Don't have an interest particularly in tennis but very proud of a fellow woman, fellow person from Bromley and someone who braved it through such spotlight type stresses -
Brilliant win Emma 🥳🥂

What spoiling of a thread that should have been positive and celebratory.

I thought she was incredible. She is British, she grunts. She is a world champion at 18.

Mamette · 12/09/2021 08:47

She plays for her country and you should all be very proud of her. Fantastic player and so composed and eloquent when speaking! They both were. Two inspirational young women.

Saintsofsaint · 12/09/2021 08:47

@embolass

Born in Canada, daughter of a Romanian father and Chinese mother. Not British. If she arrived aged 2 on a dingy on a beach would we claiming her at that point in her life?
I understand your point about the way refugees/migrants are treated - and the inequalities.

But, she's British. She's proud of all her heritage but she's British. Her own words/choice. By saying she's not you're as bad as those that want to turn boats around.

Well, if she's happy enough to be described as British and if her family has citizenship then what are you on about with the "claiming" nonsense?

pastaparadise · 12/09/2021 08:52

embollas I hope your comments are there to highlight that we should be welcoming any children washed up on our shores, both morally and as you never know what potential they have.

Thought she showed amazing composure. I hated even talking in front of my class at 18, yet alone in front of 1000s/ TV audience etc. Amazing role model

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/09/2021 08:53

Not only is she British she has also said how other British tennis players have inspired her. What is wrong with some posters on this thread?

Fantastic achievement at such a young age. She played with great maturity.

I would, if she became a citizen. But then I'm not a twat.

Completely inappropriate. The situations are not even in the same category - her parents came he not as economic migrants, but expats. They would have been welcomed by the normal legal channels and both work in the financial sector. They have obtained citizenship also under the normal route and she considers herself British.

Stop making everything an excuse to brandish a placard.

JuneOsborne · 12/09/2021 09:02

How amazing. Neither her mum or dad could be there.

She was a qualifier, played 10 matches, didn't drop a single set throughout. Played a week longer than the others and won. Something a qualifier has never, ever done. Her only previous experience of a senior grand slam was Wimbledon and she had a medical episode that saw her retire in the 4th round (having got there as a wild card).

She sat her a levels 3 months ago and got an A and an A*. She is one extraordinary woman.

I can't wait to see more of her.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/09/2021 09:17

Does anyone know why her parents weren't there? Seems strange.

I just assumed it was because you can't travel from the UK to to USA at the moment so they would have had to go via another country for two weeks, which is what I assume Emma and her team and every other British person there did, but maybe there are exceptions if you are going for work?
Whattheflecker · 12/09/2021 09:26

They weren't given a visa.

ssd · 12/09/2021 09:26

Shes brilliant

So much for our special relationship with the US ....
CormoranStrike · 12/09/2021 10:11

@SuperbLyrebird

They were both so graceful. I stopped watching tennis when the women started grunting like the men.
Hmm
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/09/2021 10:14

That's so sad, very mean spirited of the US. I bet they have exceptions when it suits them.
HermioneWeasley · 12/09/2021 10:15

She’s amazing and inspirational.

I just keep thinking “thank heavens a mediocre male didn’t fancy winning the women’s open this year.”. I fear for the role models who we’ll never see.

LaCerbiatta · 12/09/2021 10:16

I arrived in the UK when I was 24 and now have a British passport and could compete for GB or UK if I wanted (or had any talent! 😉)

BertiesShoes · 12/09/2021 10:36

Re the visa, Emma herself said they needed a special visa which would take a week, so maybe they didn’t try….but surely BoJo and Biden could have got them there?

As someone else saint, so much for that special relationship!!

awaynboilyurheid · 12/09/2021 10:42

Wasn’t that impressed by the Canadian opponent moaning on about Emma needing her leg treated, which it clearly is in the rules as it was bleeding.
However so glad Emma won was a fantastic match.

crumpet · 12/09/2021 11:14

I was born outside the UK. My dad is South African. Didn’t move here til I was 6. I am British.

We moved when I was two I only feel more dual nationality because I can’t back at twenty

If I stayed in a Aus and people kept going on about other nationalities it would annoy me. More so if it was due to a perceived difference

MarshaBradyo · 12/09/2021 11:23

Whoops I thought it was the worried for her thread

Probably not as relevant

Agreed. Laylah was unsporting. Her smirks did not go unnoticed either!
