If you’ve had any experience on the Mirena coil what is your opinion on it?

Tomorrow, I am booked in for my 3rd hysteroscopy in 5 years to remove reoccurring uterine polyps.
Annoyingly (and because at 48 I am probably perimenopausal), they keep growing back.
They have said they will put a Mirena in at the same time as the hysteroscopy but I am still in two minds because of the hit and miss personal accounts of it online (some seem horrific).
However, I can no longer continue suffering from such heavy periods as I am now very, very anaemic and that in itself is far from fun.
I am quite concerned with the pressure the NHS is currently under that if it does not agree with me I will have trouble getting it removed.
I also already suffer from aura migraines (hormonally triggered), digestive issues and anxiety/depression and have read it can exacerbate all of these issues?

Life changing for me. No more flooding periods, and my mood is much less swingy. Anaemia has abated. I've had it in for about two years and other than about 8 weeks of very light bleeding (like the remnants at the end of a period), I've had none since.

I keep finding stashes of massive tampons and pads, which I had to carry everywhere with me before. So glad to be past all that.

Good luck with it.

Now on my 3rd & final Mirena, this one will take me through the menopause. Great not having periods.

I loved mine, no migraines, no pmt, no periods .... which made it tricky to date the pregnancy! It slipped into my cervix (probably during a smear) and dd2 is now 17!

Best thing ever.

Ellarain · 14/09/2021 15:51

Got my first mirena in April 2021 for heavy periods. I hate it. Weight gain, constant bloating, sore breasts, back pain, fatigue, hormonal... The list goes on. The only positive is no period.

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 14/09/2021 15:58

On my second (or possibly third) and unless anything changes, I will be getting another. Personally the pain of insertion was minimal and I love not having periods. Appreciate that this isn’t the case for all.

Bananas52 · 14/09/2021 16:11

Loved it. Was previously bleeding very heavily. It eventually stopped my periods. Only had it removed because of TTC.

Starrr123 · 18/03/2022 21:44

@Daisydolly1986 hey! How are you now? Im getting migraines that i dint normally get x

3beesinmybonnet · 18/03/2022 22:31

I've had 2. Replaced my awful heavy periods with a couple of days backache every 6 months. Insertion and removal not painful though not pleasant either. Well worth it IMO. Now post meno and been told I should have the last one out - it's probably swum up to my left armpit by now!
I would definitely recommend it though.

Horrific experience here. Horrendous pain (and that’s coming from someone with endometriosis), depression, no sex drive, total personality change. It was like being taken over by someone else, my marriage nearly broke down as I was awful. I never made the connection for months and when I went to get it removed (which was also incredibly painful) within a week it was like The normal me was back again.

Starrr123 · 19/04/2022 08:30

@Daisydolly1986 how are your migraines now ? Im having visual migraines with it so may get it out. Had it in for only 2 months x

flipflopping · 19/04/2022 08:41

Disaster for me- incredibly painful to put in (worse than childbirth), I could then feel it the whole time it was there, which was extremely uncomfortable and at times breathtakingly painful. Periods carried on as normal. Eventually must have expelled it as the pain stopped but as I didn't find it, I had to have an internal scan and an X ray. Never again.

Workinghardeveryday · 19/04/2022 08:51

Hated it. VERY painful to put in, worse than labour pains.

Changed me as a person, moody, depressed. Was like being due on permanently.

Bleed most days for a year until I got the stupid thing taken out. Back to normal a week later and the normal me.

Milomonster · 19/04/2022 10:07

Love it. I had fibroids and endo removed a year ago due to horrific pain and bleeding. Gynae insisted he insert a Mirena after surgery to prevent uterine walls from collapsing, and said he’d remove it after a month. I was against it as I didn’t want anything fucking with my hormones. I have to say it’s been amazing. No PMT (no longer get wild mood swings, cravings, zits, pain), and bleeding is just spotting. No negative side effects.

SoManyTshirts · 19/04/2022 10:23

Loved it. It stopped my periods completely and I never had to think about contraception, no risk of failure.

Stopped using at menopause.

piemaggedon · 12/05/2022 12:51

Love it, no periods for years

herecomesyour19thnervousbreakdown · 12/05/2022 12:55

I didn't have migraines before the coil
They aren't that often but are debilitating
Dp and I don't want more children so we condom and coil belt and braces
I like not having periods

museumum · 12/05/2022 12:55

Excellent for me. I’m on my second and will probably reach menopause by the time it’s due out.

evtheria · 12/05/2022 12:57

On my 2nd: love that I don't have periods anymore, just a monthly slight ache/tenderness. Hate the fitting, but it could be worse. I can't tell if it has an effect on my moods, as I've always been quite a grumpy person anyway.

LadyHelenaJustina · 12/05/2022 15:12

I've had two. Best thing I ever did.
