How much maternity clothing did you get and when?

I'm 12 weeks but there is a definite bump! I'm looking at maternity clothes on boohoo but it feels frivolous to spend money on clothes you will only wear for six months. However I don't think I will be able to get in my jeans much longer!

I would suggest investing in a pair of jeans and some maternity leggings or similar, but for tops and stuff just see how you go. I normally wear a size 8-10 and even now at 39 weeks I'm just wearing a size 14 'normal' t-shirt rather than specific maternity clothes. I can also fit into some size 12 - 14 'normal' trousers if I wear them under bump which again means they're cheaper than maternity clothes, and there's lots more choice. Most maternity ranges are online only, but if you just size up in regular clothes you can actually see them in the shops first.

For two pregnancies - both over summer and working full time - I had for 'special' clothes
1 red linen dress with jacket (I got marrierd in that)
1 red linen maxi dress sleeveless with zippers in both sides (loved that)
1 pair of dungarees
1 pair of black jeans
3 wide flowing tops (one of which I have worn over summer until last year, the colours were absolutely lovely)

I bought 3 pairs of jeans last time from ebay, they did me great, then a few dresses that it turns out I hate, too clingy and revealed every lump and bump.

This time I've bought 2 tops in my normal size that are styled baggy so they should do me through. I am in the awful between stage, 24 weeks, too big for my normal jeans and my maternity wear is way to big. I've resorted to hacking an old pair of jeans apart and sewing an elastic panel in. They are great now, but I'll need to do it again as my bump gets bigger. I'm hoping they can be fixed back to my pre-pregnancy size if once my bump goes down.

I got a good bit on my first but kind of casual bits more like leggings ect that I could also use in work, but it was great on my second as they were all still in great condition so I didn’t have to buy a single thing. I exercise a lot so was glad of the extra bits to reduce how fast I had to get things washed to wear again. I was also in maternity clothes a bit after the birth(bump took a while to shrink down!)

Mangomammy · 14/09/2021 09:54

Definitely a worthwhile investment - nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable!

Boohoo do maternity/ nursing tops which might be good if you’re planning on breastfeeding. Tbh, boohoo is very reasonably priced as well, so is new look. I didn’t get much maybe 4 dresses for work, some leggings, shirts, 2 jumpsuits and 3 “nice” dresses, I normally have 20+ outfits to choose from for work so it feels very repetitive, but I didn’t want to spent a lot on clothes for 5 months of wearing either.

Congratulations on your pregnancy- I hope you keep well Flowers

SBAM · 14/09/2021 09:56

I got quite a bit, both workwear and jeans & tops for outside of work, but chose tops to be nursing suitable where possible. Quite a lot of maternity clothing can be close fitting around the stomach and I wanted loose nursing tops for afterwards - having things clinging to my belly when it wasn’t filled with baby just didn’t feel comfortable for me.
I found Dorothy Perkins and H&M maternity wear nice.

CaramelWaferAndTea · 14/09/2021 09:57

I bought leggings and long maternity vests, and a couple of dresses from seraphine for work new, and some pregnancy/BF tops and a blazer for work second hand. I am 17 weeks now in my second pregnancy and bought a couple more vests and an extra dress (I go into work every day) and a pair of ordinary hush harem pants which I think will keep me going for pregnancy and the postnatal period. The great thing about the vests is they cover the whole bump and then you can just put loose tops or your/your partner’s shirts on top. I found last time that very little covered my bump all pregnancy but I’m tall.

ManifestDestinee · 14/09/2021 09:57

None. I never wore any maternity gear, the ones I tried were weird shapes and didn't fit.

MaverickDanger · 14/09/2021 09:58

I was pregnant last year so didn’t need any work clothes etc.

I just wore my “fat” jeans till about 20 weeks and then bought a pair of jeans, a skirt and a pair of leggings, with about 5 tops and 3 jumpers. I put on a fair bit of weight but still wore my usual size.

I’d have a look on Vinted, you’ll pick up some bargains there. Probably stuff still with tags on etc.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 14/09/2021 09:59

I got stuff as and when I realised I needed it. I think I ended up with a pair of jeans, some smart-ish trousers, some leggings and a couple of tops. Also a swimming costume because I swam a load.

Avoid ASOS maternity range. Extremely poor quality.

RedMarauder · 14/09/2021 10:00

Go and buy a pair of jeans if you are struggling to fit into your current ones.

How many items of clothing and the type you need depends on where you work, your hobbies and what season it is.

