I keep seeing it on MN. It seems to mean grumpy but I'm curious to know in which areas/regions it's used?

TIA

Was used in Leicestershire when I lived there.

PresidentJoey · 01/09/2021 17:04

My friend from Derbyshire always uses 'mardy'.

I also love the Scouse term for someone being grumpy/in a bad mood 'Eeee, he's got a right cob on!' Grin

Keladrythesaviour · 01/09/2021 17:05

I say it and I'm from Birmingham.

Justawaterformeplease · 01/09/2021 17:06

Interestingly, the meaning seems to vary between Yorkshire, Lancashire and E Mids. en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/mardy

iklboo · 01/09/2021 17:06

Salford / Manchester. Stop being mard / a mardy arse.

mumsie8 · 01/09/2021 17:07

South Yorkshire here too

Marmite27 · 01/09/2021 17:08

Common parlance in Yorkshire.

Hence Artic Monkeys ‘Now then mardy bum’.

LST · 01/09/2021 17:09

Midlands here. But cob on is more common

LST · 01/09/2021 17:10

Or mard-arse. I use that a lot

NeverSurrender · 01/09/2021 17:11

Lincolnshire we use it frequently "DD is being mardy" also the equally often used "DD has got a cob on"

TeaAndStrumpets · 01/09/2021 17:12

Lincolnshire.

NapoleonOzmolysis · 01/09/2021 17:12

My mother was from Stafford and used it all the time.

HeronLanyon · 01/09/2021 17:13

I’ve always felt ‘cob on’ is a bit more understandable than ‘mardy’ which was usually without much reason ?

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 01/09/2021 17:13

Lancashire - my family use it but not often, more likely to use "being a mard arse"

Geamhradh · 01/09/2021 17:17

Nottinghamshire.

LargeBouquet · 01/09/2021 17:17

I always think that sounds like it means ‘has an erection.’
Pimpernella · 01/09/2021 17:18

For me - mardy is more sulky than grumpy.

MadMadMadamMim · 01/09/2021 17:18

Lincolnshire. Really common expression.

HeronLanyon · 01/09/2021 17:19

large well now I do too !

HappyGirl86 · 01/09/2021 17:21

I'm in Cheshire but near to Staffordshire and Lancashire and we use it
We also say someone is in "a mard"

Geamhradh · 01/09/2021 17:22

@Pimpernella

For me - mardy is more sulky than grumpy.
Also for me. The kind of kid who whinges constantly, cries at everything. That's mardy. A cob on is like a chin on. Arsey. Grin
TheQueef · 01/09/2021 17:23

Cob on = Lob on to my ears.

SunShinesBrightly · 01/09/2021 17:23

West Midlands and Manchester

PuppyMonkey · 01/09/2021 17:25

Yep as PP say, used is Nottingham/Derby. It's more like 'mard-eh' round here though. Alternatively, you can say "yer gorra rart mard on today, yo 'ave." Grin

Jumprope309 · 01/09/2021 17:25

Lancashire (Clitheroe/Blackburn) - we’d say ‘don’t be so mard’, but didn’t really use mardy
