Would you do a low skilled job all your life?

Hi all,

I’m just wondering would you do a low skilled job all your life with low pay of around £20,000 a year. Also what would be the least amount of money you would take home per year?!

Thanks

I have nothing but the upmost respect for domestic workers that I come across. For example, my housekeeper allowed me to study whilst working full time.

I could not have done it without her, and her pay packet reflected that.

Services such as these should not be valued less.

Nope, it’s not an option for me. I do dream of being a delivery driver though, if I got the financial opportunity I would do that. Maybe when I retire.

don’t like doing low skilled jobs because they feel it’s beneath them.

I wouldn’t want a low skilled job for life. Not because it is beneath me, I have done plenty of them in my time, but because I couldn’t deal with the monotony of it, I look for a challenge. But, if something happened that meant I needed to do it again, I’d have no problem doing the job.

Would I do a NMW job? Absolutely if it was that or basic benefits. Would I choose to do it over my better paid job for which I've studied and gathered years of experience? No.

My youngest adult son is in a low paid job by choice ( pub) although he has a degree. He’s content and lives within his means, single and renting a flat with a friend. His older brothers also with degrees are high earners, one very high, by choice. They are all different with different outlooks and ambitions.
Everyone is different.

I don't understand the question. Surely for many people, it isn't a choice?

If I had to work in that kind of role for that kind of salary in order to keep a roof over my head and put food on the table, then obviously, yes of course I would. It's a no brainer.

If I was independently wealthy and working in that kind of role even though I didn't have to, then no, I would find something more interesting or rewarding to do with my time. However, I don't suppose many people find themselves in that situation.

If I had the opportunity to improve my prospects by working for promotions or studying in the evenings for additional qualifications, then obviously I'd do that, but again, that isn't an option for everyone.

I don't know what's wrong with regarding a job as being beneath you. I regard a lot of jobs as beneath me, and would rather not do them. There are many people who regard my job as beneath them and would rather not do it. (In fact I'd also not want to do a job which is above me.)

We all have certain skills (and market rates for our work) and I think not wanting to do a job which is a long way out of line with your skills seems perfectly natural.
