Things you love about Autumn

I enjoy summer but I don't cope with the heat well and am just starting to think about what I'm looking forward to as the seasons change :
Autumn walks, crunching through the leaves
Hot chocolate
Misty mornings
Making lots of winter warmer type meals
Christmas shopping
Snuggling under a blanket on the sofa
Lighting all my candles
Halloween and Bonfire Night
Cosy nights in
Buying new winter wardrobe
Lying in bed listening to the wind an rain
The half term and Easter holidays
Christmas is around the corner
TV really improves and Strictly is back!
I'm sure there's more but these sprung to mind. What is everyone else looking forward to?

Knitwear, oh my god I love a good jumper or cardigan. When the temp drops I disappear behind a massive jumper and won't emerge again until spring 😁

Add a pumpkin spiced latte and a good book and you have heaven.

I think people forget or don't even realise that Seasonal Affective Disorder can actually effect people in the summer too. I become very anxious and depressed in summer. I feel weighed down by the relentless bright light and heat, it all feels too loud, I can't hear myself think. I don't sleep well in the daylight. So all those light mornings and nights everyone loves so much mean I get much less sleep than I need which obviously doesn't help. I've tried blocking out the windows and sleep masks and it doesn't really help. That coupled with seemingly the whole world telling me how much I should enjoy it and how they 'just don't understand how anyone could not like the sun' makes for a not fun time. I'm not being 'miserable' I'm just as affected by the summer as some are by the winter.

I love the autumn and winter because I feel like I can breathe. The light is less intense, I get enough sleep I'm not on constant alert, I'm not too hot, slathered in sticky sun cream and generally feeling like I want to crawl away and hide. It's a relief.

Plus, Halloween is hands down my favourite time of year. Spooky christmas!

Lighting the fire
Cosey nights

FlatteredFool · 15/09/2021 08:27

I love autumn even though I get depressed mid October. Soup, crumble, crisp, sunny days, the nip in the air at night, early nights with a good book, Halloween, bonfire night, Parkin, treacle toffee, Christmas prep, Christmas movies (start September 23/25th I've been told), wild wind and rain, crisp leaves. Autumn is a romantic season I think.

GTAlogic · 15/09/2021 08:32

Cooler weather
Lovely colours
Abundance of free fruit and the resulting delicious pies
Darker evenings and seeing the cosy looking houses with their warm orange lights on
The lead-up to Christmas
Big, fluffy pj tops that feel like wearable bear hugs
Conkers
Pie & mash or stew for dinner
Warm, golden sunlight that makes for beautiful photos

Houseofvelour · 15/09/2021 08:49

Snuggling under a blanket on the sofa with the fire one while it's stormy outside 🥰

Mariell · 15/09/2021 09:03

I prefer the Spring and Summer but I do like the colours of Autumn.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. I have about five autumn jigsaws and I only do them once it's central heating weather.

I wear walking sandals all summer so I feel instantly sexy in heeled boots with jeans.

Rain pitter pattering as I'm working, so much easier to concentrate without glaring sunshine and arguing with the hose of the air conditioner.

Proper skincare instead of soap and a lick of serum.

DP in his massive Frank Butcher cardigan.

firstimemamma · 15/09/2021 09:11

Chunky cardigans

Halloween, my birthday, DJ's birthday
Christmas
I could go on!

Autumn is so cosy
Wearing boots and jackets
Halloween
Lighting the log burner
Candles
The build up to Christmas (from end of November onwards)
All the parties, gigs and events
I hate fireworks though

Bbq1 · 15/09/2021 09:45

Ooh, I love everyone's lists. Makes me feel all cosy! I do struggle with the heat, have an overheating disorder so looking forward to being cool. Sunny but cool, crisp Autumn days are lovely.

