What is it with posh people & dogs..? And

In our village (2 hours from London) the very posh who work in London during the week have multiple dogs... All similar breeds... Gundogs, Jack Russell's etc who also live in London with the family during the week... All the dogs have similar sounding names... Is it just me whose noticed this? All the upper middle to landed gentry types have at least 2 dogs... Is it similar in your area?

OP wtf??? Posh people and wealthy are allowed to love animals. The fact they have the money to provide them with space, and walkers when they are working means large breeds are no problem. Perhaps they like the intelligence and trainability of working breeds. I do, although my poshness credentials are debatable.

The true landed gentry I know all live in massive falling down houses, which they can' afford to heat or maintain after being crippled by the inheritance bill. Their dogs need to be tough. A chihuahua would freeze to death. A lump of a lab is handy. Isn't the standing joke that if a guest is cold the host will put an extra dog on the bed to warm them up? Grin

@Chesneyhawkes1

I have a jack russell and a working Lakeland terrier. I walk them in Le Chameau leather shooting boots and Joules jacket.

I also have a staffy x - but I change into my Adidas tracksuit to walk him 😁

That's brilliant Grin

@BillyJoe111

Oh, when I was loaded and lived in a big house in the countryside I had two gun dogs, Lilly and Hugo Grin I also wore barbour coats and posh wellies and drove a land rover.

Then my ex h turned into a cliche and ran off with his secretary and took everything (long story).

Now I’m poor and certainly do not live in a big house in the country.

I’d bloody love a golden retriever again. Or just a nice coat. Can’t see a day when I can afford either again!

I'm really sorry your ex was such a knob.

Totally missing the point of the thread - I just bought a lovely barbour jacket from Vinted - admittedly it was a kids one, but I could never afford it brand new!

@Chesneyhawkes1 😂 this made me laugh!! In my head they’re called Tristan & Krystal. I imagine they don’t share a bed surely Heehee

MistySkiesAfterRain · 15/09/2021 12:51

I'm laughing at the idea my Dad is aspirationally posh. I'll have to let him know. He'll genuinely be delighted.

They have a gun dog, intelligent she is, biddable she is not!

Fink · 15/09/2021 12:59

I'm not posh. I'm so not posh that we don't have a dog at all because we haven't got space for one. But I did grow up spending holidays and weekends on my grandparents' (very small!) farm. I definitely don't consider Shih Tzu and the like to be proper dogs, and I wouldn't dream of naming a dog with a human name, ours were always Floss(ie) and Shep and the like. I don't think this marks me out as posh, just countryside-y.

Spudlet · 15/09/2021 13:01

We have a working lab puppy who will be a casual gundog when he grows up. Our old spaniel was a casual gundog too - he was a rescue. We got a puppy this time as we have a small child.

We live in the country but in a ex-council house and we certainly aren’t posh… we’ve just got a posh dog Grin

traintraveller · 15/09/2021 13:04

I've 2 gundogs with human names and work in a city. Not landed gentry though 🙄

Pheasantlysurprised · 15/09/2021 13:07

"our local landed gentry"

Only on mumsnut Grin

LiveatCityHall · 15/09/2021 13:21

I live in a busy town, in a small 3 bed terrace. I am far from posh! I also own a scatty working cocker spaniel. We don't work him at all but likewise, he doesn't require huge amounts of exercise. His breed is renowned for wanting more mental stimulation. In fact, our dog trainer specifically trains spaniels and told me off for walking him too much! Don't get me wrong, he loves his morning walks but it's only for him to snuffle and investigate his surroundings (and to do the school drop off!)

As long as these dogs are getting the stimulation they need and a nice walk either daily or every other day, then I don't see why they can't have them in London during the week?

Polkadotties · 15/09/2021 13:39

A friend of mine has a spaniel, she is being trained as a working dog. You could walk her all day and she would still be bouncing off the walls. Half an hour of scent work and she’s flaked out.

2bazookas · 15/09/2021 13:57

Shuddup , I live in the innercity innit and my pits r called class names 2, like Prince and Rex.

Zuchon · 16/09/2021 07:13

Examples of names include black labs Nero & Storm... A cocker called Bunny & a German pointer called Spot...

I'm delighted to hear spaniels are considered posh, we got our pup because she was less pricy than the current fashionable something-poo type dogs !
She is gorgeous and calm in the house and she won't engage with other dogs when out because she is absolutely obsessed with her ball and a few walks chasing it back and forth has her in heaven !
Sorry but can't stand little yappy type dogs that are referred to as 'rats on a rope' round here !

SirSamuelVimes · 16/09/2021 10:02

I have a gun dog breed OP would consider too big and too posh by the sounds of it... but she has a human name, so now I don't know if I'm posh or not!

I absolutely do know, I'm common as muck. Sad times.

Zuchon · 16/09/2021 10:08

Not posh around these parts with a human dog nameGrin we'll have a kind word for you though if you're around these parts😏

It works the other way as well ime. Some areas are heavily populated with staffies etc who all seem to be called Tyson

LukeEvansWife · 16/09/2021 10:23

Just to clarify I have no issue with staffies at all, it is just the poor little sods all have to wear studded collars and look hard as nails Grin

SoupDragon · 16/09/2021 10:31

What is it with posh people & dogs..?

This makes no sense. So, people you perceive as "posh" have dogs? I mean, as has been pointed out, you could also say "what is it with poor people and dogs but that would have you roundly castigated.

As for "similar breeds" a Labrador isn't similar to a Jack Russell other than both being a dog.

Agree... Also in the large town near us there's loads of poo crosses, cavachon & bichon types... We often go for a walk in the town park there as dc love the playground... We feel much more at home walking our shih tzu there.... The majority of the furry little dogs have human names there! Lily, Daisy, Archie, Alfie etc... It's just a strange observation... The town & our village are only 8 miles apart...

We live on a smallholding and have two working terriers who keep the vermin down. Fine and perfectly acceptable. We also have a rescue French Bulldog who is totally useless as a country dog, gets lost in long grass, wants to be carried in the snow as her tiny little legs mean her belly gets cold etc. I am totally judged by strangers around here if we take her anywhere, especially the men, as a townie that bought a silly dog to dress up and treat like a baby. Our neighbours know better. Though she may be small, the Frenchie is fierce and after spending the first year of her life being horribly abused, and takes no shit. But I do wonder what people think of us when we are all out together at the same time.

Thanks for understanding where I'm coming from! I grew up in this village, DH is from the nearby town & we always felt part of the community until we got our little Shih tzu😁 yes the men are openly judgy with comments like "he's not a real dog" etc... DH doesn't care & will happily bring him to the pub after the Sunday walk.. The pub owner treats our boy like a little celebrity 😁😁
