Best/saddest ABBA songs

Help me out. I've always liked ABBA but had only ever listened to ABBA gold, so all the cheesy classics.

Today I listened to The Day Before You Came and it blew my mind. I'm looking for some recommendations of other great, lesser known ABBA songs that are similarly emotional, beautiful, melancholic...

Thanks in advance

DB and I loved Abba in the seventies. We bought all their albums. Everyone sneered at them at that point. DB died in 1994 RIP happy times

Knowing Me, Knowing You

Never used to be madly impressed by this one, especially as it got hijacked by Alan Partridge (‘Ahaaa’)

But one day I listened to the lyrics properly and they are Devastating ! It’s not just the end if a teenage romance, it’s the end of a grown up marriage with kids and all that entails.

‘Walking through an empty house
Tears in my eyes …’Sad

I agree @lots33, love that song!

DSis and I loved "Lovers live a little longer" when we were little. You never hear it though. It must have been an album track.

Eagle reminds you that they probably grew up in s Swedish mountain village and watched the eagles soaring for their childhood entertainment. They definitely feel it when they sing it, in the video.

Sometimes it feels as if the songwriters - whichever ones of them - wrote a mix of sometimes great, sometimes cheesy songs, to suit every mood and scenario ( who could feel all those in one lifetime) and the girls were singing them thinking "Ok....🙄 -"- but they all really relate to those soaring birds of prey.

@Rufus27

A few days before my elderly Dad suddenly unexpectedly died, we were discussing the name of an ABBA song he couldn’t remember. After lots of googling we found it on YouTube and DS, Dad and I ended up spontaneously dancing to it in his lounge (vaguely amusing given that Dad was partially paralysed from a stroke and DS could only just walk at the time; the three of us were in hysterics).

We ended up playing the song it at his funeral, but until now I haven’t been brave enough to listen to it since: m.youtube.com/watch?v=FhadXeLl05g

@Jenster03

Surprised 'i've been waiting for you' hasn't been mentioned.
Ahh @Jenster03, I was coming on to say that! Glad there is another person who knows it.

Love that song!

The visitors, very underrated song. As a pp mentioned , it was written about people hiding from the KGB or something like that.

crosshatching · 07/09/2021 21:53

Also Happy New Year has a gorgeous bittersweet happy/sad vibe to it.

ufucoffee · 07/09/2021 21:53

@Mumsgirls I too was a teenager when ABBA were at the height of their fame. They were so uncool. No one would ever admit to liking them.

SOS
Head over heels
Summer night city

saddest by a country mile is Winner takes it all

Bargebill19 · 07/09/2021 21:59

On a sightless more upbeat note (cos I’ve been crying listening to some of these especially slipping…)

The one that always makes me laugh/smile is “two for the price of one”.

maddy68 · 07/09/2021 22:00

Slippiing through my fingers makes me cry every time

longtompot · 07/09/2021 22:01

I now want to get a record player and play the vinyl I bought in lockdown. My originals got water damaged so I bought replacements, some I've not heard before.

SequinsandStiIettos · 07/09/2021 22:03

I say SOS as best song, but I did forget this Wink

Ginger1982 · 07/09/2021 22:05

I like 'One Man, One Woman.'

miltonj · 07/09/2021 22:06

Slipping through my fingers. It was sad before I had my daughter as my mum would sing it to me, now I have my own daughter it's almost too much

housewifeathome · 07/09/2021 22:06

The Winner Takes It All and One of Us are two of their most powerful songs for me.

I love love LOVE ABBA - their songs evoke some beautiful memories of my childhood.

Horizons83 · 07/09/2021 22:10

I have to say, I also like the two new ones that have been released.

doadeer · 07/09/2021 22:12

Chiquitita has some really poignant lyrics

How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they're leaving
You'll be dancing once again and the pain will end
You will have no time for grieving
Chiquitita, you and I cry
But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you
Let me hear you sing once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita

Dropdeadfred2 · 07/09/2021 22:12

Angel eyes... very up beat tune but the lyrics are sad
