What do you do in the evening - I need a hobby!

I'm SO bored of staying in, watching telly / staring at my phone.

What do you do in the evening? What hobbies can I do from the comfort of my house? Other than reading which I do enjoy (other than my phone!).

I used to have a social life but since lockdown and two small babies, I rarely go out in the evening and I'm still on maternity leave so not working in the day. And basically I'm bored! My DH works irregular but long hours so is often not around and when he is is happy to watch TV.

I think at the beginning of mat leave I was just exhausted but both children are sleeping better so I'm not completely knackered anymore and in bed by 9.30pm. But I'm also totally uninspired.

Just feels like a slog! And would love something to look forward to / enjoy in the evenings. Other than Wine

Are you arty, crafty, sporty?

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 06/09/2021 21:45

Bit embarrassing, but knitting is nice. I'm not a proper knitter, though, I use a simple round loom thing but I made some lovely scarves for people (and myself!) last winter and I'm looking forward to getting back to it this year. Choosing wool is a lovely thing to do!

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/09/2021 21:47

If you want to watch tv but keep your hands busy something like sewing, knitting or crochet might be nice. If you’re up a lot with the babies something you can pick up and drop at speed would be sensible Smile

Or puzzles? Crosswords, word searches?

DollyPartBaked · 06/09/2021 21:51

I'm definitely not sporty although I do like being outside and active - which is part of the problem as I'm not doing enough in the day (I am busy but it's feeding / weaning / nappies / naps etc.) which has made me lazy in the evening too.

Keeping my hands busy is a good shout. Stop me looking at the screen! Which I cannot stop!

Learn a musical instrument!
I took up guitar 5 years ago (online tuition is fab Guitario for one) and three months ago bought myself a digital piano (so can plug in headphones) and am now learning Piano with Pianote .. I can play and learn at times that suit me without disturbing anyone and I have barely glamced at the tv in months!

Crochet or Knitting is also good in winter, especially if you start with something that you don't have to focus on too much!

I crochet and cross stitch, slowly getting better at both but it keeps me busy and off screens! Try up YouTube Bella Coco videos to learn crochet.

I'm learning French - using an app, just 20 mins a day, it's actually relaxing but I'm not sure much stays in my head as I'm so tired by the evening!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/09/2021 09:04

Write a novel. Or research and write down your family history to pass on to your children using ancestry.com

HotSauceCommittee · 07/09/2021 09:59

There are lots of free drawing sessions/classes online. Start with the basic pens/pencils and paper around the house and see if you like it?
Online exercise class?

beingsunny · 07/09/2021 10:25

But nerdy too but I started doing puzzles, I bought a 500 piece where's Wally one for my 8yo which he seemed too hard so I promised I'd finish it for him, my god it was so relaxing, I'd put something like friends on in the background and do that.

Ronacorona · 07/09/2021 10:30

Yoga online is quite good, even if you're not sporty.

What about-

Baking
Take up a musical instrument, I learnt the flute and got reasonable results in a few months
Start crafting some Xmas decs, look up Pinterest for ideas
Duo-lingo for foreign languages
Join an online book club

Enjoy yourself, whatever you do!

I have an unusual hobby for an older lady. I would get so bored in the evenings as DH was always on his work laptop till late at night. He never wanted me to watch any interesting television without him so I'd just sit there after the kids had gone to bed. DH was always "I need 5mins" which turned into all evening. I would get so disappointed I'd waited all night and then we'd only watch a half hour tv program. To fill my time I did online courses, writing, crafts, sketching and reading but it was a bit lonely as I ran a home business and didn't get out much. So I went back to something I did in my youth and started gaming. Ten years on I have a busy social life, loads of online and offline friends and I even joined a choir. I look forward to gaming with my friends a few times a week. It was definitely the catalyst to finding myself.

OoglyMoogly · 07/09/2021 11:09

Crochet, knitting, cross-stitch, tapestry.
Watercolours, needle felting, rock painting; there's loads of things you can do Grin

Mayhemmumma · 07/09/2021 12:25

Blimey, I tidy up, pack school bags, drink de caff tea and scroll through my phone or Netflix whilst others are writing novels, learning languages, crocheting an outfit!

HighHighHopes · 07/09/2021 12:41

I crochet, cross stitch and embroider. Other than that, I find something to decorate or organise.

illuyankas · 07/09/2021 12:44

Gaming. Painting/drawing/crafting. Knitting/crocheting. Learn something, I'm slowly learning maths, programming and language over the years.

Chikapu · 07/09/2021 12:52

I've been a knitter for years but over lockdown learnt to knit socks (they'd always eluded me before) so most of my evenings are spent knitting socks. There are so many different techniques/stitches to learn that I find it endlessly entertaining.

bestbefore · 07/09/2021 12:56

Buying a paint by numbers picture is quite satisfying

NotMyCat · 07/09/2021 13:00
