I keep seeing it on MN. It seems to mean grumpy but I'm curious to know in which areas/regions it's used?

TIA

I only know it from Artic Monkeys, don't think it's used in Scotland. 'Radge' is though, basically furious, uncontrollable.

m030978 · 01/09/2021 18:36

I use it (South Yorks)
DH uses it (Lancs and Peak Dist)
Teenage DS doesn't use it (NE Derbyshire) - maybe he just has weird friends?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/09/2021 18:37

Nottingham. Very common here.

imnottoofussed · 01/09/2021 18:41

Manchester

Mard arse or stop being so mard = someone being soft or reluctant to do something or whingeing about something

Cob on = in a mood and being sulky

Warmhandscoldheart · 01/09/2021 18:42

Used in Norfolk, ex MIL called most women Mardy cows Hmm

ofwarren · 01/09/2021 18:44

Lancashire and we would say mard arse

IdblowJonSnow · 01/09/2021 18:49

Lincs, notts, Derbyshire and yorkshire.

I remember saying it in London and was amazed that no one had ever heard of the word! Shock

Pinkmagic1 · 01/09/2021 18:49

Used all the time here in Nottingham.

I can remember using it in conversation with a friend from London years ago and she hadn't a clue what I was going on about!

gogohm · 01/09/2021 18:53

East mids

Unfashionable · 01/09/2021 18:54

Mardy is a very common expression in Derbyshire / Nottinghamshire where I grew up. It doesn’t just mean ‘grumpy’, it has strong connotations of sulkiness or childish petulance, too.

ferneytorro · 01/09/2021 18:56

East Lancashire - also mard arse (may just be one word apologies).

MarisPiper92 · 01/09/2021 18:58

I'm from Sheffield, and "mardy" and "mardy arse" were used constantly. Always assumed it originated in South Yorkshire, but seems like it's more widespread than I thought.

Mardycustard123 · 01/09/2021 18:59

Ooop north. Grin

Cam2020 · 01/09/2021 19:05

Didn’t the Arctic Monkeys from Sheffield have a song called ‘Mardy Bum?’

Yep. I'd never heard of the term until I heard that song!

maddy68 · 01/09/2021 19:12

It's a northern phrase

Fennellathewitch · 01/09/2021 19:16

Add Cumbria to the list, I would say understood 'awl ower grim North'

PersianStar · 01/09/2021 19:46

Derbyshire here too and it’s currently used daily to describe my moaning 2 year old
Doesn’t want dinner on the blue plate she’s just picked, it has to be on the green plate. Wants the skin peeled off her apple but then it’s now broken so she can’t eat it. Want a sandwich cut into squares, then cries because it’s not 1 big one… definition of mardy Grin

Joystir59 · 01/09/2021 19:47

I'm from Coventry and was a mardy kid

CoffeeWithCheese · 01/09/2021 19:51

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

I always thought it was a Yorkshire term? It's a great word though, I love it.

Growing up on Tyneside our equivalent was "raj" or "rajjy" - as in "she went proper rajjy on us", or "he had a proper raj on."

I prefer marcy tbh.

As someone from the NE who moved to Derbyshire - I'd say it doesn't really equate with radjy... that's more actively angry, mardy's much more of a low level stroppy attitude.

For the current definition - DD1 tends to embody it (tweenage hormones starting early). It is a glorious word, rapidly adopted into my vocabulary when I moved here.

lachy · 01/09/2021 19:54

Mardy bum 😆 Midlands here and coaching southerners in various phrases!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 01/09/2021 19:56

I would have thought it's all across the UK? I'm familiar with mardy and have only lived in Hampshire, Surrey and London.

Theforest · 01/09/2021 19:57

There is an American tennis player called Mardy Fish 😂.

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 01/09/2021 19:58

North Midlands as in "you're a right Mard arse" or "you're being mardy".

NewYearNewTwatName · 01/09/2021 19:58

Mardy, mardy arse used in East Yorkshire.

also Raj haven't heard it in donkeys years though, had forgotten all about it until GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal mentioned it.
it was used in a "alright alright don't get a raj on" so of way.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 01/09/2021 19:58

I use it but no one else in the north east seems to
