary popping

I wouldn’t recommend Wicked though…I thought it was shite!

What about Panto? The Hackney Empire do all the classics. Quite bawdy in the evenings Grin.

BoM is awesome. Heard great things about Juliet too.

Thanks everyone, I am very jealous of those of you who regularly go!

I think I am going to try and persuade my friend to see the Book of Mormons!

Is the TodayTix app one where you buy last minute tickets? Is it worth doing for late December or is it a bit risky, and we might miss out on something we wanted to see?

I've seen a lot of musicals in recent years (theatre fan) and the one I always recommend, as others have, is Come from Away.
It won the Best New Musical Award at the Oliviers along with 3 other awards in 2019.
It is a wonderful true story,- totally uplifting, joyous and positive - and you'll leave on a high and not sad at all. ( I promise!)
A stage recording of it has just been released on Apple TV but there's nothing like seeing a live show.
I loved it so much I will definitely go see it again.

@BarbInCarriage

Just to say I like musicals, love theatre - hated Hamilton. Admired the thing itself but really hated it. Watch a bit on youtube first.

Book of Mormon is ace. not for the easily offended though.

Was coming on to offer a word of warning about Book of Mormon too. I would stick to something that wouldn't possibly offend yourself/friend.

We’ve just seen the new Andrew Lloyd Webber “Cinderella” - really good!

Also loved Only Fools, Lion King, Matilda and Book of Mormon.

Seconding Pride & Prejudice (sort of).

Lots of fun and very good!

The Lion King is also fabulous. I'm spoiled though, I saw it in Africa in a theatre built specifically for it. Was very special.
BoM is my fave. Wicked was superb.
9-5 was less superb. shite
I found Hamilton a bit dull, to be honest. The music is great but the story, unless you're particularly interested in the American story is a bit dull. I know that's not a popular opinion.

We are going next weekend, can't wait!

Have already seen Lion King, Wicked and Matilda. Tried the Hamilton lottery but no luck.

Have got the Today Tix app and registered for rush tickets for Hairspray but there only ever seems to be one single ticket available

I can't abide School of Rock.

I guess we are all different.

Interesting there’s so much love for Matilda. We paid a lot for tickets and saw it a week after paying £15 each to see School of Rock. SOR was incredible and we were so excited to see Matilda after all the hype but left feeling a bit deflated. It was good but just didn’t live up to our expectations.

I've seen Hamilton very recently at the Victoria. Took my 14yr old and 10yr old for their respective birthdays and I was mesmerised. We adore it anyway but we all sobbed, cheered and sighed. It's really quite brilliant. Lyrically magnificent and cleverly staged, it's really superb.

But for sheer fun if that's your wish, I'd go for Matilda. Or capitalise on the season and go for A Christmas Carol.

We're going to see Moulin Rouge in December, which I am really excited about. We really enjoyed Book of Mormon and I loved Hamilton. Six was fab but think it is closing soon and Wicked and Manila were great too. I wasn't keen on Pretty Woman.
