Best/saddest ABBA songs

Help me out. I've always liked ABBA but had only ever listened to ABBA gold, so all the cheesy classics.

Today I listened to The Day Before You Came and it blew my mind. I'm looking for some recommendations of other great, lesser known ABBA songs that are similarly emotional, beautiful, melancholic...

Thanks in advance

@Geamhradh

Lesser known- my favourites are My Love, My Life from Arrival ("but I know I don't possess you, so go away, God bless you"- teenage angst) and Soldiers from the Visitors.

Well-known but haven't (and won't) listened to in 17 years- Slipping through my fingers. Probably the saddest (and truest) song in the history of tear-jerkers.

Yes gets me in my throat especially when in Mama mia

I really used to like Fernando ever since childhood, but that cheesy seen in the second mama mia film with Cher has rather ruined th song for me now.

When I kissed the teacher? Not sure if that's a well known one 😁

Hey Hey Helen - early feminist belter.

Slipping through my fingers. My little toddler used to sing it to her older sister when she went to school, it was also appropriate. ABBA songs work in so many situations Wink

Fernando is also lovely.

I think ABBA songs are so simple, yet really strike a chord.

3luckystars · 07/09/2021 20:21

The winner takes it all is also brilliant, happy and sad too.

queenofarles · 07/09/2021 20:21

Knowing me knowing you 😢

Love Eagle - on the Album

Another town, another train with Bjorn singing

I agree with AnyFucker - so sad to listen to as my dd goes away to uni this weekend.

catlovingdoctor · 07/09/2021 20:41

Cassandra...a very beautiful, sad, but lesser-known one. Under Attack is also not as well known but good.

GoGoPowerScooter · 07/09/2021 20:46

Our Last Summer / Knowing Me, Knowing You /The Way Old Friends Do - all of those get me every time

Tana433 · 07/09/2021 20:49

My favourite is Andante Andante closely followed by Winner Takes It All but really hard to chose from so many classics.

Grenlei · 07/09/2021 20:51

One of Us is really quite poignant. Name of the Game was one that used to chime with me a lot when I was younger and wondering if I meant anything to various men I was enamoured with (mostly no).

In my student house almost 30 years ago we used to have weekly Abba parties, and we'd round the night off by singing Thank you for the Music. I can't hear it without being transported back to those times 😊

Geamhradh · 07/09/2021 20:51

@SevenOldLadies

Agree with My Love, My Life

I also really like When All Is Said And Done and I Wonder (Departure)

Ohhhh yes! Good call. B side of something- I had the 45. Completely forgotten it. Will add it to Spotify Weepfile Brew
ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/09/2021 20:52

The cheesiest one is Thank you for the music. Love it.

My favourite too OP

The Winner Takes It All is a tear jerker for me, but One of Us has always been my absolute favourite ABBA song.

And sorry, but if Slipping Through My Fingers doesn't give you at least a hint of a tear then you've clearly got a swinging brick where your heart should be.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/09/2021 20:57

Slipping through my fingers made me cry.

I don't cry easily.

A few days before my elderly Dad suddenly unexpectedly died, we were discussing the name of an ABBA song he couldn’t remember. After lots of googling we found it on YouTube and DS, Dad and I ended up spontaneously dancing to it in his lounge (vaguely amusing given that Dad was partially paralysed from a stroke and DS could only just walk at the time; the three of us were in hysterics).

We ended up playing the song it at his funeral, but until now I haven’t been brave enough to listen to it since: m.youtube.com/watch?v=FhadXeLl05g

ABBA - Move On

CatNamedEaster · 07/09/2021 21:03

The Day Before You Came is my favourite of theirs. I heard someone (might have been Hazel Dean?) on Graham Norton's Radio 2 show talking about the story behind the song. She said there's one story that it's based on the life of someone in East Germany or Russia (can't remember) who was betrayed to the police so it's their recollection of the day before they were picked up. Might be a load of made up crap but it made the song feel even sadder and more ominous to me than it had before.

longtompot · 07/09/2021 21:04

Saddest - Winner Takes it All for me as they released it when they split up and I was DEVASTATED (I was 9)! Loved ABBA, still do.

Only heard Slipping Through my Fingers when it was in Mamma Mia which I went to see with my ed and she was a young teen and moving away from me emotionally. I sobbed in the cinema.

Best - Chiquita, Knowing Me Knowing You