So for example my friend had to get a coat to fit her as she was heavily pregnant in winter - she just got a much larger size - there as I was heavily pregnant in summer so didn't need one.

However I found my normal tights uncomfortable around 14 weeks into my pregnancy so I had to get some pregnancy tights.

I continued to go to the gym/classes so I got two pairs of pregnancy leggings, 2 sports bras and 4 different sized large tops - these were simply mens tops. In the case of the leggings I found each pair fitted better at different stages. The tops I've just given to my partner.

tofuschnitzel · 14/09/2021 10:00

I had my twins in May this year. I think I started wearing maternity leggings from about 12-14 weeks of my pregnancy, I just wanted to be comfortable. I had five pairs of maternity leggings, one pair of maternity jeans, (the ones from New Look are actually pretty decent), two maternity dresses, and about twelve long sleeved and short sleeved tops. I was only really leaving the house for medical appointments or to go to the supermarket, so I bought clothes with that in mind. I didn't see many friends or family during my pregnancy because of the pandemic. I didn't want to spend lots of money on maternity clothes, and I thought I could get away with wearing bigger sizes of normal tops, but the comfort of maternity clothes cannot be denied! No pulling down tops or having to worry about fit. Be kind to yourself and buy some actual maternity clothes. Comfort is paramount. I still didnt spend very much money, Sainsbury's and Asda sell some good maternity basics, you don't need to spend a lot. I'm still wearing the maternity tops four months post-partum. I wear them to bed, or around the house. I don't want anything clinging to my stomach, and I didn't want the clothes to go to waste, so I'll wear them as long as possible.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 14/09/2021 10:02

Ah I should also say I 'sized up' before I got maternity wear. I was a size 12 pre-pregnancy so just went to a size 14 for a while. This was really good in hindsight because I then wore those clothes again in the few weeks/months after having my baby whilst my body normalised.

Congrats! Its such an exciting time 🙂

InnPain · 14/09/2021 10:03

@RosieLemonade In my opinion it’s a total waste buying maternity clothes, better to go to the men’s section in primark and grab a few larger t shirts and get some larger sized lounge bottoms from the ladies section. Plus, you won’t feel so bad chucking these away when you’re done with them if they are of no further use. Keep it cheap and cheerful I’d say.

Onaloop · 14/09/2021 10:03

I am 32 weeks pregnant and really haven't wanted to spend much money on maternity clothes because I think it's a bit of a waste of money and I don't have a lot spare and I'd rather spend it on stuff for the baby.

As my bump has grown I knew I needed some trousers/underwear so I bought 4 pairs of maternity leggings (h&m) and several pairs of maternity pants (lindex from Asos). I also bought a couple of cheap strappy tops in a size 14 (I'm usually a 10) for when it was super hot in the summer. I have some large t-shirts to wear over the top of the leggings like dresses, and some other stretchy tops which I wore before I was pregnant but still stretch over my bump. My jumpers from last winter still fit but just ride up a bit or they are oversized anyway so it doesn't make a difference. I also wear some of my husband's shirts. Someone donated a maternity dress to me but it feels like a bit of a tent!

Ozanj · 14/09/2021 10:03

I bought shirred waist tops and dresses (the ones that can be worn off and on the shoulder) in my normal size & button down shirts & I’m still wearing them 2 years in as they are so useful for breastfeeding. New Look and Asos is good for clothes that can crossover from maternity to nursing to normal wear.

Jujujuly · 14/09/2021 10:04

I hate boohoo for ethical reasons, though tbh I got my maternity jeans in H&M and they probably aren’t much better. First pregnancy I got some smart work clothes from seraphine on eBay and the H&M jeans. Second time was during lockdown so I lived in maternity leggings (I think from gap) and baggy t shirts. I also got a load of crop top style bras from M&S (they come in small/medium/large) which was handy as boobs kept changing size so I didn’t want to get specific sizes. They doubled up as nursing bras too. First time round I didn’t need maternity clothes til about 26 weeks, second time it was more like 18 weeks.

Errr this isnt really a solution if you have to look vaguely presentable at work

Pikamoo · 14/09/2021 10:07

I bought a couple of pairs of maternity jeans, some maternity leggings and one party dress the maternity jeans were great from 12 weeks but the party dress I only needed for a party at 39 weeks because by that point all my dresses made me look like a whale. I did buy some new clothes that worked with a bump once I got to about 30 weeks when my existing clothes stopped fitting but they weren't maternity specific and I still wore them once I wasn't pregnant.

nc4565 · 14/09/2021 10:07

1x maternity jeans (H&M)
2x Maternity leggings (H&M)
And a selection of maternity tops, short and long sleeve (Seraphine)

BiddyPop · 14/09/2021 10:10

I got 1 decent pair of work trousers and a jacket to go with that to work as a suit, a mat shirt and about 4 plain mat tops (2 sleeveless and 2 long sleeved, at least 2 were white, 1 was black and I think 1 pink). I also got a pair of jeans and a couple of belly bands (latter from H&M).

