For 3 bed end terrace. 2 adults and 2 kids! We are with SSE and out electric £162 and gas £80. I've tried looking at others on u switch but apparently this is one of the cheaper one only saving £10 with some others. Why is it so expensive 😭

Price isn't the best way for people to compare - how many kwh are you using? It sounds like you must be using far above average if you're struggling to find a cheaper tariff?

InDubiousBattle · 13/09/2021 17:09

Is that from actual meter readings op? We have a three bed end terrace with a basement office and a heat sucking (in winter)conservatory and we pay £92 per month with Bulb.

Elieza · 13/09/2021 17:09

Is it a pay as you go meter or contract?

Was it set high to pay off debt a d if so has it been returned to normal levels?

Could it be that somethings not right with the meter? Unplug everything and see how much juice it uses just to run the fridge. Then plug stuff in one by one and see what makes it jump up. Or unplug everything overnight and see what it runs up.

switch to octopus...the cheapest right now...i just did a 3 year fix with them....sse are expensive as are bulb...immersion heaters etc suck loads of power...anything that heats...flooring etc...you need to say what you have that might affect the bills.

Elieza · 13/09/2021 17:12

PS you need to compare your actual price per unit times the number of units used to compare.

The other comparisons arent worth the paper they are written on. Ive also had comparisons that I selected my current tariff from a drop down and they compared it against their tariffs. Only the unit prices were wrong! So trust only info you work out based on usage and price per unit.

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 17:14

Look at your usage rather than monthly amount
I'm in a 4 bed detached in Scotland and my usage per year is;

5921 kWh electricity (considered a high user)
14988 kWh gas

I'm also with Octopus, maybe not the cheapest tariff but they have good customer service and an easy to use website/app

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 17:16

P.s. at the moment we spend around £80 on electricity per month and the gas varies by time of year as we have gas central heating (last month we used about £20 gas)

MiloAndEddie · 13/09/2021 17:21

That can’t be right, seriously!

We’re a 3 bed mid terrace, 2 adults, 2 kids, 1 of us working from home occasionally, otherwise the house is empty all day, ours is £90 a month.

How are you using £80 of gas?! Have you got the heating on 24/7? Also check you’re bloody immersion heater isn’t on because that bastard eats money

SaturdaySpread · 13/09/2021 17:23

Is that your current usage or are you paying back previously underestimated bills?

It does seem a lot, I pay £128pm for a four bed detached with 2 young adults who have long showers and very high device usage. I don't think we're an energy efficient household at all.

Meltinthemiddle · 13/09/2021 17:38

We have gas central heating. We don't have a smart meter installation was cancelled due to covid. We literally moved in before first lockdown from a 2 bed to 3 bed. Dh also working from home.

Do you have your heating on all year? What’s your thermostat set at? Do you use a tumble dryer a lot?
It sounds high to me. We have a LOT of devices and other people in this family use two or more at a time (and leave all the lights on) and we still only spend £120/month for both.

Is your heating on all day? What temperature is your thermostat set at?

Mine is on a timer and controlled by a thermostat
I dont have a smart meter either but give monthly meter readings and my usage is shown straight away online

Do you use a tumble dryer? Have underfloor heating?

CornishTiger · 13/09/2021 17:43

Do you have an immersion switch left on in your airing cupboard?

What’s your hot water set up?

Need to know your unit consumption like other posters have said.

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 17:45

Have you checked your bill for your actual usage in kWh?

CornishTiger · 13/09/2021 17:45

Are you billed or pay as you go top up meters

Marni83 · 13/09/2021 17:45

Is that what you DD is set up as?

CornishTiger · 13/09/2021 17:46

We are a large family. Lots of Devices. Both work from home. £106 a month

Ivy48 · 13/09/2021 17:48

3 bed terrace, I WFH and ours is £95 a month for both. That’s seems a lot. Also with SSE

JeffGoldblumsGlasses · 13/09/2021 17:52

I think I'd cry in your position OP. Something has to be wrong. Do you have your heating on constantly? Also are you leaving lights on or running Blackpool tower or something.

I live in a 2 bed semi, I WFH. And my electric is £30pm and gas at the moment is like £20. There's only me and DS. We shower daily, but I refuse to put the central heating on and slippers, thick PJ's and a dressing gown must be worn before I'll consider it 😂

Mindymomo · 13/09/2021 17:55

We have a 3 bed semi, I pay £131 per month with Bulb. They say it’s going up next month. It’s been on tv today that prices are going up and the best way is to fix it at the moment. I have a smart meter and pay by DD. DH and I are home all day, so washing machine is on everyday, tv on most of the day, kettle on 5/6 times. 2 adult sons, each have tv’s, laptops, etc.,

BarbaraofSeville · 13/09/2021 17:56

Your gas isn't too bad, but your electricity is huge. National average is around half what you're using.

Do you have any electrical sources of heat (immersion heater, electric shower, any electric heating?). Do you use the dryer a lot? Anything like hot tubs, fish tanks, cannabis or bitcoin farms?

But yes, like others have said, you need to check your units as the monthly price doesn't always tell the whole story.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 13/09/2021 17:57

My bill from SSE has almost doubled this year, will be shopping around to get it cheaper from somewhere else

dementedpixie · 13/09/2021 17:58

Has your actual bill doubled or are they trying to increase your direct debit?

HalzTangz · 13/09/2021 18:01

On a typical day what is being used in the house, ie, is a TV/s on all day, phones/tablets plugged in charging, gaming machines, tumble dryers etc. Is your heating on, or a timer set for a few hours to heat up water.

We are 3 adults end house, 2 WFH full time, one out at work. We use 90 a month for both gas and electric.
We have washer and dryer going all weekend. A timer set to heat water up once a day. Daily showers for all three. Laptop X2 running 8-10 hours day. 3 phones plugged in and charging whilst in use. Fish tank using electric 24/7. Gas cooker.
Heating doesn't go on til it's Baltic

We need to know what you are using and for how long to see if your electric is being over charged

Blueskythinking123 · 13/09/2021 18:03

I did a few loads of washing yesterday, which I had to tumble dry (DD had piled washing and it needed to be done to take to uni). I also had a load of ironing. I could not believe how much my smart metre went up. In one day it was about £4. So if using tumblr dryer regularly/daily, it would be expensive. However o still don't think it would be what you're spending. When my DS was big into gaming that pushed up my electricity bill.
