Just my son's lunch!

My year 5 son now has packed lunches. He has a variation on this most days, (though today he randomly had left over pasta with lamb).

In your opinion is this the right amount of food for lunch/snack and is it healthy enough or too processed for every day? In the mini wrap it is humous. Sometimes he has two mini wraps. Any ideas welcome! Thanks

Just my son's lunch!

Check the salt content as pepperami and the crisps might add up to quite a bit

Palavah · 14/09/2021 17:28

As an adult i wouldn't have a packet of crisps every day.

This.
girlmom21 · 14/09/2021 17:29

I'd put some cucumber sticks in there or more carrot sticks.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 14/09/2021 17:30

I'd leave out the pepperami or swap it for something. Looks fine though and a lot better than some kids take.

Tanfastic · 14/09/2021 17:31

Looks fine to me but I expect you'll get people coming along saying it's outrageous.

user1471543683 · 14/09/2021 17:34

Looks absolutely fine to me. Some of the packed lunches I see are absolutely shocking. As long as the child is active on a daily basis I dont see an issue.

RubyGoat · 14/09/2021 17:35

Do you mean the hummus in the pot is for the wrap, or is that extra for the carrot sticks? Is he fussy about fillings for wraps - I'm just curious why you've put hummus in his wrap & apparently also for dipping. IDK - maybe he just really likes hummus! Personally, given that you say he eats meat, I'd probably have put some sliced chicken or other meat in the wrap. Or grated cheese maybe. The crisps & peperami are ok choices but I wouldn't give both on the same day, quite salty & processed, would he eat a yoghurt instead of one of those, you can get some relatively decent ones or you can decant some plain yogurt into a small pot & put some berries in.

OnlyFlans · 14/09/2021 17:36

My year 5 would still be hungry after that but then he's v active and always hungry!

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 14/09/2021 17:36

At DS2's school they're really strict about including all the food groups and when he had packed lunches he couldn't eat it all. Having said that, that packed lunch looks too small for him, but it depends on your DS's appetite. DS2 would have had a full size wrap filled with some kind of protein, a handful of veg, a handful of fruit, a yoghurt and water. Treat food (one of) only on Friday.

Glittertwins · 14/09/2021 17:38

I'd alternate chicken in place of pepperami as they are salty and fatty to have every day and add some sliced cucumber, cherry tomatoes if he likes them. Maybe a small piece of cheese

That's basically the exact same sized meal as the one posted that you said is too small with the exception of a little more veg
Steelesauce · 14/09/2021 17:43

If he's happy with that, thats all that matters. My year 5 would be hungry after that but he's a gannet and never stops moving.

Steelesauce · 14/09/2021 17:47

My lad has a full sized wrap/sandwich/bagel/pitta with whatever filling he fancies. Fruit/veg pot, frube, cheese dunker, bag of crisps and a treat (animal biscuits, wagon wheel, fruit winder, biscuit). Very active and skinny as a rake.

TinselTime21 · 14/09/2021 17:48

My 3 year old would take
1.pitta with ham, cheese, or crackers, sandwich etc
Grapes strawberries and 1 other fruit.
(doesn't like salad items or carrots raw.)
Crisps
Mini cookies, ice gems or whatever
Yoghurt
Babybel or other cheese

And pre school provide am and pm snacks.

She's not over weight and active so I'm happy she's a great eater

My nr 2 year old on the other hand
Wouldn't eat that in an entire day and a half. He eats a teeny amount and hardly any variation

Ops son is 9 or even 10
ManifestDestinee · 14/09/2021 18:10

Crisps and a pepperami is a lot of salt. I don't know what age year 5 is but anything less than teens I wouldn't give both.

Mymapuddlington · 14/09/2021 18:13

Honestly if there’s anything wrong with it the school will let you know. Our local primary you can’t take crisps.
Looks fine to me 🤷‍♀️

FuckingFlumps · 14/09/2021 18:15

It's not much for a 9 or 10 year old to be honest, most children that age would still be hungry. That's about my only criticism.

Camomila · 14/09/2021 18:16

My 5 year old would love that lunch - he is also a big hummus fan.

Instead of the crisps/pepperami he'd have a yoghurt at school though.

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/09/2021 18:19

It looks fine to me, but you'll have them forensically calculating the exact nutritional content to two decimal places, op.
You'll be really sorry you asked Grin

Plumtree391 · 14/09/2021 18:23

I can't see what the 'oven baked' thingy is. I know it can't be a cold jacket potato :-).

Hummus is lovely, yum.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 14/09/2021 18:23

I think either pepperami OR crisps, whether they're 'oven-baked' or not they're still packed with salt.

LuchiMangsho · 14/09/2021 18:26

So my 9 year old has wraps with fish fingers/sandwiches/egg fried rice/pasta. Then two fruits or two fairly substantial helping of fruit. And one quite large yoghurt. For snack he has a banana. And another yoghurt. (Yoghurt is plain Greek).

It’s fine if the school says it’s fine and he’s not hungry. Personally I wouldn’t give a kid crisps every day but I couldn’t get worked up about it.
