Where were you on 9/11?

I was 16 and at college, having a rip roaring time in the student union bar with my fake ID.

Noticed a few people gathered round a small TV after the first plane hit. The union ended up pulling down the projector screen usually reserved for football, just as the second plane hit. We sat there for hours and hours just watching and not believing what we were seeing.

Can't believe it's been 20 years.

I was in bed with then boyfriend. His mum came and got us. I was 18

I admit I didn’t really get the gravity of the situation until I saw the news as I didn’t know what the trade centre actually was.

I went to work later on in the day, I worked in accessorize in a shopping centre. It was dead and the few people about were all standing in front of the TVs in Dixon’s windows.

I was coming home from college about to do my driving test when the first plane crashed.
Remember doing the pre test driving lesson and the instructor put the radio on and heard that they had both been attacked and then knowing it wasn't an accident. I drove terribly but still managed to pass my test.

I Remember going to the pub after passing said driving test and just watching the tv, and it feeling like a disaster movie!

LoveFall · 10/09/2021 22:08

I got in my car to go to work, turned the radio on and heard it. On my way to work the second tower was hit. It was quite early morning in Vancouver.

It seemed like hundreds of planes landed at YVR as they could not go into US airspace. Then the skies went quiet for days. It was surreal.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 10/09/2021 22:17

I was working part time in my dads diy shop. I finished at 1 pm. Just before I went home, my bosses business partner came in and told me. I then went home and watched the news. Ds1 was 4 and ds2 wasn't even a twinkle in my eye.

MissCalamity · 10/09/2021 22:25

Aged 22, working in an office. The news started filtering round and a few of us where stood in the MD's office with the TV on. Just utter shock and disbelief.

DoreenWinkings · 10/09/2021 22:27

In Florida.
We'd flown in the evening before. We were picking up driving licences at the DMV and they turned the television on. It was awful.
Afterwards spent hours trying to get hold of a relative who worked in the Pentagon. Thankfully he was OK but it was a scary time.

Habbyhadno · 10/09/2021 22:37

I was in Stevenage shopping with my mum. We walked past a TV rental shop and it was showing on all the screens. I said 'what a stupid pilot, flying into a skyscraper.' Mum said 'that's where me and your sister went to the top of last week when we were in New York' Then we got home and said 'shall we put the news on to see what's going on with that plane?' and literally saw the second plane crash into the building seconds later, then was glued to the news all day.

OverByYer · 10/09/2021 22:40

I was taking a statement from someone in their house. We started to write it and the guy looked up at the tv which had the sound off.
‘ Do you mind ?’ He said , pointing at the TV.
We sat watching together for about 1 -2 hrs in shock/ silence
I had to go back another day to get his statement.

Ibwas working at Charing Cross Underground station. Back tben the Standard was sold outside the railway station upstairs. The first I knew about it was a message going out to all stations with with a helpline phone number for anyone worried about a loved one in NYC. Then the Stsndard West End Final came out and I saw the picture of the Twin Towers on fire on the front page as commuters carried them home. I finished work late that night, so I didn't see any footage until I got home. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

FatAnkles · 10/09/2021 22:55

*I was

FatAnkles · 10/09/2021 22:55

Fat fingers. Sorry for the typos

TheChosenTwo · 10/09/2021 22:56

Just got home from college roundabout midday. Was meant to be going out to the pub that night for a new friends birthday.
Sat down to watch neighbours and eat some lunch and was really annoyed that it was on the news still.
Flicked the channels over a few times but everything was showing the same thing.
Sat and watched the second plane hit and then both towers subsequently fall.
Gobsmacked. It was terrifying to watch, utterly gutwrenching.

gogohm · 10/09/2021 22:59

In bed (living on west coast of America) woke up to my radio alarm clock as usual and it had just happened, they still didn't realise it was deliberate, turned on tv just as second plane hit

Chotuladoo · 10/09/2021 23:04

On the bus home from school, the driver wouldn't let us put radio one on - he was listening to the news (we didn't know what was happening). The reports weren't clear at the time as it was still happening. Ran home put on BBC 1 and saw the news, before my folks or siblings were around. I remember every minute so clearly.

popcornfrenzy · 10/09/2021 23:05

I was sat in the canteen at my army barracks in Germany and it was on the news. We all thought it was a film which was strange as they never put films on in the cookhouse.

When we all realised what was happening our camp got locked down and we thought we were going to war that evening, little did we realise that that war would come 18 months later

Dave20 · 10/09/2021 23:08

It just seems so unreal to me that the terrorists carried out these attacks on such a scale.Four of them on each plane. Even before 9/11, I thought airport security was still strict. I think of those on board the world trade centre planes knew what was coming, they would have fought back..

JustStartingOut1 · 10/09/2021 23:09

I was 7 and just remember it being on the tv when coming home from school. I didn't really understand what was happening but knew it was bad. I still remember the image of one of the towers being on fire.

I read somewhere recently that remembering 9/11 was the cut-off to being a millennial as opposed to Gen Z. Like a generation-defining event or something.

Silkiescatz · 10/09/2021 23:09

I was working for a finance firm in London which had a sister firm in the WTC. In our office there were 4 of us in our part, 2 had just joined us from the NY WTC office that June. I used the internet for my job and saw the first headline on yahoo, this made it sound like a small plane had accidentally crashed and said pilot dead. Then 10 mins or so later headline turned red, had never seen a headline turn red. Then I went off to lunch and came back and it became clear it was no accident and major. I alerted my US colleagues in our office who had not seen. They were obviously very worried, our sister firm all got out but they both had a few friends each who died on higher floors. The younger US guy kept trying to phone their parents but after 3 days of trying he knew his old university friends were dead at 26, all female. Very sad. I was a similar age and every time I do something like marriage, children I feel for them and their parents and what they were cheated of.

Duckypoohs · 10/09/2021 23:11

I was asleep in bed (teenagers eh) when my mum came flying up the stairs shouting "the world is ending" I was pretty Hmm but went downstairs anyway. In hindsight it was a bit of an overreaction, we did sit and watch all day obviously.

Dave20 · 10/09/2021 23:12

There’s lots of documentaries on sky at the moment. Quite hard to watch, particularly the second plane hitting as by then the cameras were on. Theres one in particular called 102 minutes that changed America. And also the children from 911 parents who died. Really sad.
Those brave firefighters probably knew they may not come out again but still did their job.

AlwaysLatte · 10/09/2021 23:13

I was at work in an office and a colleague who was a retired senior detective and therefore pretty tough, was at home alone and phoned in shock to speak to someone. It was the first I'd heard about it.

BeaFlowers · 10/09/2021 23:13

At work. I was 19. A colleague came in visibly upset and said a plane had flown into the twin towers. I had no clue what that meant and went about my day. The enormity didn't sink in till I got home and sat down down to the news.

AlwaysLatte · 10/09/2021 23:14

My sister was in one of the towers the day before.

drpaddington · 10/09/2021 23:15

I was 13. I remember coming home from school to see the footage on repeat on the TV. I was on my own and waiting for my Mum to come home from work. It didn't seem real at the time.

Dave20 · 10/09/2021 23:16

I was in the army too, but on leave that time. Just about to turn 18. Had no idea then how life as we knew it would change..
