Texas bans all abortions beyond six weeks

Absolutely horrifying that women's rights are being trampled on again. The U.S.A. is going backwards in denying women the right to choose what to do with their own bodies.

@Coogee

Can they go and get it done in another state?
Texas is something like 3 times the size of the UK so travelling to a neighbouring state will only be an option for a small number of women.

@VladmirsPoutine

I also think there's a lot more to it than just purely controlling women's bodies & autonomy.
The Stasi like bounty payments of $10,000 to people who inform on women trying to avail of abortion or on anyone assisting a women trying to get an abortion (even a taxi driver who brings her to a clinic!), has huge ramifications for the right to privacy. If people don't have the right to privacy on health issues, it can be eroded elsewhere.

So dark. So dystopian.

TheHouseILiveIn · 03/09/2021 19:11

I can't get worked up about this. It's a democracy, so presumably this is what people want.

sociallydistained · 03/09/2021 19:13

This is horrific. I found out at 8.5 weeks after having periods. I ultimately chose to continue my pregnancy but I cannot imagine having that choice taken away.

The war on women continues.

Oh fuck off.

The GOP in Texas have rammed this through and the Supreme Court has assisted them. People did not vote for it.

'I can't get worked up by men removing reproductive rights from women. No biggie'

Moron.

EishetChayil · 03/09/2021 19:26

Gilead.

mancarose · 03/09/2021 19:26

I was horrified, most unwanted pregnancies aren't even known at that many weeks also!! The poor women/girls, can guarantee they won't be increasing safe sex education to help the affects of this.

Unfashionable · 03/09/2021 19:29

Their state, their democratically elected politicians, their jurisdiction, their laws. I might not agree with it, but so what? I don’t live in Texas, so it’s really none of my business.

Have you no compassion?!!

@MabelSable no you fuck off

Oh so you do get worked up over some things then.

Bless.

TSSDNCOP · 03/09/2021 19:37

@MouseholeCat

I read your link with interest.

May I ask, at an average clinic that does provide abortion what is the average cost? My point, would that be already beyond the means of the women that typically fall into the demographic that seek later abortion?

It looks as though even travel to a neighbouring state would not help.

thefourgp · 03/09/2021 19:41

It’s horrific. Brought to them by the same brainwashed sadists that look down on single mothers while claiming to be compassionate religious believers.

TSSDNCOP · 03/09/2021 19:42

It looks as though the nearest neighbour states would be New Mexico and Oklahoma to the north and west, limiting options even further.

TSSDNCOP · 03/09/2021 19:45

I've googled and the average T1 abortion cost is $508, T2 $1195.

TheHouseILiveIn · 03/09/2021 19:48

@MabelSable yeah, but not Texas banning abortions 🙄

What do you mean @VladmirsPoutine and I don't mean that in a funny way, just genuinely want to know!
@MabelSable yeah, but not Texas banning abortions 🙄
Because women loosing body autonomy is no big deal.

Unfashionable · 03/09/2021 19:51

@sociallydistained

My degree of compassion is completely irrelevant to the laws of a particular state in a foreign country. I have spent enough time in Texas over the years to know that their predominantly Christian conservative political culture is completely different to that of the U.K, so British liberal hand-wringing about it is pointless.

Exactly

Yes. It seems you get worked up over trivial shit and don't care about consequential things.

Run along now.

Susannahmoody · 03/09/2021 19:53

^^

I'd take a guess and say if you are controlling women in their health care choices they you're also controlling them politically, socially, economically.

Because if a woman has a child to look after she's less likely to complain about things.

Old as the hills really. Hence this movement in the US.

Haywirecity · 03/09/2021 19:58

@Booknooks

Initiated by trump, but biden also hates women so sadly not surprising, but fucking depressing.
Neither president initiated these laws, although Trump might have softened the ground for them. These are introduced by individual states. Biden has vowed to fight the laws. To go to a neighbouring state for an abortion would be like going from the the south coast of England to Scotland - worse case scenario. Other states have also introduced similar laws - Alabama has banned abortion completely - but all of them have stays against them while they are being appealed through the legislature.

Piss off. I'm entitled to my opinion
