  1. The person coming out of the side street onto the more main road (which isn't really a main road as such, it's the road that goes through a large residential area with cul de sacs going off it)
  1. the person coming out of the cul de sac

And yes, my diagram is total shit Blush

@SirChenjins

I saw it again tonight when I was out collecting DS from footie - car coming along the main road saw the car coming up to the cul de sac junction and pulled out to get out round the chicane before the other one pulled onto the main road, the car coming out of the cul de sac was obviously determined to get onto the main road to force the other car to stop behind the chicane - so they both had a standoff on the main road. It’s crazy Confused
They need to put a stop sign up at the end of the cul de sac.

The person pulling round the chicane was totally in the right. There's nothing coming in the other direction so they don't have to give way.

I'm glad that so many of you are saying that the car on the main road has right of way - I'm not sure why so many of the cul de sac residents do what they do. One of my friends lives there, I might ask her what's going on with them.

Where do you get the STOP sign added to? If your diagramme is correct to the road with the give way lines, to make the give way an actual STOP!

The car in the chicane only has to give way to a car already on the same road, not one turning onto it.

Put another way

The car in the chicane has to give way to any car on the road that does not have any other restrictions - like the give way lines the car on the left has. They have to give way until ALL traffic on the carriageway they are joining has passed, including the car at the chicane, cos their give way lines apply to ALL cars on that carriageway.

And you lobby your local council and contact Highways England to highlight the issue. As far as I remember they even reported it in Fix My Street, as that gets added to various databases.

We're not in England but I'm sure there's an equivalent here - I'll look into that, thanks Smile

I think the problem is that there are double dashed give way lines at both the chicane and the cul de sac entrance/exit, so it becomes a race to get beyond 'your' give way lines and onto the main road. It's ludicrous.

It's a design doomed to failure isn't it, the cul de sac driver presumably has a speed advantage if they can turn right without stopping. The main road needs some of those priority arrow signs, or the cul de sac needs a stop or no right turn sign.
