What do you do in the evening - I need a hobby!

I'm SO bored of staying in, watching telly / staring at my phone.

What do you do in the evening? What hobbies can I do from the comfort of my house? Other than reading which I do enjoy (other than my phone!).

I used to have a social life but since lockdown and two small babies, I rarely go out in the evening and I'm still on maternity leave so not working in the day. And basically I'm bored! My DH works irregular but long hours so is often not around and when he is is happy to watch TV.

I think at the beginning of mat leave I was just exhausted but both children are sleeping better so I'm not completely knackered anymore and in bed by 9.30pm. But I'm also totally uninspired.

Just feels like a slog! And would love something to look forward to / enjoy in the evenings. Other than Wine

Toddler goes to bed around 8/8.30pm. Frankly I’m still tired after first year of crappy sleep so in bed by 10pm latest.

Those 90mins generally just cleaning, cup herbal tea, bath, read, look up bits online.

I love crochet, and embroidery (so many avenues for this, there are things like cross stitch and tapestry, or simple stitching to create more line based pictures), knitting is another good option (I prefer crochet as it works up faster and I find it easier). Drawing can be good - I use procreAte on the iPad and love Bardot brush for amazing tutorials (she has a website and YouTube videos)

Oooh and board games if you have someone to play with! There are soooooo many awesome ones out there!

Off the top of my head, some favourites are Pandemic, carcassonne, railroad inc, Azul (and it's various expansions, qwirkle, the crew, cascadia, calico, patchwork, code names... definitely recommend checking out board games!

Jigsaws, so satisfying to do! I love them and always have at least two on the go in the house somewhere.

I paint - watercolours and acrylic.

Mindyourbusiness22 · 07/09/2021 13:25

Watch a movie, play a game with my partner, read, workout, run, walk, swim, cook, have a bath.

I taught myself to crochet just after my first son and more recently I've taught myself to knit. YouTube is a great way to learn. I also read a lot.

I game, do puzzles including brain training ones, crochet, write, paint, diamond art, nail art.

Over the years I've done a number of free courses, learnt several languages, coding, learned how to decorate, plumb and play a couple of instruments.

I've recently started making jewellery.
I bought cheap supplies off eBay, watched a few you tube videos, and now make lovely leather boho style bead wrap bracelets.
I've given a few away to friends, and also sold a few on eBay!

SkankingMopoke · 07/09/2021 14:21

I've recently started doing jewel art (like painting by numbers but sticking on tiny plastic gems instead). It's not the most creative, as you are placing the gems where told following a key, but I find it's fantastic to zone out to and give my brain a rest as it requires a fair bit of concentration but no thinking. Finding something to shut up the various threads of conversation going on in my head is a rare thing! I love yoga, but even that doesn't do such a good job. I've been picking designs the DCs like, so they can be put up in their rooms because the finished articles are not to my taste at all! .

Oooh also - computer games? Animal crossing on the switch is AMAZING!

Rubyupbeat · 07/09/2021 16:47

I do sewing, dressmaking mainly.
Also, paint by numbers, you can get some beautiful intricate kits.
I also crochet and knit, but am very slow, its still enjoyable though.

Rubyupbeat · 07/09/2021 16:47

Oh yes and playing games on my switch

outnumbered77 · 07/09/2021 19:28

I've been doing a weekly spanish class via zoom for a year now. I love it!

Retraining. Writing (sideline as a novelist). Scrolling bleakly and relentlessly through the 24/7 news cycle. Pissing about on Mumsnet wondering where my evening went.

Bogoroditse · 07/09/2021 19:55

Sewing clothes. It is particularly good for your self image as you make clothes that look amazing on your body, not some generic body. Plus you can put really big pockets in everything. I recently made a denim skirt; I can smuggle two bottles of wine in the vast pockets. Definitely my happy place.

Sheerheight · 08/09/2021 13:38

Bogoriditse , I like the idea sewing and have had great intentions of taking it up about it since 1st lockdown.

If I see a woman out with 2 bottles of wine carried in a denim skirt I will know who it is Grin
