Christening gift

What on earth is a suitable christening gift for a very luck boy who has lots of lovely things already?

I plan on getting a keepsake kind of thing but that's as far as I've got. All the obvious one, bank, cutlery set, brush/comb set have been snapped up by other family members.

I've seen a lovely pocket watch but considering he's only a baby it seems a silly present....help!

I would go for good editions of classic children's books. Chronicles of Narnia are my go-to because of the religious allegory. OK, they won't be suitable for quite a while (but books aren't space consuming to keep) and they're fantastic for later childhood

We had all our three DC christened and were given lots of things. Mostly useless - like china bowls for babies or a ludicrous pewter cutlery set. After a few years I sold them and gave the DC the cash.

So I advise something actually useful,op, such as a lovely storybook, maybe something they will read later - we were also given some Shirley Hughes books which I loved. Or premium bonds, as I see others have already suggested.

They might have a shop in your local church?

Or a tree if they have a big enough garden?

Usbourne children’s bible stories book is my go to.

Hipflask with initials engraved on it.
One for when they are older clearly!!

That looks great thanks! I've got a christening to go to and was wondering what to get.

When I was christened 45 years ago I got the traditional gifts - bangle, bowl, napkin ring etc etc....but the ones I used over and over were the books. Lovely hardback books with a note in the front of who gave them to me. I still have my AA Milne poems and still love it.

I always go with a bible or bible stories book, don’t attend many though as tend to avoid those being done for the party/event rather than for the religious element.

@Enko after looking into premium bonds the wee one needs to be 1yrs in case that's an issue.

Other family members have promised all the usual go to items I'd go for. I know he's getting a bible, a St. Christopher, lots of books and trinkets have been nabbed by other people. I've left it to the last minute as per usual so it's a bit of a rush

I always buy the bunnykins set. Got it myself 63 years ago. Still have it.

For boys, I tend to get personalised cuff links as a keepsake for when they are older.

For girls, a charm bracelet. Bonus of being able to add to it on special birthdays etc.

If you do go for premium bonds then give the parents a heads-up. NS&I will write to them for proof of the child’s identity and will only accept official documents such as a certified copy of the birth certificate. The deadline is quite tight so they will need to be expecting it.

isettled · 04/09/2021 23:48

@ZoyaTheDestroyer sorry yes I should have mentioned that too.

His mum knows this is my plan but I'll need to wait a few weeks until he's 1 to do it. I'll remind her when I apply and get him some more as his birthday present too.

Personalised cake slice. Something we have used a lot for all occasions.

Where does it say they have to be 1 out of interest? I was thinking of doing this for a relative.

isettled · 05/09/2021 07:01

@StarshipsAreMeantToFly it came up as an error when I tried to register . Although I've just looked again to screen shot it and it's not saying it now....very strange.
Although they were doing work in the site so it may have been an error.
