How often do you decorate?

Not a TAAT but inspired by another thread I was just wondering how often people decorated.

We have lived in our house now for 8 years and we've only decorated 2 rooms (and that was because we didn't like them). The whole house had been painted before we moved in so I know it was fresh back then.

People are saying about wear and tear but we don't seem to have much so haven't done anything, just wondered if we're lazy 🤣

About every four to five years.

HungryHippo11 · 14/09/2021 06:55

When people say "redecorate" is that touching up the existing paint or all new colours/decor?

Anyway, we have lived here 7 years. We repainted some rooms when we moved in and have done the rest in the past year or so (lockdown). I'm not fussy about paint so I doubt we will do it again now for a long time.

DiscoDown21 · 14/09/2021 07:07

We moved in 4 years ago: we’ve painted two rooms in lockdown to just freshen them up a bit and repainted the hallway/ landing woodwork. Just had the bathroom refitted.

We focused on the jobs to be fixed first. Like pointing, roof/chimney minor work, garden, driveway etc. Not sure how often we will redecorate but I can’t imagine it would be regularly!

Fresh wallpaper and paintwork.
We get decorators in because I am bloody useless at this kind of thing!

likeacandleinthewind · 14/09/2021 07:27

I moved here four years ago and did the whole house. The hall stairs and landing has been trashed by school bags and I’ll do it again next year. Kitchen the year afterwards, but receptions/low traffic areas won’t be done again for a long time.

likeacandleinthewind · 14/09/2021 07:28

Whole lot here not touching up. Decorators too, it’s too big a job for me and I wouldn’t do it properly anyway.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 14/09/2021 12:57

About once every 5 years, but one room at a time. DH is an ex-decorator, so I just leave him to it.

ItsSunnyOutside · 14/09/2021 13:40

We renovated our home less then 3 years ago so we haven't felt the need to do anything yet except retouch a few parts of the walls which are predominitely white. During lockdown last year, we did put some fancy wallpaper up in the downstairs loo and a couple of shelves, but that was about it!

I can't see us ever changing the kitchen space as we love it so much and it feels timeless, but we might redo the bedrooms in 2/3 years time. I think our dd will want to pick her own colours by then!

TeenMinusTests · 14/09/2021 13:44

We bought a new build 25 years ago.
In the first 5 years we redecorated throughout to change magnolia to various other colours.
Apart from that, the DC's rooms were done when they came.
Nothing else, not even a new kitchen.

Outside was done a few times before we replaced wood with UPVC.

Lazypuppy · 14/09/2021 13:52

We redo 1 room a year so its never a huge job

MinnieMountain · 14/09/2021 13:54

When it needs it as it’s got too scruffy.

We also had the previous owners’ statement wallpaper removed after 3 years.

PersonaNonGarter · 14/09/2021 13:57

This is such an unspoken class issue. The posh revolve for generations before rehanging pictures.

BasinHaircut · 14/09/2021 13:59

We moved in here 6 years ago and the only thing that has been done more than once is our bedroom, because the first time was a make do bodge job.

A lot of rooms haven’t been completely redecorated at all. For example DS’s room was re-carpeted at the same time as the rest of the upstairs, but I only painted the walls earlier this year. The woodwork has never been done and the radiator needs replacing at some stage but we are considering a loft conversion in the next couple of years and so at that point we will probably start refreshing most rooms one after the other.

I’m ur bathroom is in dire need of complete renovation but we are waiting till after the loft has been done as we don’t have a second bathroom/toilet at the moment so it’s tricky.

TotallyKerplunked · 14/09/2021 14:03

I generally pick a room to do every year or so which means each room gets done every 8 years. That's paint/paper and flooring, with pets and kids it needs doing.

Deadringer · 14/09/2021 14:08

Probably about every 10 years, even longer for some of the bedrooms. Not posh, just skint, and lazy.

DuesToTheDirt · 14/09/2021 14:12

We did the whole house after moving in, with the last rooms finished about 20 years ago. Since then we have not redecorated the bedrooms, boxroom or hall; living room and spare room once; kitchen twice; toilet and bathroom twice; dining room twice.

No incentive to do it any more often!

TheRabbitStoleMyHat · 14/09/2021 14:15

We did the whole house when we moved in 6 years ago and have done one room since. I want to the living room now though.

TheBraveLittleTailor · 14/09/2021 14:30

When I bought a flat there were (more or less unenforceable) stipulations in the leasehold that everything should be painted every seven years ‘in a workmanlike way’ I think the phrase was. I stuck to that except for the kitchen.
Our current house definitely needs doing after 10 years for almost everywhere.
I believe the aristocracy say wash or paint every 15 years, so call us aspirational.

PorkPieForStarters · 14/09/2021 15:18

Oh gosh, I'm forever changing the colours of my walls!

The house had to be completely replastered (unexpectedly) three years ago when I bought it so I had to make some really quick colour decisions and since then there have been a few rooms I've repainted a few times - I guess it's because I've settling into it and deciding what I actually want.

I do it myself so it only costs me a tub of paint, I just like a change of scenery every now and then!

MistySkiesAfterRain · 14/09/2021 15:23

Places like residential homes tend to have rolling programmes of repainting every 5 years so thats pretty reasonable/average for a high use home.

Haha I'm like the aristocracy (in my approach to painting).

Bloodybridget · 14/09/2021 15:28

It really depends on the room. Might be ten years since the dining room was painted. Come to think of it, the living room is pretty ancient too - DP and I painted the walls in a rush because we had someone coming to fit bookshelves; we didn't do the woodwork.

PattyPan · 14/09/2021 15:56

We moved into our house 2 years ago and have painted 3 rooms and want to do the rest over the next year or so. When we moved in the whole house was white which was a bit dull so we are only going to keep the living room white, but that one does have a lot of scuffs on the walls (DP’s bike when we first moved in and didn’t have bike storage!) so still needs redoing even if it says the same shade.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 14/09/2021 15:58

We did a big renovation 2012-2016. Most of the rooms haven’t been done since, we chose good quality fixtures/fittings and so the expensive stuff has held up well but the paintwork is probably due a re-do.

emmathedilemma · 14/09/2021 16:01

I haven’t done my lounge, stairs and main bedroom since I moved in 13 years ago!! Admittedly a coat of paint wouldn’t go amiss now but they’re not terrible. The spare room was only done last year so that lasted 12 years and en-suite probably made it to 10 years.

holidaynearlyover · 14/09/2021 19:16

Really interesting.

We really are procrastinators and just never get round to it!! I have always hated how our bedroom looks but just never crack on and change it! We never seem to have time so save for decorators too which I think is part of the problem!

I plan to try and crack on and change the rooms I dislike, after 8 years I think it is time 🤣
