She caught it from a BOY!

My daughter came home from her second day in reception yesterday. She'd loved Tuesday but didn't look as happy at pick up yesterday afternoon.

As we turned into our street, a little tear rolled down her cheek - she's tearful when she's tired so presumed that was the problem. By the time we reach our garden gate she's whimpering, and full blown sobbing by the time we're in and shoes off.

I try to talk to her. Her dad tries to talk to her. Her sister tries to talk to her. But nobody can work out what is the matter, and she says she just wants to be left alone. We leave her to lay on the sofa cuddled up to the dog whilst watching TV.

I can hear her talking to the dog, so I listen in. I catch the end of the conversation... "I caught Toby*, a boy, I caught it from a boy!"

I bemused what she could have caught from him, but she grunts when I enter the room.

Later on at tea, she hiccups and starts crying again. We ask her what is wrong and this time she eventually tells us "I caught hiccups from Toby at school. He was hiccuping yesterday and now I've had hiccups all day, and it's all Toby's fault!"

Ah, to be 4 1/2 again and your biggest worry is catching hiccups from a BOY!

*Not his real name!

That should say

"I caught it from Toby*, a boy, I caught it from a boy!"

They are so funny at that age when they are trying to work out how the world works. I hope she knows now you can't catch hiccups?

HavelockVetinari · 09/09/2021 09:37

Ah bless! 4 is a hilarious age Grin

mummykauli7 · 09/09/2021 09:50

This is such an adorable thing to read!!

Whatliesbeneath707 · 09/09/2021 10:13

That is so cute.
When my dd started school age 4, she came home after the first day and announced “mummy, I love school. In fact, I think I love it more than you!” 😂
I reminded her of this as she returned to secondary school this week. I can safely say that age 13, she doesn’t love school more than me anymore!

We've explained this to her. Said they happen just to your body and you can't catch them from other people or catch them from other people.

She nodded. And then said "oh, like coughs then!" (She had a coughing fit at the weekend after swallowing a large crisp)

So then a conversation about sometimes you coughs just happen just to you but sometimes they are caused by illnesses that can be passed on to other people through germs in your cough...

This really made me laugh 😂

My DS was convinced his teachers lived in school all the time. I could understand his logic, but I had this lovely mental picture of them all getting out Zbeds, dossing down in the classrooms and queuing for the bathroom in the mornings.

Goldbar · 09/09/2021 11:16

What a little cutie Grin!

Hope she's feeling happier now.

helpfulperson · 09/09/2021 11:21

It must be so hard figuring out how the world works. Many thinks we as adults take for granted aren't actually logical and what you catch from others and what you don't is a good example.

One of mine thought the same, and inset day was heard as insect day, she was most upset that all her teachers were hunting mini beasts without her.
Notaroadrunner · 09/09/2021 11:48

So cute. At least you know she confides in the dog so next time she's upset sit her with the dog and stay out of sight but within earshot Smile

My sister was a primary school teacher for many years, apparently this is quite common among the very little ones, if they ever bumped into her whilst they were out of school doing mundane things like shopping etc they were shocked she had a life outside of school 🤣
WeddingBella · 09/09/2021 15:02

My lovely niece has just started school. She was talking about it non stop during the summer, she was so excited. She was very focused on meeting her teacher so my dm explained that Uncle Wedding (my DH) is a teacher - from that she became convinced she was going to see him in school.
We explained a few times that he works in a school far away from hers so he won't be there. She agreed each time, even telling me that his school is different to hers - and yet she was very very confused on her first day this week that she went to school and Uncle Wedding wasn't there Confused

MegaClutterSlut · 09/09/2021 15:39

Ds in reception told his teacher just before home time he was 'going to a new school tomorrow' so she stood ds at the door and made the whole class line up and all say there goodbyes individually to him as they left. He wasn't going to a new school 😂

Horseradishsauce · 09/09/2021 21:37

Ah, out of the mouths of babes 🥰

Luckily today I picked her up and she was in a good mood and no more mention of hiccups!

My dd has just started school and has obviously come across some new concepts. She often asks what is under the floor, but tonight, while eating her dinner, she suddenly jumped from her chair, looked horrified and said 'Oh no, Mummy, what's under the planet??? I can't feel it spinning!'
She's hilarious 😂

BruceAndNosh · 09/09/2021 23:21

After my first day at school, I apparently announced that I had enjoyed the day but didn't think I would bother going back again thank you very much

When DS started nursery he came home after a few weeks and told us there were twins in his class. I asked how had discovered they were twins and he said they were both called Frank.

purpleme12 · 09/09/2021 23:31

Oh my god this is so cute

That is classic!
Lockdownbear · 09/09/2021 23:38

Too cute, at least she knows his name. In Scotland so back a few weeks my LO sits beside "a girl" still doesn't know her name 😂

The really funny bit was that there weren’t two Franks in his class - there was one! So we had no idea where the confusion came from - maybe he was seeing double that day Grin

He’s 15 now and oddly enough is quite a bright boy, though we still laugh about this and a few other confused moments from his early years Grin
