  • Darjeeling or good quality regular tea. Milk, no sugar.
  • Cucumber and egg mayonnaise finger sandwiches.
  • A plain scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Prosecco
A cheese scone (warm) with salted butter
A savoury tart
A sweet scone, with jam then cream
A small slice of cake (lemon or carrot)

Jambons sound a bit like a croque monsieur, or a feuilletée au jambon-fromage, if made with flaky pastry.
Love it but it's indigestion on a plate for me.

@Joystir59

Good coffee served with cream and Demerara sugar. Hummus and tomato on sour dough, coffee and walnut cake.
Do you reckon you could detect the demerara sugar in a blind taste test? Not being antagonistic- just genuinely curious if it’s possible as I reckon my tastebuds could only distinguish between coffee no sugar, coffee sugar, coffee lots of sugar!! I wouldn’t have a clue which kind of sugar.
Morningstar66 · 01/09/2021 18:28

Plain scone with cream and apricot jam, bacon bee and Chutney sarnies. Mini tart au citron, brownies. Builders tea. Twice.

Incywinceyspider · 01/09/2021 18:36

You're coming to mine? You'll get what you're given!! Grin

YogaLite · 01/09/2021 18:37

Earl grey and Welsh cakes Smile

mbosnz · 01/09/2021 18:45

Kiwi club sandwich (ham, egg and mayo, tomato and lettuce), asparagus roll, salmon, cream cheese and capers sandwiches - on very thin bread, in dainty triangles and squares.

Little sausage roll, and blini with rare roast beef and horse radish.

Light as air scone, with strawberry jam and vanilla whipped cream. Victoria sponge with jam, cream and strawberries, and a brandy snap.

With a glass or two of veuve. . .

purplecorkheart · 01/09/2021 19:03

Barrys Tea

Could I have an entirely savoury afternoon tea?

A selection of sandwiches but no raw cheese.

A savoury mini tart.

A cheese and bacon scone

Maybe a bit of melon wrapped in parma ham.

ElspethFlashman · 01/09/2021 19:05

So I've actually googled Jambons and apparently nobody knows who invented them, but Irish people ate 20 MILLION of them last year.

They're not only a deli counter staple but you can buy boxes of them in the chilled section in Tesco and Aldi.

Greggs are really missing a trick here.

The good news is that you can make them yourself, just Google it!

Marmite27 · 01/09/2021 19:34

I do so love tea in a teacup!

Definitely. I don't even take sugar (I'm a black coffee, no sugar person), but the flavour of demarara is completely different to bog standard white cane - it's got a slightly bitter, rich and (logically enough) a treacle/molasses taste that makes it more complex compared to pure, toothaching sweetness. It's nearly as noticeable a difference as that between Saxa and Sea Salt flakes.

I like the champagne addition. I know the fancy hotels like Claridges and the Ritz used to charge a fair whack for afternoon tea with champagne. I'll be much more reasonable, provided you'll make do with Appletiser!

Greggs do a version of those jambon things don't they?

I'm on a diet so I'll just have champagne please, lots of it 😀

Well, this is very nice! 🥂🍾 🥂

I’ll have a cup of Twinings No 4 please.
Smoked salmon sandwiches
Cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches

Something warm & savoury, perhaps a delicate chicken vol au vent or a hearty slice of Welsh rarebit, or best of all Gentleman’s Relish on toast.

Fruit cake or coffee & walnut cake would be lovely.

WildRosie · 01/09/2021 21:07

Some chocolate flapjacks and big toffee choux buns would be rather good too. Equally suited to elevenses as afternoon tea.
