Make the pain go away

Burntfingerz · 02/09/2021 22:42

So as my user name suggests, I've burnt my fingers.

Three hours ago I picked up a burning pot with my hand .

The pain was fucking horrendous and hasn't really eased.

I've burnt quite badly the front and backs of four fingers.

I have had my hand wrapped in an iced tea towel for hours but each time
I take it out to change the water/ ice, the pain returns. With a vengeance.

Please can anyone suggest anything else I can do. It's so bloody painful.

I thought you had to run burns under cold water tap for at least 10 mins continually. Might be worth a try? Sounds awful, I hope you get better soon.

Isababybel · 02/09/2021 22:47

I would advise ringing 111.

Wolfiefan · 02/09/2021 22:48

You shouldn’t ice burns. Running cold water whilst dealing with 111.
Good luck OP.

It sounds like you need to get it seen to.

CrimeJunkie01 · 02/09/2021 22:52

It's far too late for cold (they say tepid now) water. That should happen immediately.

Burntfingerz · 02/09/2021 22:54

I did apply cold water immediately. The iced wrapped up in a tea towel I put on afterwards.

Jeez it is so sore .

Thank you for your replies.

I'd get it looked at. I burnt my fingers last Friday and the pain had gone within a couple of hours. I now have a lovely blister which I'm trying really hard not to pop.

TwooThirty · 02/09/2021 22:55

Have you taken paracetamol? Have you checked the NHS website for advice?

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/09/2021 22:57

Oh, you poor thing! It's excruciating because there are so many nerve endings in the fingers.

You really need to get it looked at tonight. Start by calling 111.

honeygriff · 02/09/2021 23:01

If you cover it with cling film or a sandwich bag after the ice it helps.

LittleCatDog · 02/09/2021 23:05

I know if I asked my mum for advice she would 100% say "have you put lots of sudocrem on?" Probably not helpful but it is the family cure for absolutely everything! Once you're done icing and cooling. Hope you feel better!

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/09/2021 23:08

NHS advice nere:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/

You should go to a hospital A&E department for:

alll chemical and electrical burns
large or deep burns – any burn bigger than the injured person's hand
burns that cause white or charred skin – any size
burns on the face, hands, arms, feet, legs or genitals that cause blisters

Make sure you have removed any rings.

Elisheva · 02/09/2021 23:10

You need to go and get it seen to, badly burned fingers need medical attention to make sure they heal without restricting your movement.
Wrap your fingers in clingfilm - the pain is caused by the air touching the burn, and then go to A & E.

SomeInspirationRequired · 02/09/2021 23:16

After sun May help a little but do you think it should be seen by someone?

TheWeatherWitch · 02/09/2021 23:18

A bit late now, but I keep a tub of aloe Vera gel in my kitchen, on the window so easy access.

It’s great for taking the sting out of burns. Although you do need to run them (Burns) under cool water for ten minutes immediately too.

Sorry op, Burns are horrible. Hopefully you will feel lots better by tomorrow.

Oliveandsage · 02/09/2021 23:19

You should run your hand under tepid/cool but not cold water for a minimum of 10 minutes post burn - worked in a kitchen where burns were a daily occurrence.

I would seek medical advice, either out of hours or a minor injuries if you have one near you.

Don’t ice the burn, do you have a bandage to hand? If you wrap that (loosely!!) around the burn it should stop the air getting to it and causing further pain, but definitely seek medical advice

Oliveandsage · 02/09/2021 23:21

Oh, and take pain medication, it will help!

Notashandyta · 02/09/2021 23:22

Carry around a bowl of old water and keep your hand su merged in it. Keep replacing with fresh cold now and then. I burnt my fingers on boiling oil the other day and this was the only thing that took the pain away...

And consider 111 if needed as pp have said

Notashandyta · 02/09/2021 23:22

Cold not old!

NotMyCat · 02/09/2021 23:23

Painkillers
Clingfilm to keep the air out
111

I had to be seen when I spilt boiling caramel on my hand, thought it was a bit overkill but because it was on my hand and the size of it I ended up having treatment

mrsfollowill · 02/09/2021 23:25

I've slept with my hand hanging out of bed in a bowl of cold water before. I was quite young (early 20's) and rather drunk though- had an incident with a hot grill making cheese on toast after a night out Blush

DownWhichOfLate · 02/09/2021 23:28

Take painkillers. Keep hand in bowl of cold water. You may be in for a sleepless night.

longtompot · 02/09/2021 23:35

I burnt my fingers on the lid of a cast iron casserole when I took the lid off without an oven glove after just taking the pot out of the oven. The pain was immense. I kept it under running cold water for as long as I could, but every time I took my hand out the pain just got really bad again. I had a bowl of water which I kept my hand in and found if I just kept my hand in until the water was room temp it didn't hurt to bring my hand out. I think I did do several changes of water until I found this out and I think I eventually fell asleep with my hand in the bowl of water.

trippingflip · 02/09/2021 23:37

Painkillers.
Cold water.
Head out to a&e if there's a risk of burnt/melted tendons and ligaments (which, with the burn you describe, sounds plausible) .
Prepare for massive discomfort.

turnthebiglightoff · 02/09/2021 23:38

Pain medicine and something cold on it while you sleep. It will feel so so much better in the morning. Probably won't help but repeating to yourself in your head over and over that the pain is just your bodies way of coping with trauma... sounds silly but really helps me when I'm in severe pain!
