Does anyone else have a smelly belly button? 😭

I didn't know I did but before my shower after the gym I wondered what the smell was... identified it... WTF 🤢

Fungal infection - I get them all the time in mine.

Canestan cream in it…!

Autumnleavesfalling · 03/09/2021 18:56

Would sudocrem help? I don't have any canesten.

Ugh... hoping it's recent and it's not always been like it and I have never noticed 😭

I put a drop on tea tree oil on a shower scrunchie with and wash mine

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 03/09/2021 18:59

Is it sore? If not it’s probably just a build up of dead skin and sweat etc. A good wash and dry (make sure it’s dry!) every day should stop the smell. It’s the same smell you get on stretched ears when they’re not cleaned properly.

fabulouslyglamorousferret · 03/09/2021 19:04

Antibiotic ear drops or eyes drops clear it up quickly - then make sure you try it properly after you shower

Haywirecity · 03/09/2021 19:10

Its probably a fungal/yeast infection. Get some Clotrimazole. That'll clear ut up.

dementedpixie · 03/09/2021 19:12

I stick sudocrem in mine

BashfulClam · 03/09/2021 19:12

Mine is really deep and like straight line so it can get minging. The smell is awful, and nude a lm antiseptic wipe each time or some tea tree oil.

continuallyconfused · 03/09/2021 19:13

I had this a few years back. Dr said it's common if you have a very "innie" bellybutton. She recommended Daktarin cream, use a cotton bud to get it in!

ToughLoveLDN · 03/09/2021 19:25

Please be careful putting straight tea tree oil on your skin. You can end up with terrible reactions, even chemical burns

Ivy48 · 03/09/2021 19:26

Clean it out and dry, some talc to dry it out and it’ll be fine

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 03/09/2021 19:27

Yeast or anaerobic infection, just use some soap and sudocreme!

GlamourSpider · 03/09/2021 19:34

I had a fungal infection once (identified by smell bleurgh). Each morning and night I cleaned it with hot(ish) salt water and a cotton bud and fully dried it after. I repeated for 4/5 days and it went.

3cats4poniesandababy · 03/09/2021 19:37

I have a very innie.

I mainly just make sure to give it a 'deep' clean with soap and when/if necessary give a wash with salt water.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/09/2021 19:37

Have a Hibiscrub bath and use cotton buds. It'll sort that and take care of any other places where the fungus/bacteria could be lurking on your skin. You might need to bath in it twice, but after that, it'll be pretty much sorted.

CaMePlaitPas · 03/09/2021 19:38

As long as it's not red/crusty you can use a bit of rubbing alcohol. Or you can even use hand sanitiser we are all using at the moment - make sure it has 70% alcohol and it'll get rid of the smell.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 03/09/2021 19:51

Chuck a bit of talc in it after you shower. It's just where it doesn't dry properly.

Autumnleavesfalling · 03/09/2021 19:55

I love Mumsnet!

Thank you. It's kind of an embarrassing thing to ask about 😂

Now if you excuse me, I have a date with cotton buds and salt water ....

I think if it was smelly all the time you'd have noticed it! You noticed it today after all! If it's bad smelling to the point you notice it just from the normal distance your face is from your belly button I'd also say it's likely a fungal infection.

Kuachui · 03/09/2021 20:14

If I've been sweating mine gets really sweaty because my button is massively innie and I need to clean it properly when I'm done doing anything that causes sweat

dementedpixie · 03/09/2021 20:14

I dont use talc as it can mix with dampness in the belly button and make a paste that can form into crusty bits. Sudocrem seems to work OK

MistyPop21 · 09/09/2021 19:45

Sorry to jump in but do you also get discharge ? I've got this problem at the moment and debating whether I need to book a doctor's appointment ? I'd be so embarrassed 🙈

dementedpixie · 09/09/2021 19:56

Mine can be moist inside and a bit smelly as its an innie. Sudocrem definitely helps

Porridgealert · 09/09/2021 20:00

@MistyPop21. I used to get a discharge and it could be a bit crusty. It was a fungal/yeast infection. I had it on and off for ages. Eventually I used Clotrimazole. You can buy it over the counter. About £3. It cleared it up and I've not had a problem since (2yrs). If you have Canestan on the house, I guess you could try that instead.

MistyPop21 · 09/09/2021 20:27

Thankyou for replying 😊 I haven't got any canestan but I'll order the other cream now. I've had it on and off for a while too, I thought it was my belly piercing but I took that out a few months ago.
