Would you do a low skilled job all your life?

Hi all,

I’m just wondering would you do a low skilled job all your life with low pay of around £20,000 a year. Also what would be the least amount of money you would take home per year?!

If I had to yes. Work pays the bills,provides a bit of security and purpose
The wage is relative,in a low cost area is going to stretch further than say London

Outside of London, £20k pa is well above the NMW.
Many people earn that much or less.

It depends on whether the job is enjoyable and worthwhile. Not everyone hankers after climbing the career ladder or accumulating wealth.

That’s higher than minimum wage just so you know.

If I enjoyed it then yes. If I didn’t then no.

Money doesn’t bother me, feeling happy spending most of your days is what I think is most important.

20k is not that low to be honest and looking at advertisements for jobs in my area they would be wanting some skills for that pay.

20k pa is quite a low wage and imo when I’ve done a low paid job in the past it was quite miserable.

Also low skilled workers also end up with shift work, unsociable hours etc so it’s not something I would want to do. My experience is within the care homes though.

If I had to, sure. But I found working for £8k a year 25 years ago (probably about the same level??) very hard and draining. Eventually I left and got a job with more pay. I guess I'd have kept going if there hadn't been any other options.

Because most people I know don’t like doing low skilled jobs because they feel it’s beneath them.

I would if I had to. Sometimes I feel that a job earning that amount of money would surely be less stressful than mine, however, I’m probably completely wrong, it would just be a different sort of stress.

Low skilled like for example cleaning, binmen, litter pickers, McDonald’s etc. And most of the time yes it is low paid

I think covid has proven that some of the jobs ‘beneath them’ are some of the most vital.
I also know older people whose favourite job was factory work. Unskilled but they had loads of fun.
I also know someone who is always wanting more money, won’t do anything beneath him, wants a nice house, nice car, nice life and he’s the most miserable bloke you will ever meet.

Because most people earn a lot more than that amount. And the average wage per year is around 29K

You think thats a low salary? Blimey! I'm a carer. I barely earn enough to pay for my petrol! Obviously I don't do my job for my salary! I hope you can pay for your care when needs must.

I think low paid jobs are usually completely knackering. The lowest paid job i ever did was as a TA. It certainly wasn't boring but bloody hell I was so tired. You needed a microscope to see my salary tbh.

Yes knowing what I know now. Our lives were much easier when we rented from the council and I was a receptionist and he was an odd job man. Now I'm Management (which I hate and am steeping back from) and he's not working. We're finding our lives are becoming a lot less stressful living on less money.

It does seem like a low salary when you’re looking for jobs etc as it’s an entry level salary!
