How can I flavour rice for tea?

I’m doing grilled halloumi, piri piri fries, coleslaw and flavoured rice for tea but I don’t know how to flavour rice!
What do I do to it to make it taste a bit “Nando’s-y”?
I’m not a bad cook but I’ve never done my own flavoured rice before Blush

Just make a spice paste and fry the cooked rice in it.

Thank you! So simple but I’d have never thought of it!

Stock cube in it when you boil it?

I always put a chicken stock cube in, maybe some sliced lemon if I'm feeling fruity

Fry some onion and garlic, with some peppers/courgette/carrots if you have some, all diced very small, then fry the dry rice for a minute until it soaks up some of the oil, then cook in stock. Nice easy vegetable rice that everyone likes here.

Chicken or veg stock cube or stock pot in the water works.

Bumblebeefriend · 05/09/2021 17:04

A teaspoon or more of tumeric works well too

Maflingo · 05/09/2021 17:05

If you have any, you could grate some garlic, ginger or lemon/lime zest into the rice (garlic/ginger while cooking, zest after cooking) - not all of them though, just pick one!!

Mix a 1-2 tablespoons of tom puree, herbs and spices, seasonings, good glug of olive oil or large knob of butter and stir into your rice water before you boil the rice. This works best if you follow the method of cooking rice so there is no water to drain. Whatever pan or quantity of rice you want just 1 inch of water over the top. Full boil for 10-15 minutes then low heat to steam off the water. Good luck!

Thank you for all the great tips! Will be trying all sorts of flavoured rices with meals this week now! 😋

I shove in some sweet chilli sauce and seasoning and then mix in chopped veg/sweetcorn.

KittenKong · 05/09/2021 17:13

I steam mine with herbs (mix of dried and fresh) - so dill and broad beans, or a ‘sabzi’ mix (parsley, coriander leek and fenugreek - you buy it mixed), or barberries.

Agadorsparticus · 05/09/2021 17:17

Turmeric, chilli powder, chicken stock and cumin in the water.

WrongKindOfFace · 05/09/2021 17:18

This pinch of nom recipe works well. You can change the veg depending on what you have in.

VladmirsPoutine · 05/09/2021 17:19

You could chuck in a bit of curry powder.

CombatBarbie · 05/09/2021 17:32

My chef husband puts diluting juice in some of his rice dishes

viques · 05/09/2021 17:35

I don’t think it would work for your menu but I like to make coconut rice using diluted tinned coconut cream instead water to cook the rice in.

Or
If you have saffron you can add a good few strands to the rice as you cook it , adds a subtle flavour and makes it look pretty too.

IndiaDreaming · 05/09/2021 17:38

Tumeric and fresh ginger in the water.

cushioncovers · 05/09/2021 17:47

A stock cube when boiling. Then a knob of butter mixed in when it's drained just before serving

Mamamamasaurus · 05/09/2021 17:50

Cook it in stock - chicken, beef, veg etc

Cuddlywaterfall · 05/09/2021 17:52

I was wondering how you could use rice to make tea then realised BlushGrin

This is what I was away to suggest-it’s delicious

I make Nando’s rice all the time from this article…

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 05/09/2021 18:03

I second using coconut milk or cream, and a veg stock cube as well when cooking. I’d use a full can of milk but maybe you could start with half a can and see if you like it. And add any spices you fancy (I usually throw in garlic powder, onion powder, ginger and either chilli or paprika (depending on whether I’m cooking for kids or adults). Google ‘Caribbean rice and peas’ and you’ll get a lot of recipes if you want exact measurements.

Iamclaracowbell · 05/09/2021 18:04

Finely chopped spring onions, lime juice and coriander
