Just my son's lunch!

dawnwalk · 14/09/2021 17:24

My year 5 son now has packed lunches. He has a variation on this most days, (though today he randomly had left over pasta with lamb).

In your opinion is this the right amount of food for lunch/snack and is it healthy enough or too processed for every day? In the mini wrap it is humous. Sometimes he has two mini wraps. Any ideas welcome! Thanks

Looks about right to me

MeredithGreyishblue · 14/09/2021 18:29

My Y5 would eat that without the hummus. We'd swap the crisps for Wotsits out of preference and he would probably leave either the apple or the pepperami a couple of days because he wants to get out and play!
You know your own kid.
Some posters on here would have you arrested for it though! Grin

My year 6 child - age 10 - has a pitta bread with cheese and cucumber/ a sandwich with the same, an apple or orange, vegetable sticks (pepper, carrot, tomato), plus two mini brownie bites. If she'd eat a yoghurt I'd give her one, but she doesn't like them 'warm'.

She comes home hungry and has a snack before tea, then eats a good dinner.
My older child has the same at lunch, but rarely finishes it and picks at dinner. I tried giving more but it ended up in the bin.

There's a huge variation in appetites in children (I'm a dinner lady). Is your child hungry, maybe try bread rather than a wrap?

DontStepOnTheMomeRathz · 14/09/2021 18:33

As an adult i wouldn't have a packet of crisps every day

More fool you Grin

StarryStarrySocks · 14/09/2021 18:34

@Plumtree391

I can't see what the 'oven baked' thingy is. I know it can't be a cold jacket potato :-).

Hummus is lovely, yum.

It's a packet of crisps!
JessicaPeach · 14/09/2021 18:34

I put quite a bit in for my year 3, none of it that great though! He has the same for a week or so then changes to another filling etc. At the moment he's having a ham wrap, a pepperami, some cheese cubes, about 10 grapes, a little sausage roll or some hummus and breadsticks, a squeezy yoghurt and if I remember, a 'dessert' like 2 party ring biscuits. I like to put plenty in for lunch and I don't mind if he leaves it, usually he leaves half the wrap but eats the rest.

DontStepOnTheMomeRathz · 14/09/2021 18:35

I wouldn’t ask on here anyway OP.

Soon it’ll be “my son only gets a dry weetabix on special occasions!”

(Quite sure someone actually said that about a ham sandwich once…)

Obviously crisps. Never heard of Walkers?
Hugsgalore · 14/09/2021 18:40

@bruffin

I really wouldnt ask in here most of the answers are from posters with eating disorders
I also agree with this.... God forbid you give you child anything that nature hasn't 100% produced itself!
Simonjt · 14/09/2021 18:41

Anyone going to pretend they don’t know what crisps are, or is that just limited to quavers?

Looks fine, but it doesn’t look enough to fill a child of that age, school would let you know if it didn’t meet their packed lunch policy.

InnPain · 14/09/2021 18:42

Looks decent to me, if my DC ate that I’d be happy

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/09/2021 18:44

@girlmom21

I'd put some cucumber sticks in there or more carrot sticks.
Why? There's carrot sticks already 🙄
NoSquirrels · 14/09/2021 18:45

Well, does your child eat it all and complain they’re still hungry, or do they leave half of it?

As you’ll see from replies already, some people think you’re practically starving him, some say it’s way too much, and most agree it should be crisps or pepperami and not both cos of the salt.

I think it’s fine, really. If they eat it then carry on!

NeurologicallySpeaking · 14/09/2021 18:55

I don't have an ED but wouldn't give that to my child everyday. Pepperami and crisps are 'treat' items rather than everyday to my mind, particularly given health risks of red meat- I would prefer to give more nutritious red meat rather than something poor quality daily. Maybe put those two items on different days and something else the other three

Derbee · 14/09/2021 18:55

You’ll get crazy responses here, OP. MN a is a strange place in regards to food.

However, I do agree with PPs that I wouldn’t give my child crisps every day

jessycake · 14/09/2021 19:01

If you look up yumbox ideas on instagram or childrens packed lunches , you can find lots of ideas . I wish they had been invented when my kids were young, as you can put small amounts of a variety of foods in the compartments .

Embroidery · 14/09/2021 19:05

Boycotting sweet things leads to adults who eat 4 x choc bars a day.
I wasnt allowed chocolate cake sweets as a child and now I have them constantly. Lots of pp are like me.
Moral of tale : dont boycott sweet stuff.

My ds has ham or other sandwich, crisps, piece of fruit, club biscuit and juice.

CottonSock · 14/09/2021 19:06

My yr4 has similar but yesterday I was told it was not enough (by her). I don't think they get enough time to eat more. Plus she leaves all her crusts which would be filling.

girlmom21 · 14/09/2021 19:11

@GreyhoundG1rl there are 3 carrot sticks. I'd personally expect a child to eat more veg than that 🤷‍♀️

Peanutsandchilli · 14/09/2021 19:11

I'd swap the Pepperami for a chocolate bar, but I'm not the health police. My daughter is in year 7 and takes a ham and cucumber sandwich, bag of crisps/mini cheddars, a chocolate biscuit and a couple of bits of fruit. Her older sister doubles up on the chocolate and misses out the sandwich, but they're at high school and have the freedom of the canteen and the local shop so if they didn't take it, they'd buy it.

Mudandrain · 14/09/2021 19:14

Looks fine, I would maybe add one more thing as they might still be hungry. Yogurt or cheese?

Plumtree391 · 14/09/2021 19:15

furbaby: Obviously crisps. Never heard of Walkers?
....
Yes! D'oh Blush.

I broke my reading glasses.

He has three of his 5 a day in that meal, carrots, houmous and an apple

Palavah · 14/09/2021 19:20

Is 3 carrot batons = 1 portion?

girlmom21 · 14/09/2021 19:20

@bruffin I forgot what hummus was made of. I'm on board now Grin
