Christening gift

What on earth is a suitable christening gift for a very luck boy who has lots of lovely things already?

I plan on getting a keepsake kind of thing but that's as far as I've got. All the obvious one, bank, cutlery set, brush/comb set have been snapped up by other family members.

I've seen a lovely pocket watch but considering he's only a baby it seems a silly present....help!

A book with a nice note inside? Something like a classics collection.

NannyR · 04/09/2021 10:44

A children's bible - "the Jesus storybook bible" is a bit old for a baby but will be very well read throughout childhood.

Soubriquet · 04/09/2021 10:46

It’s a shame someone has already bought it because one gift that people adore when I give it to them is a silver cutlery set with their name engraved on it

I need to double check but I'm sure his grandparent is getting his bible and he is gifted one by the church.

My go to present is usually a cutlery set but I was pipped to the post on this occasion.

I like the idea of a book, that could be an option.

I’ve just googled unusual christening gifts. Some suggestions;-

buy a star

personalised christening book

personalised music box

personalised building blocks

There’s lot more ideas. Just literally google unusual christening gifts

My go-to baptism gifts for kids are a Noah's Ark music box, a copy of Oliver Jeffers' Here We Are, or a bottle of port for when they are older.

If they are religious, I get them some of the Teddy Horsley books, which are about a church-going teddy. Suitable for children aged about 3-7.

Starlightstarbright1 · 04/09/2021 10:59

My son was older when Christened. But 2 stand out gifts. An engraved compass and a st Christopher on a chain.

We also had a wooden frame engraved with time and place of christening.

NannyR · 04/09/2021 11:01

A couple of the little people big dreams books would be nice, you could pick out people you have found particularly inspirational.

Oneofeachclub · 04/09/2021 11:03

A silver bookmark which could be engraved with name, date etc.

Grohlette · 04/09/2021 11:06

I bought an Emma Bridgewater dish with name and DOB on it, depends on how much you want to spend

Enko · 04/09/2021 11:12

I wouldn't do the trinkets personally. How about premium bonds? They start at £25 and may be worth a lot more when the child is an adult.

I'd second this. Otherwise something practical that will be used ie toys, books or clothes.

Silver gifts, bible etc are all very well but the DC is unlikely to want them when they're older and so the parents have yet more stuff they don't want. I promise you, I have experience here!

Premium Bonds are an excellent suggestion.

Totally agree with the trinkets, plus anything made of silver needs regular polishing otherwise it tarnishes, but, for a child being brought up in a Christian family, a well written children's Bible should get plenty of use.

Noreturnto · 04/09/2021 11:35

I am looking at christening gifts too..I was thinking of a jellycat bunny? is that ok?

isettled · 04/09/2021 11:47

Excellent suggestions and good points about trinkets just taking up space.

I have got him a star already as I got one for his sibling too.
I have found a personalised yo-yo for a small momento and I'll look into the premium bonds. I wasn't aware I could take them out for a child that's not mine.

Yes well NannyR you have to get them on board for that. It doesn't always pan out the way you might hope. There are more exciting books from a child's PoV.
Besides, when I said 'older' I meant grown up ie when they leave all their unwanted belongings behind!

Jellycat bunny sounds fine to me Noreturnto.

MsSquiz · 04/09/2021 11:52

DD was christened last weekend and received:
A book of classic fairytales

A promise book (personalised)

A huge selection of books
Money
A wooden Noah's ark
A plant named after her
A star named after her
Photo frames
Jellycat toys
A steiff bunny
Clothes

Someone gave us a bottle of whisky from the year of his birth which was lovely and unusual!

sandgrown · 04/09/2021 11:59

I bought a wooden calendar that can be altered each day and lasts forever .

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/09/2021 12:01

We usually give a nice illustrated version of a children's book. Something like...

www.amazon.co.uk/Jungle-Illustrated-Interactive-Elements-Classics/dp/0062389505/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=illustrated+jungle+book&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1630753268&sr=8-1

Noreturnto · 04/09/2021 12:09

Thanks for this thread op..I am going for premium bonds. .like you I never realised I could buy for children other than my own!

doodlyfiddly · 04/09/2021 12:15

I tend to give coin sets, bought from The Royal Mint. You can buy from the year the child was born if recent, or they do lovely collections such as Winnie the Pooh or Beatrix Potter etc. They are keepsakes but also retain some value.

Humberbear · 04/09/2021 12:25

Gave my grandchildren a wooden stool with their name/ date of christening and a picture on it. They still use the stools now to sit on at small table and they are 7/8

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/09/2021 12:26

My boys were each given a pewter tankard as a gift for their baptisms. They're teenagers now and still use them.
