How do you make your living room/house smell nice?

Mine smells of...nothing! Except last night's dinner. I'm not a fan of candles but are there any nice room fragrances that you recommend? The Glade stuff seems quite synthetic. I spray zoflora on our rugs but can't say it seems to last iyswim

True Grace diffusers and room spray are amazing. They last a really long time, so although seem expensive, I think they're good value overall.

Etinox · 02/09/2021 09:59

Air the house, unless the heatings on all the windows are open and always use extractor fans when cooking. Primark candles are v cheap, not synthetic or overwhelming and I’ll often leave one burning all day. Flowers even if not scented, air a room too.
I’m also rigorous about rubbish. So a well sealed food caddy, no hanging around smelly trash, it goes straight into the outside bin.

FizzyDibdab · 02/09/2021 09:59

Frequent airing, I keep the windows in all the rooms open a few inches all day depending on the weather. Dust and clean regularly and then burn Yankee All is Bright
candle, the scent is light & citrussy.

I do love a good scented candle but apparently they’re really bad for air quality, even the soy ones. At the moment I love an Aesop room spray. Lasts 24 hours.

NotMyCat · 02/09/2021 10:01

I use wax melts mostly and have the windows open a lot

FizzyDibdab · 02/09/2021 10:01

In the winter, I wipe down my radiators with a bit of fabric conditioner on a damp cloth. The room smells lovely when the radiator is on.

RussianSpy101 · 02/09/2021 10:02

Air the house; windows open in the day.

Wax melts after dinner

Homeontherangeuk · 02/09/2021 10:53

Following, I love open windows in summer, highly sensitive to the cold so can't tolerate from now onwards😭

Mariell · 02/09/2021 11:17

Make sure that whatever you choose isn’t going to be eaten by pets as some may be poisonous but you can use herbs as houseplants and their natural scent is lovely.

I use wax melts and I also have an electric oil diffuser

Usual2usual · 02/09/2021 11:46

i use a febreze 3volution plug in by the front door so I get a nice smell walking into the hall (we have a toilet right next to the front door too so helps if the kids decide to poo in it right before a visitor arrives which they do all. the. time lol).

I use scented candles in the living room and kitchen too I like the Sand and Fog ones.

I have two smelly dogs so keep my windows open pretty much all the time too.

Tal45 · 02/09/2021 11:49

Just open the windows - why does they house need to smell of something? Almost anything else you use just means you'll all be breathing in chemicals.

MinesAMassiveSalad · 02/09/2021 11:50

Windows open, extractor fans used. Check coat cupboard for costs that need cleaning (or at least airing outdoors.)

Lavender essential oil, a few drops in water as a room scent. Sometimes I will add a few drops to some bicarbonate of soda and sprinkle the mix on upholstery and carpets before vacuuming off a while later.

GintyMcGinty · 02/09/2021 11:52

Plug in air fresheners on eat floor of house and vanilla candles in the evening if we've had a smelly dinner

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/09/2021 11:53

I keep it clean and dust free. Open the windows every day..in cold weather for only 10-20mins to get fresh air in.

Asthmatics in this house so all perfumes, sprays, candles, air fresheners, etc are banned.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 02/09/2021 11:54

I like a scented candle but they have their limitations. And of course you quickly become accustomed so you stop smelling it even if it is kicking out a nice scent. I agree with PPs about airing the house as much as possible, and also getting rid of rubbish frequently.

The thing I struggle with is that burnt dust smell you get after vacuuming. Never been able to stop it, across various vacuum cleaners.

MooBoom · 02/09/2021 11:54

Candles, diffusers and air fresheners all set me off. I get nauseous with strong scents so I tend to crack a window open and just let some fresh air in and let food smells escape. Other than that some shake and vac on the carpet before hoovering x

Olympiadreamer · 02/09/2021 12:01

Windows, windows, windows.

2kl4skl · 02/09/2021 12:07

~Windows open always, even just a little bit
~shake and vac regularly for large rug. Got quite a strong smell
~Reed diffusers
~ plug ins (don't use all the time but give a quick burst of fragrance)
~ no plates and smelly things left lying around. General tidiness.

~might do a candle but they're not always that strong
~no pets (no offence intended, when we have family's dog round, you can notice he's been)

GoodnightGrandma · 02/09/2021 12:08

All I do is open the windows. I’m not a fan of us breathing in chemicals that aren’t needed.

ParadiseLaundry · 02/09/2021 12:21

As everyone else is saying opening windows make the biggest difference. Also dusting and vacuuming at least once a day. I like to use a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar with a few drops of an essential oil. The vinegar is a natural deodoriser but the vinegar smell quickly dissipates leaving the essential oil smell.

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/09/2021 13:29

@ParadiseLaundry
Vinegar is wonderful. It’s non toxic but as strong as bleach for killing bacteria. It is also anti-fungal and can be used to treat mildew. Finally, it eats through limescale left by hard water.

Tulips15 · 02/09/2021 13:30

I have a plug in entrance hall way, living room, kitchen and one on landing, I have the pod scent thing ( Air wick?) in bathroom too...
I Feel my house never smells nice though, its cleaned daily (6 people and 2 cats!)
When people visit they will mostly commet " It smells nice' but I just cant smell anything!

Bagelsandbrie · 02/09/2021 13:37

Windows open, nice candles and washing hung up to dry in doorways so the washing smell can waft about.

FoodIsOnMyMind · 02/09/2021 13:39

Windows open all day everyday even just a crack in winter.
Wax melts after a smelly dinner.
