Very dull Q. Imperial or metric and how old are you?

I'm 47 and have never got the hang of metric even though I wasn't even born when the UK introduced the metric system (apparently in 1965)

I'm 62 and always think of height and body weight in imperial. However I use metric weights for recipes, and use metric weights and measures for work.

I always use centigrade for temperatures, never fahrenheit.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 09/09/2021 21:52

49 and both. I worked in a diy shop for a while where you could get 8ft x 4ft sheets of 6, 8 and 10mm wood. Any apprentice had to be taught imperial because not everybody understood cms and mms.

Wigeon · 09/09/2021 21:53

Early 40s.

Temperature - always centigrade. Cannot get Fahrenheit at all.

Adult human height/weight: imperial

My children’s height/weight: metric

Long distances: miles

Very short distances (less than 2m): either

Sewing: metric

Recipes: depends, a mix of both

Money: metric Grin

Late 40s. Imperial for long distances and (human) heights and weights.
Metric for short distances and weighing for recipes etc.
I've never ever understood Farenheit.

hiredandsqueak · 09/09/2021 21:57

53, largely imperial but metric when baking. I would though ask for a pound of apples etc so using metric doesn't carry over to food

FreezerBird · 09/09/2021 21:58

I'm 46.

Imperial:
Height
Weight
Driving distances
Walking distances
Some recipes depending on the book they come from
Woodwork

Metric
Children's height
Children's weight
Running distances
Some recipes depending on book
Sewing

Spanglebangle · 09/09/2021 22:03

I'm a mixture same as most people I think.

My height is feet and inches but DC's is cm because that's what is in the red book.

If I follow a recipe it's usually metric unless it's American. But if I make a cake it's 6,4,4 Oz.

GiantKitten · 09/09/2021 22:04

I’m 70 and do a mixture. Metric is great for measuring and weighing things but I can’t generally visualise in my head, apart from things like 15cm/6”

When metric was introduced (I’ve always thought it coincided roughly with decimal currency) there were a couple of doggerel verses which help me to this day Grin

Two and a quarter pounds of jam
Make about a kilogram

And

A litre of water’s a pint and three-quarters

You’re welcome Smile

Siepie · 09/09/2021 22:12

Mid 30s - mainly metric
Miles/kilometres interchangeably
I know my height in both and can roughly imagine 5', 6', etc but prefer metric

I'm English and have spent most of my life here, but did spend a few years in a country which only uses metric and it seems to have stuck

As someone who's awful at maths, everything being in 10s is much easier Grin

careerchangeperhaps · 09/09/2021 22:16

I'm early 40s

Long distance, I prefer miles although I'm a runner so anything under 10km I can understand how far it is without having to mentally convert into miles.

Very short distance (such as measuring a room), either ft or m will do.

Short distance (under a mile), I prefer metric. I'm not sure how long a yard etc is.

Heights of people: Metric for kids (under about 5ft) and ft and inches for adults Grin

Weights for cooking: metric

Weights for people: I prefer stones and lbs. I would have a rough idea if someone is light or heavy if they gave their weight in kg though.

BestIsWest · 09/09/2021 22:19

Both. 58.

DerAlteMann · 09/09/2021 22:22

I'm 65. I can do metric, length, capacity and weights, with no problem but temperature in Celsius as opposed to Fahrenheit totally defeats me. Is 24C hot? No idea.

kowari · 09/09/2021 22:24
  1. I prefer metric but can use imperial and can convert if needed.
Spanglebangle · 09/09/2021 22:25

Temperature in summer is imperial, temperature in winter is metric.

Longdistance · 09/09/2021 22:27

I’m 45. I’m a mix of everything, but wound rather metric as easier. I do height in metres/centimetres. Weight in kilograms. Grams for baking. Cm for measuring.
I can work out pounds and ounces, stones.

Would rather km than miles, but, meh!

Davros · 09/09/2021 22:40

I drink in miles and drive in pints so Imperial Grin

DustyMaiden · 09/09/2021 22:53

Metric apart from my own weight.

Tatapie · 09/09/2021 23:13

Mix too. 49. Even mix in same shop - pound of sausages, kilo of mince!

simitra · 10/09/2021 03:05

Im born in the 1940s and can recall the change to metric so am comfortable with both.

I sell online - mainly to Americans who use imperial. All my items are measured in imperial with metrics afterwards in brackets.

I would not object if we went back to yards and inches now we have dumped the EU.

Porridgealert · 10/09/2021 03:38

I measure room sizes in metric but I have to change it back to feet to imagine how big something is. Same in cms and inches. Its much easier for me to estimate a inch than it is 2.5 cms. And this is why height has to be ft and inches because cms don't mean that much really.

Porridgealert · 10/09/2021 03:40

Out if interest is American and British imperial the same? I thought I read somewhere they're different. But I don't know why they would be.
MusicTeacherSussex · 10/09/2021 03:41

I'm 31 and can quite happily use both, it's not that much of a fuss surely?

BillyJoe111 · 10/09/2021 05:04

imperial for everything, I’m 41.

Kilograms and kilometres can fuck off, I honestly have no idea what they mean. I had my third baby last year and they told me her weight in kg - meant jack shit!

And don’t tell me a room measurement in meters, I can’t visualise it. Tell me in feet and inches and i’ll know exactly what you mean.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 10/09/2021 05:23
  1. Both.

Imperial for sewing and long distances, telling the hairdresser how much you want off and weighing humans.
Metric for cooking, volume, short distances.

JacquelineCarlyle · 10/09/2021 05:32

@SallyOMalley

Imperial for my height, weight and clothing, metric for the kids' height, weight and clothing, metric when cooking, imperial for distance.

😖

Mad, isn't it? (I'm 50 btw).

This is me - I'm 45! Nuts!
