If you’ve had any experience on the Mirena coil what is your opinion on it?

Tomorrow, I am booked in for my 3rd hysteroscopy in 5 years to remove reoccurring uterine polyps.
Annoyingly (and because at 48 I am probably perimenopausal), they keep growing back.
They have said they will put a Mirena in at the same time as the hysteroscopy but I am still in two minds because of the hit and miss personal accounts of it online (some seem horrific).
However, I can no longer continue suffering from such heavy periods as I am now very, very anaemic and that in itself is far from fun.
I am quite concerned with the pressure the NHS is currently under that if it does not agree with me I will have trouble getting it removed.
I also already suffer from aura migraines (hormonally triggered), digestive issues and anxiety/depression and have read it can exacerbate all of these issues?

Hell.
I hated it and bled every day that I had it in, friend never had periods with hers. I also put over 2 stone on in a very short space of time and did have more migraines. It was a struggle to have it removed but, once gone, my weight went down to previous level.

GuyFawkesDay · 12/09/2021 10:40

On my second. Best thing ever.

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/09/2021 10:40

Mine was brilliant. Stopped mood swings and heavy bleeding. Waiting for an op to remove mine and put a new One in (mine can't be taken out as it's grown in to the wall)

I bled for six months when I first had mine fitted. Fitting and removal were very painful. When it settled down it was wonderful and I didn’t ever bleed again. I have visual migraines and it did not worsen mine. I’m post menopausal now and no longer have one. I would definitely give it a go, if you get on with it, it’s fantastic.

MuchasSmoochas · 12/09/2021 10:45

Third is one. Life changing , I haven’t had a period in 13 years. Very sore insertion/changing but well worth the pain.

MuchasSmoochas · 12/09/2021 10:45

Third one!!

Champagneforeveryone · 12/09/2021 10:46

Mines great, not as great as my first but I am peri menopausal so not really a surprise.

Not fun to have fitted and I bled lightly for the the best part of three months initially. Now have no periods, which is worth all the short term hassle!

JacquelineCarlyle · 12/09/2021 10:49

I'm about to get my third one fitted next week - love it. Absolutely amazing. I don't really get periods on it and never had the bleeding that others describe. I've also not had any issues when I've had it inserted (or removed and a new one inserted). I have had 3 DCs vaginally so don't know if that's made it easier but I'm hoping that getting the new one next week will be as pain free too!

Mercedes519 · 12/09/2021 10:51

I have hormonal issues which made me have horrendous periods. On my third mirena. Occasional light spotting. No pain. No hormone swings as it’s localised compared to taking hormone orally

Mrsfenchurch · 12/09/2021 10:51

Love mine. 3 years in and no periods since about month 2! Little painful (for a minute or two) going in, but 100% worth it. In my experience chatting with friends 95% is positive - all with massively lighter or no periods.

CRbear · 12/09/2021 10:52

Love mine. No migraines (hormonal) since I had it put in (something about the dose being much lower than the pill). Not had a period on it. Worst part is insertion and you’d be under for that!

Doggiedementia · 12/09/2021 10:52

I hated it. Had it in for 3 years. Never stopped bleeding and horrendous weight gain.

Stri · 12/09/2021 10:53

Hate mine. I had another thread recently about it - I’ve had mine in well over a year now and still periods haven’t settled, I’ve got health anxiety so the unpredictable bleeding triggers that. I’m going to ask for it to be removed ASAP.

Empressofthemundane · 12/09/2021 10:54

I had the Mirena coil inserted for heavy periods.
2 years later, I still have heavy periods like clock work. I also gained 5 kilos. (Don’t know if it is a direct result or not.)
It was very painful to insert. I went into shock.

Doggiedementia · 12/09/2021 10:54

And entry and removal was v painful

WreckTangled · 12/09/2021 10:55

Bled for six weeks then regular periods until I got pregnant. It was still in place, they removed it when I was 7 weeks pregnant.

Rainbowshit · 12/09/2021 10:56

Love mine. Wish I'd got it years ago. Was put off by others experiences so had two copper coils. Mirena is so much better.

Iwantcollarbones · 12/09/2021 10:56

The only problem I’ve had with my mirena is arranging to have it changed. I’ve loved my first one. I went from bleeding continuously for 15 months to barely any periods the past 5 years. Booked in to have it replaced in a couple of weeks (after a right faff).

onlymyselftoanswerto1 · 12/09/2021 10:58

Hated mine. Was excruciating getting it inserted and I've a high pain threshold. Bled for 6 months, including flooding if I was standing for too long for example in a queue - so embarrassing and I had to leave places quite frequently because of it. Made my mood very low too, I turned into a horrible snappy person. Ended up removing it myself as nobody would take me seriously and help me, (wouldn't recommend this but I was desperate) scary how quickly my body and moods returned to normal tho. Never again!

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 12/09/2021 11:01

Mine is great. Not too bad at fitting and my periods dwindled to 12 hours every 2-3 months. So much better than before.

Passmeamenuatthetottenham · 12/09/2021 11:01

I bled constantly for weeks after having it put in, but when it did settle down, I basically had a very light period every month. The first few months I had it I was like an angry dragon a lot of the time, my hair and skin was really greasy and I was quite spotty, but again it did all settle down after a few months.

PurpleEchoLamp · 12/09/2021 11:02

Mine fell out!

itsgettingwierd · 12/09/2021 11:03

I have a hysteroscopy booked for October after years of heavy periods.

I was told I had to try coil first (basically) and first came out after months of heavy bleeding and second did the same. My experience was of months and months of misery.

I'm now on northisterone daily to stop any bleeding. I was bleeding 14/25 days and so heavy I'd flood a tampon, maternity pad and tena pants in 20 minutes.

Have you thought about an ablation? Would that work for your condition?

Mine is ds as endo but it's very probable I have adenomyosis too.

tortoiselover100 · 12/09/2021 11:04

Best thing I ever had, no periods, no pms, totally forget it's there, had it about 15 years now except when I had it removed when I was ttc.

MackenCheese · 12/09/2021 11:05

Disastrous! 2 weeks after I got a pelvic infection and septicaemia. Needed a hysterectomy (I had fibroid anyway), spent 4 weeks in hospital and a further 4 weeks of iv antibiotics through a central line. Not for me, I'm afraid.
