In our village (2 hours from London) the very posh who work in London during the week have multiple dogs... All similar breeds... Gundogs, Jack Russell's etc who also live in London with the family during the week... All the dogs have similar sounding names... Is it just me whose noticed this? All the upper middle to landed gentry types have at least 2 dogs... Is it similar in your area?

Three of the families have cocker spaniels, I guess these aren't huge but they would still require alot of space that a London garden can't provide....

I am going to totally detail the thread and ask …do the “Londoners” all live in London midweek, including the kids?! And then they go home to their country home at the weekend?

daisyjgrey · 15/09/2021 11:16

@Zuchon

We have an amazing little Shih Tzu but I get the impression he's not considered a real dog around these parts🙄

I'm in rural Devon, there is definitely a lack of that type of small flouffy type dogs here 😂

I’m very posh and have zero dogs, can’t be doing with them TBH

Also don't class this as a "proper" dog

Yes the majority of commuting families live & work in the city Mon to Friday.... Dc go to London day school... Most arrive to their homes in our village Fri evening & head back sun night /early Mon morning...

Of course Shih Tzus are proper dogs... They are an ancient breed from China.

That's not a dog, that's a duster.

Ours would have a different groom, we keep him quite short as he really enjoys his muddy walks... Same face though

Just making an observation! I know the Londoners often complain about how tiny their gardens are in the city.. Then why have multiple gundogs there when you are there Mon to Thurs night

Because London is full of massive parks and no responsible dog owner is restricting its dogs daily exercise to what can be achieved in a garden

Our garden is only 35’ long (and considered big for our area!) but both our dogs run 4-5 miles before breakfast, and we’ve got 700 acres of parks within 5 min of our front door

Anyone who has 3 spaniels and doesn’t take them out of a garden, no matter how big it is, is being unfair to the dogs

They don’t just need to run and stretch their legs, they need to snuffle and smell and explore
Even a half acre garden is boring to them day after day

Dogs like that need to be walked. Not just let into the garden to play with each other

Your duster dog might be happy with that sort of life, but anyone with a normal energetic dog buys them because they want to be out walking with it, not just watching it in the garden

ChiefAdjusterOfRubensShorts · 15/09/2021 11:28

I have a Patterjack who’s a brilliant ratter and I’m not posh, in fact nothing could be further from the truth. Don’t live in the South either…

We have these things called "parks" here. Lot of green space. And evidently they have plenty of space at their weekend home.

What exactly is the issue, or is this just a veiled way of saying you don't like people who have two homes and hiding it behind the implication they don't look after their dogs properly?

MiddleClassProblem · 15/09/2021 11:28

You see labs and spaniels all over London and not just there for the week days… I used to live in zone 2 with two labs on a maisonette but right next to two big parks.

I’m not sure I understand your point. Just that gun dog breeds and terriers are more popular in your area?

Zuchon · 15/09/2021 11:30

I totally understand that, these city folk say themselves that their dogs only get proper exercise at the weekends as they work such long hours during the week in the city... That's what I don't understand, why have large energetic dogs then who need lots of mental stimulation ... My boy is very small but he still needs 2 good walks a day plus a trip out from a sniff around the park in the evenings...

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 15/09/2021 11:34

Why don't you ask them that question? Or report them to the RSPCA if you think they're neglecting their dogs. Or go and think about something else. The fact that some wealthy families split their time between London and country is neither here nor there.

SW1amp · 15/09/2021 11:36

They were used by Chinese royalty to warm their beds

It’s not a proper dog. It’s a hot water bottle with teeth

BillyJoe111 · 15/09/2021 11:37

Oh, when I was loaded and lived in a big house in the countryside I had two gun dogs, Lilly and Hugo Grin I also wore barbour coats and posh wellies and drove a land rover.

Then my ex h turned into a cliche and ran off with his secretary and took everything (long story).

Now I’m poor and certainly do not live in a big house in the country.

I’d bloody love a golden retriever again. Or just a nice coat. Can’t see a day when I can afford either again!

BlueberrySugar · 15/09/2021 11:37

Why does a dog need a human name? It's not a human.

Be a bit weird calling out for Bobs

BlueberrySugar · 15/09/2021 11:37

BOB*

Zuchon · 15/09/2021 11:38

As I said it's just an observation, all the families who split their time between here & the city have multiple dogs who are similar breeds with similar type names... I just thought it interesting & to me it's like a silent social marker..

Probably to them, the term ‘proper exercise’ means a 4 hour walk through woods, snuffling in bushes and working on their training

Mon-Thursday, they are ‘only’ getting a few hours walking around Hyde/Battersea park with the dog Walker or housekeeper which keeps them ticking over but isn’t the ‘proper’ weekend walk

Zuchon · 15/09/2021 11:40

My boy warms my bed too, he's the first in at night & last out in the morning ... Finally I have something in common with royalty 😁

MiddleClassProblem · 15/09/2021 11:42

Well if they don’t have dog walkers or soggy day care when they are at work they are clearly shit owners…

I’m not sure the relation between the names Porky and Snowy and Figo if I’m honest either. They all seem different and Porky doesn’t sound posh at all rather than a jokey name like calling a small dog Butch.

silverbubbles · 15/09/2021 11:42

I have also noticed that posh people have labs and spaniels - gun dog types and poor people have pitbulls and lurchers (fighting or rabbiting types)
