Who has right of way here? (diagram provided as per the rules)

  1. The person coming out of the side street onto the more main road (which isn't really a main road as such, it's the road that goes through a large residential area with cul de sacs going off it)
  1. the person coming out of the cul de sac

And yes, my diagram is total shit Blush

Where is the cul de sac?

Fredoftheforest · 09/09/2021 15:34

The person on the main road has right of way. I don’t think there’s a specific rule for who has right of way between two cars both trying to get on to the main road from side streets. It’s just a case of seeing who waves the other on/who goes first.

Lweji · 09/09/2021 15:35

I don't get it. The cars seem far apart enough so that the first getting onto the main road gets priority

isitjustlockdown · 09/09/2021 15:38

It depends on the road markings etc.

From your diagram I cannot tell where the cul de sac is.

Going by the road marks on your diagram, the car in the upper part has to give way to all cars on the road they are entering, as there are five way lines by the looks of things.

The car on the lower part, has to give way to cars on the same road coming the other direction.

Notapheasantplucker · 09/09/2021 15:38

None

  1. People on the main road
Palavah · 09/09/2021 15:38

I assume the car coming out of the cul de sac is indicating to turn right?

Agree it's whichever car is on the main toad first. If the cul-de-sac car turns right then the other car needs to give way if still begind the give way lines. Otherwise if already over the lines then they come through and cul-de-sac car goes afterwards.

Mintjulia · 09/09/2021 15:38

The person on the main road has priority unless there is traffic light control on the junction.

SirChenjins · 09/09/2021 15:44

Cul de sac is the road on the left hand side towards the top left hand corner of the drawing.

The car sitting tucked in behind the chicane has been coming along the main road. The chicane is there to slow cars down as they come up alongside the park (it doesn't).

Often what happens is the cars coming out of the cul de sac see the car coming up to the chicane and scoot out of the cul de sac to force the car on the 'main road' to have to stop behind the chicane.

In turn, the cars coming up to the chicane will see the cars coming up to the give way lines at cul de sac opening and will scoot past the chicane.

It's then Mexican stand off on the section of the road to the north of the chicane and south of the cul de sac.

We have similar in our village. The chicane is irrelevant, the person already on the main road has right of way over anyone planning to join that road.

BigPyjamas · 09/09/2021 15:59

We have something similar where we live.

Main road has priority and you only pull out of the side road if main road is clear.

If something is waiting at the chicane and you would get in their way, you wait for them to pass first.

SirChenjins · 09/09/2021 16:17

I agree, it should be the car on the main road which has priority - but it's amazing the number of cars that come flying out of the cul de sac to try and force the car on the main road to stay behind the chicane. DH and I witnessed one doing just that last night, there was almost a crash.

We have one of those here. Residents lobbied the council and had STOP sign added to the give way lines. It seems to have reduced the problem, but took forever.

Where do you get the STOP sign added to? I had thought about lobbying the council but knowing our lot they'd add it to both the chicane and the cul de sac and it'd just create an even bigger standoff.

Depends.
Which of you is driving the BMW?

The one who gets there first, of course!

On the issue of the stop sign we have a really dangerous junction locally (crossroads). The only option the council could afford was new signage. They went for a stop sign one way across, and a give way sign the other. Some people were confused by it initially but generally it has led to much more caution and I’m really impressed.

eurochick · 09/09/2021 17:44

Car on main road definitely has ROW. Car in cul de sac is a CF if it pulls out.

SirChenjins · 09/09/2021 17:50

Even if the main road is not really a main road as such, just the main arterial road going through the housing estate? And if there are double dashed lines behind both the chicane and at the exit of the cul de sac?

I agree, I think the car on the 'main road' should have right of way but I've had so many cars pull out from the cul de sac - and seen so many doing it to other drivers - I'm beginning to doubt myself.

Main Road .

TheFlis12345 · 09/09/2021 21:48

It doesn’t matter what type of road, main or otherwise, the person already on that road always has right of way over a person wishing to join it.

TabbyStar · 09/09/2021 21:57

We've got some junctions like this too, it's a pain, although arguably the car from the side road is clear to pull out, it's just that they will need to wait for you to clear the chicane as you'll probably already be progressing through it before they've turned. It's unsatisfactory though.

SirChenjins · 09/09/2021 22:05

I saw it again tonight when I was out collecting DS from footie - car coming along the main road saw the car coming up to the cul de sac junction and pulled out to get out round the chicane before the other one pulled onto the main road, the car coming out of the cul de sac was obviously determined to get onto the main road to force the other car to stop behind the chicane - so they both had a standoff on the main road. It’s crazy Confused

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 10/09/2021 07:10

There's a similar layout near me.
Prioity is always to vehicles on the main road over those joining it, but chichanes can be a right PITA for reading the road as they change peoples' behaviour and make predicting speed harder as some people will slow down as intended and others race through while the coast is clear.

My particular fabourite is another set where some pillock put the chichane on a blind summit in a section of double white line where you shouldn't be overtaking! Add in a layer of parked cars to play at gap dodging and complicate rights of way and I'm stunned there hasn't been a nasty accident there!

Musicalmistress · 10/09/2021 07:29

It doesn't matter whether the chicane is on a 'main' road or a very small side street - the car coming from the cul de sac is joining that so the car already on it, regardless of chicane has right of way

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 10/09/2021 07:37

It’s a poor design. The already car on the main road has right of way. But I can see how cars doing a rolling exit from the cul de sac would see a car stopped at the chicane and realise they had time to pull out, and then assume the right of way themselves. It’s cheeky, it ought to default to car already on main road.
