How do you pronounce ‘iron’?

Off the back of the ‘do school shirts need ironing’ thread, I’m now musing about how weird it is that I don’t say the ‘r’ in iron. So it sounds like I-on in my (southern English) accent. If you have a rhotic accent eg Scottish and pronounce your ‘r’s in all words, how do you say iron?!

Sort of like 'i-yearn'.

My Scottish friend at school (on the south coast) used to pronounce it “I Ron”, we had lots of discussions on accents etc.

Anoisagusaris · 12/09/2021 20:19

Kinda like ire’n I suppose. Definite strong r in there (Irish accent).

BusySittingDown · 12/09/2021 20:20

I say it like eye-on, don't know if I'm right though.

X posted with everybody. Yes, I say it the same as most posters!

ReeseWitherfork · 12/09/2021 20:21

I actually can't pronounce "iron". Or "Ireland" for that matter. Also southern English. It comes out a bit like a two syllable "ARN". My husband (with the same accent) likes to mock. Luckily I haven't done any arning in years.

dylanthedragon · 12/09/2021 20:22

I think phonetically it would be 'i-urrn'. I have a glaswegian accent.

Is anyone else now sounding it out to themselves and it sounds weirder each time you do it? 🤣. So seems like apart from the Irish pp, for most people the ‘r’ is pronounced in the second syllable towards the end of the word and the ‘i’ is on its own. Wonder why?!

Eye-yun for me here in Yorkshire

wheresmyshoe · 12/09/2021 20:29

Ire-n emphasis on the ire the nnnn just flows from it, so one syllable not two.

museumum · 12/09/2021 20:30

Eye-Urn for the thing you do to laundry.
But weirdly the metal id say eye-rin
