How do you know you’re peri menopausal, and what happens….?

JemimaPyjamas · 04/09/2021 20:48

I’ve not had a period for, I think, at least two months. Maybe a bit more.
Previously they were like clockwork.

Also, while I blamed lockdown wine and treat dinners, I’m also wondering g how much that might be also contributing to weight gain.

Please tell me your experiences

How old are you OP?
Any change you might be pregnant....?

Benjispruce5 · 04/09/2021 21:09

I’ve had a few missed periods over the last couple of years, and they’re shorter but no weight gain. A few hot nights now and then. I’m 50.

Phyllis321 · 04/09/2021 21:11

Insomnia/early waking.
Drier skin/hair
Hot flushes
Joint aches
Thickening middle
Erratic moods/ anxiety/depression

Take your pick...
Insomnia was the killer for me so I started HRT.

I think the Covid vaccine caused my periods to be late. My last period arrived on time thankfully. I reported it on the yellow card scheme. Could it be that?

niceupthedanceagain · 04/09/2021 21:23

IMO all the really shit symptoms start a long time before missed periods

Kolo · 04/09/2021 21:25

Have a look at the balance app - there's many symptoms of menopause (and peri) that I had no idea were symptoms. For me it was a gradual development and worsening of symptoms till it all got too much and I realised what was happening. Waking in the night, every night, couple of times a night. Going for a wee more often, low mood, irritability (and when I use that word, I actually mean full on rage and red mist, felt like i could punch someone), tearful, dry eyes, nails weakened. Ive put on weight but not sure if that's peri - could just as easily be lockdown. But my metabolism has slowed over the years since 40 for sure. I still have regular periods, but I did have a blood test to check hormones and i am definitely peri.

SophieHMS · 04/09/2021 21:42

Horny as hell. And then sex? Meh.

JemimaPyjamas · 04/09/2021 22:15

I am 47 next Saturday. Sorry, should have said in my OP.

Looking at the balance app now. I wake up every night, possibly several times, but it didn’t occur to me why.

Erratic, heavy (omg - do heavy) periods
Brain fog (lucky if I can remember what I had for breakfast)
Mood swings and rage
A feeling of detachment
Weight gain after almost 50 years of eating what I want
Night sweats
Insomnia and waking for a wee

It’s great fun.

In case you're not aware, GPs can prescribe HRT to any woman over 45 based on symptoms alone. I did have hormones checked by blood test, but mainly to rule out anything else it could be (diabetes for frequent urination for example). Oh I was also getting pressure headaches ... think they were the most annoying symptom. Often with no pain at all, just feeling like my head was a balloon and about to pop.

Anyway, I'm 47 too, and recently started HRT. It's a bit of a faff but I'm starting to see massive improvements in my mood. And I'd obviously forgotten all about the pressure head thing! Read the articles on the balance app for a fair perspective on hrt. Lots of scare stories going round, so get the facts. Women don't have to endure horrible symptoms.

Kolo · 04/09/2021 22:21

Oh yeah, brain fog. @SirChenjins wrote my list for me 😬

SirChenjins · 04/09/2021 22:26

What list did I write?

SirChenjins · 04/09/2021 22:29

That looks wrong - I was trying to be funny there by saying I don’t remember writing a list because of my brain fog….

I’ll get my coat Grin

How's your sexy drive???

My response to the consultant "what's that?"

SirChenjins · 04/09/2021 22:37

My sexy drive has driven over the horizon and far, far away.

No, I got it. Then saw this post. Paranoia is also a symptom.

I’m 48 and getting a bit chubby for the first time in my life.. but then I have definitely eaten more and exercised less over the last 18 months.

Biggest problem is my hair. It was already shitly thin, but is definitely getting thinner around my temples and hairline. Would HRT help with this, or are there other options to try, like supplements or shampoo / hair thickening products?

SecretKeeper1 · 04/09/2021 23:16

PS my sexy drive is about as flat as my hair

TonyThreePies · 05/09/2021 00:05

Brain fog is the worst for me. I used to be really efficient and effective at work but now I spend most of my time not knowing what the hell people are talking about.
My periods have always been regular as clockwork but heavy and painful. Now they are sometimes early, sometimes on time but mostly late or non existent. And I FLOOD. I've literally stood there with a night time pad freshly put on and blood running down my legs where it's soaked through in minutes. The pain is less though, so that's something!

Furries · 05/09/2021 03:08

My response to the consultant "what's that?"

My sexy drive has got weeds growing on it. Keep trying to flatten them when I park the car.
amymorris01 · 05/09/2021 03:30

At my age i have been through the change and all I can say is if you get offered HRT snap the doctors hand off. It really worked for me. When I started the change I felt like a different person I was fed up and snappy but HRT made me feel normal again. If you can take it...do!

user1471538283 · 05/09/2021 09:43

I would miss periods for a bit and then I'd get one. I also had brain fog.

When the menopause started I was ok for a bit but after a few months it was horrific. Brain fog, aching limbs, feeling low, very irritable and night sweats that left me and the bed linen soaked three times a night. I went on HRT and it changed my life!