I got the suit at 10 weeks, to make sure I had clothes suitable for work. I got the jeans the same day. The tops I picked up later on as the bump grew, and the bands. And I also got a (really useful!!) long black cardigan to go over things - I hadn't bothered to get a mat coat and the cardigan, with a few layers underneath and a winter scarf, worked sufficiently well even for a late December baby. I also got 1 other pair of work type trousers, which were dark grey pinstripe (so not nearly so useful - but worked with my jumpers/tops ok when I wasn't wearing a jacket of some sort).

I also had 3 normal M&S polo neck jumpers (2 black, 1 red) that I figured would stretch (and I was prepared to sacrifice as I had about 6 at the time - but they went back into shape afterwards surprisingly well). I made good use of scarves and long necklaces that I already had to make "black trousers and polo neck" look different. I wore the shirt as a jacket over the white tops somedays, and the shirt under the proper jacket on others. And I could also wear the black trousers with the black cardigan as a much more casual outfit (not office wear but for smart casual - like Christmas Day etc).

At home, I wore a pair of regular yoga pants a lot for comfort (they dipped below the bump) and large t-shirts. I had found an XXL rugby shirt (for the province I support anyway) on clearance, which I brought to an alterations place to get the sleeves taken up (not being the 6'4" and 18st man it was designed for! Grin ) and that was great for casual wear over vests, regular tops and the mat tops, with the jeans or yoga trousers, for less than the full price cost of a rugby jersey. And I had an already old pair of leggings that I slobbed around in with the cardigan hiding a lot.

The hardest thing was sorting bras, both while pg as my shape changed, and afterwards when I was bf'ing.

My suit was expensive (but necessary as I did work in a professional office), but I got a LOT of wear out of it. I also got a lot of wear out of the jeans and the shirt, so they were worth the maternity boutique price I paid for them. The rugby shirt was great to slob around in. The H&M mat range at the time was decent for plain tops at reasonable prices.

And don't forget that you don't immediately shrink back to pre-pg size and shape. I was surprised how much "bump" was still there for a couple of weeks after the birth, before that eased back in, quite apart from losing the extra pounds I had gained. So I was still wearing a number of those clothes for most of the spring as well - I probably used them about 9 months fairly constantly in the end.

Samanabanana · 14/09/2021 10:12

It will depend on your bump! I am normally a 12 but quite short and grow giant babies, and so my bump is massive Grin

I couldn't get away with just sizing up, all my clothes had to be proper maternity clothes and now I'm at the end of this pregnancy, even these are struggling to go round the bump (everywhere else still fits fine though!). I have 2 x jeans, leggings, dungers, 4 x vests, 4 x short sleeve, 4 x long sleeve tees, 3 x jumpers, 4 x dresses, 2 x smart tops and a jumpsuit. Wore my usual pants but bought 4 x maternity bras as I couldn't get my usual bras around my rib cage! A bit of a capsule wardrobe but got me through work/casual/evenings out, etc. Had to wear maternity clothes from just past 12 weeks so I feel I have had my monies worth from them, and I will no doubt wear much of it post partum while I get back into shape. H&M had a fab selection this year so it doesn't need to be bank breaking either!

RosieLemonade · 14/09/2021 10:17

Thanks lots of food for thought!
Not sure my boss would appreciate me turning up in men's primark t shirts!

@InnPain
Great solution if you don’t care/ it doesn’t matter what you look like at work/ going out for lunch/ dinner etc.

I personally couldn’t turn up to a meeting/ court/ review wearing a baggy mans t-shirt from primark and some ill fitting trousers. I doubt any office job/ customer facing role would be okay with that either. Most work places expect a degree of formality.

That being said, if I’m visiting a service I do/ have always worn a baggy t-shirt and leggings, and it is a joy!

Florencenotflo · 14/09/2021 10:19

Whatever you do get, remember you will still be wearing you maternity clothes for the first few weeks months after birth. Your bump will take a while to go down and maternity leggings and t-shirts are very comfy and practical in the early days.

I went with a decent pair of maternity jeans from M&S, some regular tunic dresses and maternity leggings. I got away with regular clothes in a bigger size sometimes.
