Would you eat this yoghurt?

It's unopened in the fridge.
A protein yoghurt with a date of 6th Sept on it.
Would you?

Yes, yogurt keeps for weeks after the use by. Have often eaten a forgotten kids yogurt a month past sell by.

You can tell instantly if it’s ok or not.

SpeckledlyHen · 13/09/2021 13:36

@PosiePerkinPootleFlump

Taste a bit. If it tastes fizzy, no. Otherwise yes.
Absolutely - was going to say the same, if it's fizzy then nope
bananapumpkin · 13/09/2021 13:37

You really don't need to be obsessive about meat and fish, either, as long as it's been refrigerated since purchase.

Yes. I’ve just eaten one dated August 27th.

Wow! That's impressive Halo

Yes of course I would. I don't waste any food unless it is off.

Yoghurt lasts a lot longer than a week or so. I have eaten it over a month out of date. For breakfast today I had cereal with a fruit yoghurt dated 20th August. It was fine.

Food doesn't know the date and purposely go off

Right you've inspired me. I'm going in!!

Agree, they go fizzy, as does sour cream and chive dip FYI. Would definitely try it

eurochick · 13/09/2021 13:51

You need to sniff it and see. I opened one last week on its use by date so it should have been fine but I could see a few little bubbles so I wasn't convinced and tipped it out. As I poured it away I could see huge blobs of blue mould on the side of the pot. 🤮

Bluesheep8 · 13/09/2021 13:54

I'll report back

OP posts:
mydogisthebest · 13/09/2021 14:02

I am sure it will be fine. Just use your nose and eyes and, of course, common sense

loopylindi · 13/09/2021 14:06

what year?? seriously though it will be fine. I've eaten yoghurt that was (unopened) up to 6months after its date. As long as it's not domed or fizzy you'll be OK

StopCryingYourHeartOut · 13/09/2021 14:21

I often eat unopened yoghurt up to a few weeks past use by date and they've always been completely fine.

PlanetTeaTime · 13/09/2021 14:43

More than likely unless it smelled off

FinallyHere · 13/09/2021 14:50

If you look and sniff, you will soon notice whether it is good to eat (or not).

I can't imagine throwing something out without checking the look and smell, rather than an arbitrarily assigned date. It's always obvious, no great consideration required.

emwithme · 13/09/2021 15:04

Is it blown/sucked in?
When you take the lid off, does it look normal - not excessive wheying off (liquid at the top)?
Any visible mould?

If the answer is no, yes, no then my husband (QC for major yoghurt manufacturer) says go ahead.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/09/2021 15:13

Yes if it looks OK - lid not blown and looks normal on opening.

In my experience yogurt, cream and cream and cottage cheese lasts at least a couple of weeks past the date, even if opened.

EggAndHasBeans · 13/09/2021 15:24

You will know if it's gone off.

Brilliant - thank you for asking him

@ThreeKneeRepeater

Yes. I’ve just eaten one dated August 27th.
What year? 😂

If it’s not been opened and the packaging hasn’t swollen it’s fine. Off yoghurt can’t be mistaken - it tastes fizzy and you won’t make that mistake twice!

Bluesheep8 · 13/09/2021 15:29

Change of plan due to work means I can't eat it til tonight now, though

Does that mean he knows how I can make my hone made yoghurt taste tart?
Divebar2021 · 13/09/2021 15:46

All yoghurt is protein yoghurt!!!! Yes I would eat it.

Purplewithred · 13/09/2021 15:49

Unless it was visibly mouldy yes I'd definitely eat it. DH would eat it with a little visible mould if he fancied it.

Glad to hear QC for yogurt manufacturer agrees.

Threewheeler1 · 13/09/2021 15:51

Yep, if the lid hasn't blown (bulging slightly)
But then I am the woman who only last week ate a packet of quavers (that I found in the 'crisp' section of the cupboard) and they were a bit chewy...went out of date in June 2019. I am a regular 'eat by' date ignorer and I'm still here Grin
