What's the worst meal you've been served at a wedding?

I'm veggie so unfortunately have had my fair share of shitty wedding meals as the vegetarians often seem to get shafted but this one takes the biscuit. Fancy wedding, very expensive and exclusive venue, meat eaters had a feast and it looked amazing, I was served......a grilled mushroom, and it was cold. This place is probably £100 per head at the very least and the best they could rustle up for a vegetarian was a mushroom. So, make me feel better, what's the worst meal you've been served?

I have had some lovely vegetarian food at weddings though, but mainly due to the bride or and groom being vegetarian. One memorable one was all home cooked buffet by the family, and another was a buffet with all lovely farm produce, nice cheese, home made bread, fruit and a barrel of beer!

Friend got married on cheap. Wedding was register office then walked to park got photos done then pub for meal, we paid for our own. Then all back to there's and got plastered. Best wedding ever

We really felt for the brideal party.
They had paid good money and actually had a photo of what a buffet portion should have looked like on a leaflet from the venue - quiche, ham and chicken with a generous helping of various intersting salads and a bread roll ( there was no bread). They had been completely ripped off.[/quote]
That's quite sickening, really. Imagine ruining someone's day like that to garner an extra couple of quid profit? Shameless bastards.
No bloody bread? 🤦‍♀️

Gertygypsey · 08/09/2021 20:10

Not a wedding but a hen party that I had to pay £30 to attend: a plate of scrambled eggs. Veggie option again.

A wedding at 2pm where they didn’t serve food until 8:30pm, once the evening guests had arrived. As soon as people saw the buffet being laid out a massive queue of starving people formed. The worst thing was after the ceremony we had to go sit down on tables so we were expecting a meal, but no it was just speeches with no drink to join in with the toasts. There was no table plan so it was chaos, people having to stand because there were no seats left together etc.

Another similar wedding where they just served a buffet later on to save money. We were evening guests and by the time we got there at 8pm they were only just serving the day guests their buffet who by this point were very grumpy and fed up. It was a bit awkward sat there not being able to go get any food.

I’ve been to cheap weddings that have been amazing. My cousin had his reception in a social club with a BBQ and it was one of the best weddings I’ve been to. If I was going to try save money I’d do something like that, cheaper venue or free guests, but make sure the guests that are there have a good time.

Sootybear · 08/09/2021 20:15

@NotPersephone that sounds fab. Honestly the best weddings aren't super posh or the ones that pretend to be.

@Fluffycloudland77

We had roast beef at our wedding but it was sirloin and I know it was nice because I would have never heard the end of it from dh if it hadn’t been.

We had 3 veggies at our wedding who all had the beef when we offered them to have any veggie option they wanted. I would’ve been happy for them to have curry or Chinese or Thai or anything. So they had duck for starters then beef.

We had salvers of bacon and sausage with baps for the evening do and a veggie option of toast pointed peppers with soft goats cheese. A non veggie guest took them all home.

Sorry are you saying that the beef at your wedding was so amazing that the vegetarians present just had to have it too?!
GreyhoundG1rl · 08/09/2021 20:26

The vegetarians had beef... They weren't vegetarian 😬

Stillcrikey · 08/09/2021 20:28

Not me but my sister. Her friend’s wedding has become legendary. The ‘food’ at the reception comprised of the bride and groom moving amongst the guests each with a box of bags of crisps and handing one bag to each guest 🤣.
They’ve been married for over 30 years and remain ‘frugal’.

CatherineMaitland · 08/09/2021 20:28

I worked for a wedding caterer for years, and once watched a chef stir mayonnaise into a mushroom risotto. Poor people. I'm always surprised more people don't go Middle Eastern for vegetarian options.

Special dietary requirements can get lumped into one because it's actually genuinely difficult to cook too many choices/options in one kitchen with usually limited space, all to be served in good condition and hopefully at the same time.

Buffets and BBQs for the main meal - most people seem to think these should be cheaper than a sit-down plated meal, but actually they're not (unless you DIY it), because you have to allow for more per person - or run out.

I’m so confused!
GreyhoundG1rl · 08/09/2021 20:31

Me too, Pretty
It doesn't make any sense.

millenialblush · 08/09/2021 20:31

@Hlglu56 I had a similar experience - at a wedding all day but buffet not put out until evening guests arrived. The evening guests headed straight to the buffet while the day guests were scrambling for food. The bride and groom didn't get to eat, and the dessert table was emptied before dinner had even made an appearance. It was sad as the happy couple did realise that everyone was hungry, but they had blown their budget on a fancy venue and scrimped on food.

I think she’s saying that the beef AND the duck was so amazing that the vegetarians gave up their long hold beliefs to eat the meat at her wedding 😂
GreyhoundG1rl · 08/09/2021 20:34

😂

GreenTortoise · 08/09/2021 20:38

A cold bacon roll. To make it worse there wasn't enough for everybody that they invited.

mamaduckbone · 08/09/2021 20:39

Lamb that was stone cold and literally raw. I don't eat lamb anyway, but cold raw lamb? No thanks.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/09/2021 20:39

@Prettybubblesintheair No, I gave 9 months notice I needed a suitable dish for them for the chef but they all decided to not be vegetarian that day 🤷🏻‍♀️

Christmas lunch is also an occasion to eat meat 🤨 but they’ll send back a starter with bacon in it because their vegetarian.

torquewench · 08/09/2021 20:39

I went to one and the starter was a tiny serving of fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil and the main was 2 sausages and about 4 semi mashed new potatoes in their skins. I can't remember if there was dessert or much else because I had way too much of the very nice free fizz.

Hullaballoonexperience · 08/09/2021 20:41

Have been to a very cold wedding in a marquee, beside a canal, where there was not food at all. Had gone in a summer flowery dress - was frozen by 8pm! On way home called in at chip shop in the village where we met most of the other guests tucking into fish and chips. The owner said that it was one of his best nights.

How can you take that nonsense seriously?

Animum2 · 08/09/2021 20:42

Couple years back was invited to African wedding in South London, all the food was spicy and I'm not a fan of spicy food so I had a plate of rice

ilovechocolate07 · 08/09/2021 20:45

Lamb. I don't eat it but never thought to just tick veggy to avoid the chance of it.
