If you are not a veggie household how many non meat evening meals do you eat a week?

Having recently read a few different threads this is something I’ve been thinking about. We probably have at least three, sometimes four, meat free meals a week. Not for any particular reason (health, environmental, cost saving etc) but just because there are a lot of veggie meals we like as much as meat or fish based.

I wonder if it’s some what generational, I know my parents generation seem to eat more meat based meals and I know for sure my grandparents were a lot more in the ‘a meal isn’t a meal with out meat or fish,’ camp.

Usually 6 meat/fish free. We only really eat meat if DH picks up steaks, maybe once a month, or a Sunday roast every few months. We’d have fish once every week or two. We have things like curry’s, stir fries, baked potatoes and tacos without any meat and prefer vegan sausages, sausage rolls etc so don’t really miss it. We usually have fish once a week.

I don’t eat much meat for health reasons and DH loves meat but not enough to cook a separate meal!

@TippledPink

None- I can't think of any veggie meals that we would like?
Wow - not even one ?
LizzieSiddal · 14/09/2021 23:07

We only eat meat about twice a week. If you’d told me this 5 years ago, I wouldn’t have believed you. Dh was brought up on a farm and wouldn’t dream of having a meal without meat. Dd2 became a veggie at 16, she made a lot of yummy veggie meals which we all enjoyed and we just gradually reduced meat to a few times a week. We also buy it from a local community farm shop where all meat is very local.

About 2-3 perweek.
Mainly macaroni cheese, vegi curry or chilli, vegetables & pasta, omlette

Lyricallie · 14/09/2021 23:08

About 50/50 we like to make lots of curries with tofu and paneer. Also sometimes just gnocchi and tomato-y sauce with veggies.

PeanutButter82 · 14/09/2021 23:15

An average week would be:
4 nights veggie or vegan
2 nights meat
1 night fish

leavesthataregreen · 14/09/2021 23:16

About 3-4 a week without trying. I love meat and fish but we tend to buy them about twice a week. Most nights it's veggie pasta or omelettes, baked potatoes with coleslaw and cheese or veggie curry with rice,

NoYOUbekind · 14/09/2021 23:24

On average, 2 nights veggie, one night with fish. If I'm on the ball, one other night will be very little meat, eg some pancetta in a pasta sauce or a couple of handfuls of leftover roast chicken in fajitas bulked out with veg.

If we get a takeaway I order veggie as I try to only eat higher welfare meat.

We're back to doing not bad on this after a few months where it was very meat-driven, but I would like to get it up to 3 proper veggie meals a week. Trouble is I'm low carbing so my usual go-to of veggie pasta sauces don't really work for a family meal...

ZenNudist · 14/09/2021 23:33

Twice a week, more if you count meat free lunches. I also have one meat free day sacrosanct for religious reasons but can eat fish. So I usually have vegetarian lunch and fish dinner on Friday.

Stumpedasatree · 14/09/2021 23:36

2 veggie
1 fish
rest probably meat, but usually leftovers figure in that

ChevreChase · 14/09/2021 23:41

Two meat meals, sometimes just one. Also free range only, so availability is an issue, as am quite disorganised about meal planning, meaning meat is often only at weekends unless I have some mince in the freezer mid-week. So, last night I roasted a chicken for the first time in months, leftovers in a pie tonight, and then it'll be veggie and fish based meals for the rest of the week. Cheese plays a big part in my life.

TippledPink · 14/09/2021 23:43

@TheGrumpyGoat I assumed the op meant dinners? If we mean all meals then a third of my meals are veggie as I only have cereal for breakfast. I have cornflakes every morning, either chicken and veg soup or tuna bagel for lunch and a meat meal for dinner. I would love to eat more veggie dinners but nothing ever appeals.

@Bobsyer I never have chips at home so wouldn't have egg and chips, beans on toast is not a dinner to me and too many calories for a lunch, pesto pasta we always have chicken with it or it feels a bit crap- I do pesto pasta for the kids as a crap can't be bothered to cook type meal.

ANameChangeAgain · 14/09/2021 23:46

Even though we are a 50% vegetarian household, the meat eaters only eat vegetarian a couple of nights a week. The meat eaters are into farming and shooting, so the freezer is always full. At least its ethically sourced, or as ethically as it can be.

PickAChew · 14/09/2021 23:50

None. Autistic boys with restricted diets. We offset with higher welfare meat for most meals.

PickAChew · 14/09/2021 23:51

Plenty of meat free lunches for me and dh, though.

LiamGallagherIsHot · 14/09/2021 23:53

Only my partner and one of my kids eat meat. They have meat with their evening meal three times per week, sometimes less. If my son didn’t want it, my partner would eat it less. They don’t really eat fish.
Most people we know have really cut down on meat/fish due to ethical/environmental reasons in the last few years. Lots of my friends are vegan like me, most of our kids are vegetarian or vegan.

LiamGallagherIsHot · 14/09/2021 23:58

My FIL seems to associate masculinity with eating meat and seems to think his son and grandson not eating meat every day is terrible. Seems to be a common though process in the older generation.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/09/2021 00:07

Usually 2-3. Probably more in cold weather - v thick, main meal veg soups are popular in this house.
Cauliflower cheese with baked potatoes is a favourite, and a couple of pasta things with tuna or salmon.

Kite22 · 15/09/2021 00:07

Perhaps once or twice a week. We might have something like jacket potato (though some people might have tuna, others might have cheese / beans) or omelette (again, some might put ham in theirs, others not). Never a particularly conscious decision to not eat meat (unless we have veggie guest)
Occasionally have mac cheese.

Anoisagusaris · 15/09/2021 00:20

@TheGrumpyGoat OP asked about evening meals not breakfast and lunches.

Anoisagusaris · 15/09/2021 00:23

Not enough is my answer.

KingdomScrolls · 15/09/2021 00:24

Two or three a week and a couple of nights at least we have fish/seafood, just because those are meals we like to eat. Not sure it's generational my in laws (60/70s) are vegan and two of my aunts (50s) and their husbands are vegetarian

HSHorror · 15/09/2021 00:24

I dont know really.
Pizza cheese/tom
Dc1 eats cheese wrap every day
Cheese toasties
Tom soup and bagette

Ive had acfew meal replacement bars or shakes

I would just be aware of b12 deficiency or iron anaemia if reducing meat

I find it odd at school only veggies csn have the vegetarian ootions.

LemonSwan · 15/09/2021 00:25

c. 3 on average

KingdomScrolls · 15/09/2021 00:26

Sorry I've answered in a confusing way, 2/3 nights veggie plus two at least fish/seafood. So probably only eat meat twice a week on average for dinner