I like autumn until the clocks change.
Like others, I enjoy the food. I eat a lot healthier in autumn with all the soups and casseroles. Even my desserts are fruit in cakes or crumbles.
I prefer summer evenings with the patio doors and all the windows open and relaxing in the garden, but don’t mind indoors with a blanket and book or boxset as long as the house is clean and tidy. This means a lot of work for me!

spiderlight · 15/09/2021 10:25

Everything! Misty morning dog walks through crunchy leaves, not having to time everything so he doesn't get too hot, soft cosy jumpers, soup, harvesting at the allotment, apple crumble with apples we've picked ourselves, blackberries, spiderwebs covered in dew....oooh, I just love it all!

FlatteredFool · 19/09/2021 09:44

It's doesn't feel very autumnal just yet. Yesterday it was 22 degrees and sunny here. Today it is raining. In the 1st October I will change my summer garden flag to my Halloween flag. I need a general autumn one really. I'm going to make an apple and blackberry crumble today with the blackberries we picked yesterday. I've still got my summer duvet on the bed and I'm looking forward to my 10.5tog going back on and getting snuggly in bed instead of feeling hot and bothered.

sueelleker · 19/09/2021 10:21

Crisp, sunny days, sometimes with a touch of frost. I call it dog-walking weather!

millievanille · 19/09/2021 11:07

I love threads like this 🍁🍂
Autumn is my favourite season. I love falling leaves, shorter days, pumpkins, traditional Halloween, big autumn moons, colder weather, my slow cooker, scented candles and warmer clothes. Some tv channels show the first Christmas films around October which I know is too early, but it's nice to see things gradually start to become Christmassy! I've said it before but I sometimes wish we did thanksgiving in this country because it always looks so nice on films!

elp30 · 19/09/2021 23:58

This is such a lovely thread.
I always loved autumn when I lived in England.
It was so nice to wear sweaters, scarves, boots and coats.
I'm a big lover of slow-cooked stews and soups, roasted vegetables and the smell of warming spices in the kitchen.
Hot chocolate and cider
My skin tone is more suitable to colors like rust, dark blue, dark greens (not olive), brown, golden mustard, burgundy, aubergine...
I love the sound of a crackling fire, crunching leaves and the breezes through trees...

But I live in Texas now and autumn doesn't actually happen until sometime in November. It was 90F/32C today and its been known that children and parents are wearing shorts under their Halloween costumes and sweating. Heck, even Christmas Day will be 75F/23C so turkey or a baked ham is made with the a/c on.

However, my autumn is the sound of children playing in the school playground and the sound of the school "in-service" bells to signify the start, recess periods, lunch and end of the school day. The sound of diesel yellow school buses on the road. The local high school marching bands practicing their shows in their school parking lots along with the cheerleaders rehearsing their cheers and formations. Plus, you can hear the football teams practicing on the school fields. There's a lot of numbers being called out then words like "hut" and "huddle". The high school teams play against each other and it's known as the "Season of Friday Night Lights". Texas does it amazingly well.
You go to the stores and there's nothing several aisles of school supplies and school supply lists that parents must supply and the sound of people, exasperated and asking to no one in particular: "What is a folder with brads? I only see them with 'prongs'." (Hint, they're the same thing!)

I suppose it's all good.

Furries · 20/09/2021 02:22

Always seeing crunchy leaves on these threads. They’re never bloody crunchy where I am. They are sodden and slimy and a blooming skid hazard!

The only thing I “like” is counting down the days to 21 December and knowing that then the days start getting longer again.

EssentiallyDisorganised · 20/09/2021 06:50

There are horse chestnut trees here, if the weather is dry when they fall we have masses of crunchiness, but they do turn to slime if its wet.

megletthesecond · 20/09/2021 06:55

Nothing.
Counting the days until the snowdrops here.

GoodnightGrandma · 20/09/2021 07:00

Dog walks through the crunchy leaves and hunting for ‘gifts from god’ - a lovely, shiny conker.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 20/09/2021 07:06

I've had to Google cheggy and lobs Ouse so far.

I quite like autumn but also feel a vague sense of doom as our British winter is just too long and I always feel desperate for sun by February.

Plus sides: jigsaws, fires, cosy food, new clothes.
